Good morning GH. As Mary likes to say in her kitchen, this blog will be down and dirty. The sun rose this morning at 7:55 a.m. and will set later today at 5:11 p.m.  There is s 10% chance of rain today, but the forecast calls for a serious chance of precipitation both tomorrow and Wednesday.. Today's high is expected to be 42°, but right now we are at freezing.

Yesterday, I spent a good portion of my time watching the oven bake. Yes, that's a lot like watching paint dry, I know, but sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. I baked the pumpkin for STWD after our morning walk and then worked on my jigsaw puzzle.

Our morning walk was abbreviated due to Sugar's acute hearing. We made it to Central Park where Sugar heard the sound of far off hunters and their guns, and she was off tot he races towards home. We stopped long enough for her to do her duty, and then we made it back in record time. That allowed me to make that pumpkins, roast some breadcrumbs for the dressing I made later, with a bit of assistance from a harried Mary who had been hard at work. She worked until about 9:00 p.m. on the index from...Well, you get the idea. This all happened after I had time to chop the veggies that were part of the aforementioned dressing.

More of my jigsaw puzzle is coming together, but I am still unable to complete the edges, which I like to do. Somewhere in there, I read some of my latest novel too.

I didn't watch much TV, and only watched enough sports to learn that the Denver Broncos defeated the New England Patriots, 30 - 24. Maybe that proves that the QB who is the backup for Peyton Manning in Denver is really as good as his win over the Bears proved he was. Maybe he is not a fluke. Time will tell.

Today, not much on tap. A morning walk with the intrepid weather dog, no more leftovers as they are now all gone, and more highlighting. Mary will be hard at work as soon as she rises and I will be on my own for much of the day. That's OK, I can handle it. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:00 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature of 22° will give way to an overnight low of 21°. Once the sun rises in the sky at 7:54 a.m., we are expecting today's high to reach all the way to 42°.

I was happily ensconced in front of the TV at noon to watch the Wolverines get thoroughly outplayed by the Buckeyes, 13 - 42. The Wolverines were never in he game once the Buckeyes were the recipients of a questionable roughing the kicker penalty from the officials. The Buckeyes marched down the field and then continued to score, seemingly at will, nearly every time they touched the ball. The Michigan defense had no clue how to stop them.

The Spartans fared much better in their game, seemingly scoring at will over the Penn State Nittany Lions, 55 - 16. Connor Cook, their regular starting QB was back under center, and looked great. Jake Ruddock, starting QB for the Wolverines was knocked out of the game when he was slammed to the ground, with a bone crunching tackle by the Buckeyes. No word yet on the severity of his injury. I prepared some snacks for my Game-o-Rama. I ate and worked on my puzzle.

Slow progress, but progress, none the less.
Our leftovers came back to visit again yesterday. I like them, and Mary is still being creative, but even she decided it was time to go to the favorite watering hole for dinner. That was after she and I visited the Muskegon Museum of Art to see the Christmas trees on display. We were too late to see the Hackley and Hume homes, but they will be open to visitors the day after Christmas. Naturally, I took some pictures of the museum exhibits and the trees, which are being auctioned off to raise money for the museum. I've included some, but not all, in no particular order.

Today, I have no particular plans as Mary gets back to her work and I try to figure out how to use the photos that are on my computer, but which I have no real idea how to access for my blogs and other uses.

The sun will set at 5:11 p.m. later today. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:30 a.m. in The City", where the current temperature is 31° as we fall slowly towards the overnight/early morning low of 25°. Later today, we'll rebound to 40° under partly cloudy skies. Sunday promises to be a sunny day with a high temperature of 45°.

I'd like to get Mary to join me for a final chance this year to tour the Muskegon Museum of Art for their annual Festival of Trees that runs until Sunday. The actual festival runs from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. I've wanted to see this exhibit for all of the years we have lived in West Michigan. If we miss it, it's gone for another year.

I also understand that there is a guided tour of the Hackley and Hume historic homes between 1:00 p.m. & 4:00 p.m. http://www.lakeshoremuseum.org/project/hackley-hume/ Sunday afternoon, Both of these homes were painstakingly restored to their 1890s appearance and feature decorations for Christmas. A lot depends on the progress that Mary makes on her current indexing projects, which seem to be piling up of late. Here's hoping.

Speaking of Mary, I've taken the liberty of including some photos below of her Thanksgiving Day dinner preparations from this past Thursday. Her blog shows the glamorous side of the dinner. We always laugh that when we were first married, when Mary made macaroni and cheese, generally a simple dish in those days, she seemed to use every dish and utensil in the kitchen. I think this year she may have actually done it with her dinner preparations. However, it was worth the mess, as the dinner itself was delicious. In fact, like with so many Thanksgiving dinners, the leftovers are still with us and may be for several more days.

So far, Mary has been creative in her leftover usage. Yesterday's lunch was toasted "ham" and cheese sandwiches, and dinner was more gravy, dressing, biscuits, "ham" and for me, the jellied cranberry sauce returned to the table. Mary doesn't eat the cranberry sauce, so more for me. Yes!

Later today, the Michigan Wolverines face the Ohio State Buckeyes at 12:00 p.m. The Buckeyes are still stinging from their loss last week to the Spartans of MSU, so they will be a tough opponent for Jim Harbaugh's Wolverines. The Spartan take on the team that Michigan beat last week, the Penn State Nittany Lions, at 3:30 p.m. Looks like a full day of college football for me. I'll have plenty of snack food available while Mary works. I'm betting that my loyal sous dog will be there too.

Speaking of the intrepid one, she and I had a nice walk to the newspaper box on a brisk but pleasant morning in GH. I followed the advice of the canine psychologist and let Sugar sniff as much as she wanted both going and coming. It took extra time, but I wasn't in a hurry. My indoor chores were going to get done later than sooner, that's all.

Mary walked to Health Hutt while Sugar and I were out,and then later Mary and I walked to the downtown and then to the Post to see Sally.

I did get in some time with Blue, my Ovation six string guitar, when I first arose yesterday. I like to think that play time with the girls keeps me young. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. While I'm watching football later today after the morning safari, I'll try to bake some pumpkin for Sugar's breakfast pleasure. I have two non-pie pumpkins that I have to either throw away or bake for Sugar's breakfasts. I am just not that big of a fan of cleaning out the seeds anymore, but it really isn't that hard to do.

Otherwise, not much will be happening here at the PE. Football, snack foods, more leftovers, and more snacking. Hmmm, I love it when a plan comes together.

The sun will rise at 7:52 a.m. and set at 5:12 p.m. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It has just passed 12:30 a.m. in "The City."

I just finished watching the Bears defeat the Packers, 17 - 13 at Lambeau Field. Amazing. Unfortunately, the Bears are now 1 - 3 in the division that they share with the Packers, and 5 - 6 overall. Earlier in the day, the Lions handily defeated the Eagles, 45 - 14, with Matthew Stafford throwing five touchdown passes. That's three in a row for the Lions, but they are only sporting four wins. Naturally, I watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from New York City. You can't do Thanksgiving without that parade.

The weather today was rainy, and only a short break in the rain allowed Mary and I to take the morning safari with STWD down to the waterfront. On a holiday morning in GH, the streets were deserted.

We returned home, and it was time for me to get out of the way and let Mary get to  work on our Thanksgiving dinner. She wants me to review her efforts, and so I will. I'll start with the main course, her interpretation of a vegan ham. It was great. Nicely spiced, and very tasty. However, neither of us realized that the recipe which called for the two piece vegan ham to spend five hours in the slow cooker would result in two ginormous "hams." We had more than enough and leftovers will be on the menu for many more meals. In addition, prior to the meal and after we each had a piece of my latest apple pie, Mary made snack foods that included celery, carrots, olives, home grown scallions, store bought pickles, vegan cheeses, and crackers. An incredible feast prior to the main meal.

She also crafted delicious scalloped potatoes using a recipe from a vegan cookbook. Along with the meal, she baked biscuits, and made mushroom gravy to go on those biscuits and the dressing that she made. Once again, a copious amount of leftovers resulted. The only store bought item on in the main meal was the jellied cranberry sauce that I can't live without. As with most Thanksgiving dinners, too much food and too little activity led to sleepiness. But overall, I pronounce all the foods a keeper, as they were all delicious. For further information and pictures of her activities and the results of her efforts in the kitchen yesterday, I urge you to take a look at Mary's blog, http://marygoeswalking.blogspot.com/

We decided that we have a lot to be thankful for this and every year. I am thankful that Mary chose to spend her life with me. I love her more than I ever express. I am thankful for Adam and Stephany, two young people who make our lives richer by the very act of their being. I am thankful for Sugar the Weather/Sous Dog who always brings a smile to may face and joy to my life. I am also thankful for being able to do most things on a daily basis, like walking, doing yard work on the PE, playing with the girls, and the chance to live in a small city with great people, and a great library.

I'm still working on the jigsaw puzzle, striving to complete the edge/border. I guess that I haven't found all the pieces, I guess, because I haven't made all the connections.

Speaking of the library, I finished my latest novel last night. It was the large print edition and it was so easy to read. I'll be returning that book to the library either today or Saturday on the morning walk with the intrepid weather dog. Saturday if the rain is too heavy tomorrow.

Today, some indoor chores, more reading, a possible morning walk with Sugar, and some time with that jigsaw puzzle. I'd also like to get in some time with the girls too. MAry has to get back to work, I think.

The sun will rise at 7:51 a.m. and set at 5:12 p.m. Rain is expected with a high temperature of 54° after a low later this morning of 26°. Brrrr. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:30 a.m. in "The City"

I got it all done yesterday. By all, I mean my outdoor chores. With a bit of assistance from Mary, I was able to move all of the front porch furniture into the man-cave. Then, I finished off the outdoor chores by piling up all of the remaining furniture and miscellany located on the back deck and on the vast acreage of the PE on the concrete patio at the back of the PE or on the deck. I then covered those items with two tarps. shown below. I also bagged up the last of the leaves, not shown.

The covered pile in depths of the PE.

The deck.
Then it was time for lunch and my next activity, baking an apple pie for Thanksgiving, shown below.

I haven't taste tested it yet, but the aroma is very enticing.
Finally, it was time for recreation and reading. Mary spent way too much of her time in the afternoon trying to resolve a problem with the current index. Between she and our IT guru, they have created a work around, but by the time they were done, the afternoon had gotten away from her, much like my day often does.

Since I had installed Mary's new clock in the living room the day before, near where the previous clock had hung, we decided that the previous clock should go to Sally. She likes having clocks in her house, and I believe she has in excess of 30 of various types. That necessitated a trip to the Post to see Sally and then out to dinner at JWs. A vegetarian burrito and some adult beverages and it was time to get home to STWD.

Speaking of the intrepid one, she helped me make the pie earlier in the afternoon in her role as sous dog. Our morning walk was uneventful on a perfect day for a safari.

I was wrong, no trains yesterday. I guess the railroad gave their personnel time off for the Thanksgiving holiday until at least Friday.

Today, football, snacking, playing with the girls, reading, and dinner, not in any particular order. Mary will be indexing part of the time and then working on her dinner recipes. Since I got my outdoor chores done yesterday, I have no specific plans. I may do a few indoor chores, but I don't have to. I believe that there are parades on TV, so I may watch part of those.

That looks like enough for yesterday and today. The sun will rise at 7:50 a.m. and set at 5:13 p.m. Rain is still part of the forecast for today and tomorrow. Ciao.

Wednesday, November 25, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City." Strangely enough, I'm listening to the inspiration for that opening, George Noory, on Coast to Coast AM. What a strange show it has been, but that's what you mostly get at 4:00 a.m.

The current temperature outside the WW is 35°, the bottom of the slide for this early morning. We'll go up the down escalator later today to reach the high of 51°, perfect for my outdoor chores. Mary suggested that I could wait, but the weather will not be getting any better. Rain, as much as one-half inch according to our other favorite weatherman, Bill Steffen at WOOD TV. Rain and possible T-storms and a high of 43° on Friday, with similar temperatures for the foreseeable future too. So the pie I will be making for T-Giving will have to wait until later in the day.

I had enough of shopping yesterday. A trip to the big-box home center was so filled with those people that Mary doesn't suffer well, fools. Like she has been known to say, "Make a decision, it doesn't matter what, just make it", or words to that effect. People who resemble the cast of Night of the Living Dead. Lines at the checkout that never move. Cashiers that seem to find nothing wrong with calling out for change as the line grinds to an even slower pace if that's possible. Lines that open up after you have been standing there and you have to watch as new arrivals jump into those new lines. Managers who seemingly don't care that you are there. But, you don't want to give up and leave your potential purchases, because you have waited so long already. Arrrgh!

Ah, but then you get to leave, and you do so as expeditiously as possible. You end your trip with a stop in the downtown business district of GH and make purchases that seem to be appreciated, from merchants who seem to care that you are alive. Better, much better.

No trains yesterday, but that means that we should see two today.

In sports news, the NIU Huskies fell to the Ohio Bobcats, 21 - 26, missing a chance to clinch their sixth straight MAC West division title. By the time the game was over, both teams were using their third string QBs due to injuries to the starters and their backups.

After the morning safari with STWD, I'll be doing those outdoor chores, more reading, and baking that apple pie with the able assistance of STSD. I need to enlist Mary's aid for about 15 minutes to help me get the furniture from the front porch to the outer doors of the man-cave. After that I can handle things. I could do it all myself, but the time would extend greatly.

Otherwise, not much on tap. The sun will rise at 7:49 a.m. and set at 5:13 p.m. Ciao.

Tuesday, November 24, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City", where a current temperature of 33° precedes today's high of 42°. However, as previously described, the best day, both temperature and precipitation wise, for outdoor chores will be Wednesday. No rain and a high  temperature of 51° looks like a great late fall day. So as also previously described, that's the day for those outdoor chores. T-giving will be similar in temperature, but the forecast calls for rain.

That should be a great day for me to read, play with the girls, and stay mostly out of Mary's way in the kitchen as she prepares our sumptuous holiday repast. I have to be careful to not snack too much before the dinner she has planned. I will have to assist some, I'm sure, but that's okay.

After our extended, but carefully planned trip to the big-box everything store for supplies, we are on track for Mary to do the voodoo that she do so well.

We did get the first incarnation of the latest index off to the publisher for additional input and comment yesterday afternoon. However, two others await. For the next one, my highlighting is nearly complete. I believe that there is yet another job, but I have nothing to do with that one other than editing.

Today I plan to take that trip to the big-box home center that we didn't take time to accomplish yesterday. By the time we were done with the grocery trip it was late, so we eschewed that trip in favor of a walk to our favorite watering hole for dinner after unloading the grocery getter. It was a great evening for walking in GH both going and coming. No wind to speak of, and comfortable temperatures.

Mary will continue to slog through her next index while I am out. All of that takes place after the morning safari with STWD.

Speaking of the morning safari, STWD and I had to detour around the Community Center, local home to a community college, and our library where I had intended to return a book. Apparently, a note was found in a restroom at another location of that college regarding a problem that necessitated Public Safety closing the streets and the buildings that occupied the entire block on which the Community Center/college is sited. The all clear came about 11:00 a.m., but by then, Sugar and I had detoured and I had carried my library return to and from the newspaper box. I guess I'll try again today.

I only witnessed the southbound run of the train yesterday at 11:19 a.m. We must have been at the big -box everything store when the northbound run passed through. Heading south were the familiar locomotives, #2057 and #2019, towing three BCs, and seven CHCs, all seemingly empty as evidenced by their swaying motion.

So I've summed up yesterday's excitement, described today's activities and given a nice summary of the weather. Today the sun will rise at 7:48 a.m. and set at 5:14 p.m. Ciao.

Monday, November 23, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 5:00 a.m. in "The City." Our current view outside the WW is a snowy vista with a temperature of 29°, which is the forecast overnight low. Today's high is forecast to be 38°. That snow is part of a forecast delivered by our favorite weatherman, Kyle Underwood, of WOOD TV and radio, and directly observed by our own personal observation.. Given that the temperatures on Wednesday forecast to be 49° under mostly sunny skies, those outdoor chores I had planned for Tuesday, will likely wait until Wednesday. The snow should be melted and that will make the chores more easily accomplished.

Yesterday, I finished a novel, highlighted, and walked with STWD. In addition, I got the privilege of washing the dishes from the day before, a fair division of duties since I enjoyed the meals from the night before.

We did make it to the matinee performance of Jekyll and Hyde, the musical, that was performed by a cast of actors and musicians at Grand Haven High School yesterday. We had not been to GHHS nor the Performing Arts Center there previously, and to say that the facility was outstanding would not do it justice. Wow!, best sums it up.

That same accolade applies to the performance itself. Mary and I have seen performances by professional casts at many levels that were not as good. The actors, especially the young man who played the parts of Jekyll and Hyde, and the young women who played the parts of Jekyll's fiancee and his other lady friend were superb. The musicians in the orchestra, and the crew for scenery and other activities were also terrific. Once again, WOW!

One final word on the actor who portrayed Jekyll and Hyde. His ability to switch back and forth between characters for the final scene was nothing short of fabulous. According to a recent story in our local newspaper, The Grand Haven Tribune, the young man who played those parts began his
training for the role last spring. It showed. This final matinee performance was not the last, as the cast and crew will be taking this show to the Michigan Thespian Festival at Saginaw Valley State University on Dec. 4.

I'll be taking the morning walk with the intrepid weather dog while wearing my winter boots, as the snow will be melting and that will cause slippery conditions on both streets and sidewalks. Mary will be hard at work finishing the current index as I walk and then I'll have it on my desk for editing before our final collective edit prior to submission.

Later today, we'll be shopping for our Thanksgiving repast supplies, as well as traveling to the big box home center for a few things that I want.

That looks like enough for one day. The sun will rise at 7:46 a.m. and set at 5:14 P.M. Ciao.

Sunday, November 22, 2015

Good morning GH. It is just past 11:00 a.m. in "The City."

The weather outside the WW is cold and there is snow on the ground. The current temperature is 30° as strive to reach today's high of 32°. Tomorrow, more snow is expected, starting overnight tonight and accumulating one to three inches. Fortunately, the temperature will rise to 40° tomorrow, so it should melt away. My original plan to finish my outdoor chores was to wait until Tuesday, so I'm still on track. Nuff said.

The sports report from yesterday was fantastic, at least for fans of Michigan college football. The Wolverines of Michigan defeated the Nittany Lions of Penn State, 28 - 16. Next up for the Wolverines, the Ohio State Buckeyes who were defeated by the MSU Spartans 17 - 14 on a last second field goal. The Spartans next play the Penn State Nittany Lions. The NIU Huskies play Tuesday night against the Ohio Bobcats. The Bears play the Broncos later today. The Lions also play later today against the Raiders. Is it possible that the Bears and the Lions may win two in a row? Stay tuned,

Today, I took the morning walk with STWD and then returned to do some indoor chores and some reading, Mary and I are going to the high school to see a matinee performance of Jekyll and Hyde, the musical. After that, no plans.

The sun rose at 7:45 a.m. and will set at 5:15 p.m., as we move inexorably toward the shortest day of the year in December, the winter solstice. Ciao.

Saturday, November 21, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just passing 12:30 a.m. in "The City." The snow that we are forecast to get has yet to begin. However the current temperature outside the WW is 37° as we fall to the overnight low of 26° before we slowly reach today's high of 37°. If it was me, I'd just skip the in between temperatures. Just saying.

I worked hard yesterday after the morning safari with STWD. We took a circuitous route as Mary stopped in at the Health Hutt. Along the way, Sugar and I met Sugar's favorite newspaper delivery person with Sugar's favorite things, dog biscuits. I think Sugar was ready to go home with the lady and wait on a steady supply of biscuits. To paraphrase that old T-shirt saying, "We took the morning walk and all I got was a newspaper."

We returned home and I got to read the newspaper and then do the crossword. It was a hard one that required heavy thinking. The intrepid weather dog kept me company as I read and worked. I then repaired to my office and highlighted about one-half of the latest book by the time I was done.

Along the way, we ate lunch made by Mary the night before. A superb pasta salad that included tuna substitute, scallions, ranch dressing, and spiral pasta. I liked it when it was served on top of a bed of iceberg lettuce.

After lunch, STSD and I baked a loaf of my famous banana nut bread. Sugar provided the assistance I needed to clean out the mixing bowls before they went into the dishwasher. I think this is my best bread to date. Why? I don't know, but it is moist and very tasty.

Somewhere in all of the excitement, the trains rumbled through. The southbound run happened at 10:41 a.m., with EMD GP 38 locomotives 2057 and 2019 towing five CHCs, one DWTC and four DBTCs, with one DBTC bringing up the rear. At 1:25 p.m., the same locomotive rolled past. Just the locomotives with no cars in tow.

I did accomplish more on my jigsaw puzzle, read the start of a new novel, and as noted, highlighted more of the newest indexing project. All in all, a good day.

Mary was multi-tasking. She was working on an index, chatting, and emailing back and forth with various people.

Later we were off the the favorite watering hole for dinner and adult libations. We drove, but I forgot to remind Mary that it was "Light Night" in GH. Parking was tight and the town was crowded with the intended visitors that the night is intended to attract. We found a parking place, found two stools, and the rest is history.

Today, the Irish Jam is a game time decision for yours truly. It all depends on how much snow has fallen during the night and the hours before 1:00 p.m. Since I walk, I don't want to slip on the sidewalks. In any event, I'll be home in time to watch MSU play OSU, Spartans versus Buckeyes. By the time that game is completed, I'll have learned whether the Wolverine of Michigan were winners or losers over the Nittany Lions of Penn State.

I have to be sure to get more highlighting done too, although I am well ahead of Mary's needs at this time. The book is very interesting and I have made many comments in-the margins.

Speaking of sidewalks, the concrete goddess smiled upon us and the workers replaced the missing slabs of concrete at the end of the block. Just in time for the snowfall.

The sun will rise at 7:44 a.m. and set before the rise of a waxing gibbous moon at 5:16 p.m. Ciao.

Friday, November 20, 2015

Good morning GH. It is just passing 7:30 a.m. in "The City." Sometimes a warm bed and a warmer wife are more appealing than getting out of bed and going to a cold office can be very appealing. So that's why I'm here now rather than earlier.

Train spotting should resume today, early, and then nothing until Monday.

The sun will be rising at 7:43 a.m., less than 10 minutes from now. Much like yesterday, it will be a windy day, so the morning safari will be short. No snow in the forecast until tomorrow. Even then, the forecast calls for our GH luck to keep accumulations down to less than one inch. Today's high, 41°. Tomorrow, 37°. It looks like winter will make a short visit, as temperatures warm to the mid 40° by T-giving.

Mary went to a meditation class at the library last night. I stayed home and finished the novel I was reading. Overall, I'd give it four out of five stars, as the author finished the story with a whimper rather than a bang. I think he was doing his usual "buy my next book" ending to see where this goes.

Today, I should get more of those outdoor chores done, but with the windy conditions, I may put them off for just before T-giving. Plus, I have another book to highlight for my boss. The pay is low, but I learn a lot.

Sports tomorrow will see the MSU Spartans @ Ohio State at 3:30 p.m. The Wolverines of Michigan will be @ Penn State to visit the Nittany Lions at 12:00 p.m. The Bears host the Denver Broncos at 1:00 p.m. EST on Sunday. With Peyton Manning out with a foot injury, the Bears will once again face a backup QB who will either be an easy sack, or the next coming of a QB who will be a one game flash in the pan. The Bear's next game will come T-giving night against the Packers at 8:30 p.m. EST.

That looks like enough for today. The sun will set at 5:16 p.m. on a busy day for me and Mary. She'll be indexing, chatting, and making meals for meditative purposes, while I am reading and highlighting. Hmmm, I like my prospects more. I may sneak in a few moments with the girls and at the puzzle table after the morning safari with STWD. Mary took the morning walk with me and the intrepid one yesterday as I journeyed to the doctor. They turned back for home due to the cold and windy conditions. Ciao.

Thursday, November 19, 2015

Good morning pr good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:45 a.m. in "The City." The weather yesterday was windy and rainy, but comfortable for walking. Right now, the temperature is  51° with an expected low temperature of 32°.  We are heading for today's high of 45°. Quite a comedown from yesterday's high of 61°. The NWS is forecasting several inches of snow for Saturday, just in tie for me to walk to my Irish Jam session.

Still no sign of the concrete to replace the sidewalk that was recently removed for underground pipe repairs.

Trainspotting yesterday was, spotty. At 9:37 a.m. the southbound run of locomotives 2019 and 2057 rumbled through towing 17 CHCs, five DBTCs, and three GTCs. At 12:23 p.m., the same locomotives rolled through heading north. In tow were eight CHCs, many rusty and old looking, two DBTCs, and a lone DWTC that was bringing up the rear.

I managed to keep STWD out of Mary's hair while she was on her webinar, so I guess that I did my job. I also got the bags of leaves out to the curb, so another job was completed.

As noted, it was very windy when the intrepid weather dog and I took the morning walk. Along the way, we encountered Sugar's favorite newspaper delivery lady, both on the outbound and the inbound legs of our journey. On both, this nice lady provided biscuits for Sugar. Naturally, Sugar adores her and believe me, Sugar is very careful about whom she likes. A good biscuit can often, but not always, ease the meet and greet. Sugar is still working on our letter carrier, Dave. She likes him when she sees him, but she's not sure, and then she sees him on the street again and wants to greet him, but then she's not sure. Well, you get the idea.

In sports news, as predicted here, Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta won the N.L. Cy Young award, which goes to the best pitcher in the league. That means the the Cubs won the baseball Tri-fecta. I don't know who the MVP award winner will be in the N.L this year. As a long suffering Cubs fan, I'm hoping that next season Arrieta gets some competition from Jon Lester for the Cy Young award next season. Somewhere, the old third baseman, Ron Santo is probably wishing that the Cubs make it to the World Series next season. Me too. The NIU Huskies defeated the Bulls of Buffalo, 41 - 30. The basketball Bulls defeated the Phoenix Suns, 103 - 97, to go to 8 - 3 on the young season. Sadly, D' Rose sat out with a sprained ankle.

Today, I plan to continue reading my novel. It is holding my interest. This is the latest offering from Dale Brown entitled Iron Wolf. I also have some western based stories on hold on my bookshelf, along with The Astonishing Life of Ota Benga by Pamela Newkirk. This is the sad story of a young man captured in Africa and exhibited like an animal in a zoo. Awaiting pickup at the library is Scents and Sensibilities by Spencer Quinn. This is pure pulp fiction about a dog named Chet and his human, Bernie Little, proprietor of the Little Detective Agency.

Otherwise, some time with the girls, some puzzle solving and that's about it after the morning walk. I will also be traveling to the doctor's office for a routine checkup.

The sun will rise at 7:42 a.m. and set at 5:17 p.m. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, It is just past 6:30 a.m. in "The City." I decided that sometimes discretion is better than getting up at 2:00 a.m. or 3:00 a..m, so I didn't. We have a current temperature of 43° as we wend our way towards today's high of 62° However, this will be a mostly rainy day that allows me to take the morning safari with STWD between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. with the winds blowing us up and down the streets.

I wish that the city would insist that the people who tore up the sidewalk at the corner had to fix it more expediently. With the rain today and the falling temperatures expected by the end of the week, it will now be more problematical. Plus, with the closure of the sidewalks near the public safety building, it is very difficult to get downtown. I know that most people pay scant attention to the walkers in town, but for Mary and myself, the sidewalks are a must have.

I did get those additional outdoor chores done yesterday. I am down to just a few that need to get done before the snow flies. I should be okay, but there are predictions of snow for later this week, south of GH. Sigh. Mary is extra busy, so I'll have to do the chores by myself which takes me, not surprisingly, twice as long. Since there is a prediction for one to three inches of snow on Saturday and gusty winds tomorrow, I'll have to fit those additional chores in on Friday.

I did get in some time with the girls yesterday, so that was all good. I also got more of my novel read and additional pieces placed around the edges of my jigsaw puzzle, also good.

Today after the morning safari with the intrepid weather dog, I'll do some additional reading, puzzle solving, and probably leave out the play with the girls since I need to rest my thumb joint. I have an Irish Jam session on Saturday afternoon, so I want to be well rested.

Since Mary has a webinar today that I/we don't want to disturb, I'll keep Sugar quiet and out of Mary's hair downstairs while in my Lay-Z-Boy. It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

No trainspotting yesterday, so there will likely be trains today.

Cubs manager, Joe Maddon, earned the Manager of the Year award in the N.L. yesterday in his first year with the team. This is his third Manager of the Year award. Previously he won two with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 and 2011. Now we await the possibility of a baseball trifecta if pitcher Jake Arrieta wins the N.L. Cy Young Award.

The sun will rise on that previously mentioned rainy/windy day at 7:40 a.m. and set before the rains taper off at 5:18 p.m. With luck, I should be able to get the bags of leaves out to the curb later this evening. I'll just have to be careful since they are on the porch. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:30 a.m. in "The City."

Yesterday was even better than the day before. The sun was shining, and we reached a high temperature in the mid 60s. Today will be very similar, until the rains begin to fall in the late afternoon. Those rains are expected to continue into Wednesday. That's okay, as I finished many of my outdoor chores yesterday. I have more to do to get ready for winter, but I'll get to them as time allows.

I did spend some time at the laundromat yesterday getting the comforter washed and dried. I spent the time reading my book, so the time was productive if not exciting. While I was out, Mary washed, dried and replaced the other bedding articles. I think I got the better end of the deal.

STWD and I took the morning safari solo as Mary was busy on a work related project. Later she had to take part in preparations for a Webinar that she will actually be participating in on Wednesday. I have to be sure to ask her how to delete an entry from a new index I created earlier this morning. Our IT guru showed me the other day, but I forgot. Mary didn't finish her Webinar preparations until after 6:00 p.m. so we went out to dinner at the favorite watering hole.

I witnessed the southbound passage of locomotives 2057 and 2019 at 10:02 a.m. as they sped through "The City" at a higher than usual speed. They were towing a lone BC, eight CHCs, one GTC, along with three DBTCs bringing up the rear. We were out when the northbound run occurred, so I have nothing to report about that passage. We had traveled to Muskegon for some shopping before Mary's prep session.

In sports news, the Cubs Kris Bryant was named N.L. Rookie of the Year yesterday. With his home-run and RBI totals, along with his overall play all over the field, it really was no surprise. The Cubs manager Joe Maddon is expected to be named Manager of the Year later. Plus, Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta, with his 22 - 6 record and his low ERA of 1.77, is likely to be named the N.L Cy Young Award winner. The Bulls eked out a win over the Pacers 96 - 95. The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Ottawa Senators 4 - 3 in OT.

Later today, I have plans to read more, play with the girls, and do some indoor chores after the morning walk with the intrepid weather dog to pick up the newspaper. If time allows, I have one additional outdoor chore that I'd like to complete.

Later today, the sun will rise at 7:39 a.m. with thickening cloud cover as the rains come and then set at 5:19 p.m. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:30 a.m. in "The City."

Yesterday was a great day in oh so many ways. It was so nice in the morning, and in fact all day, that Mary and I took the morning walk to the waterfront with STWD. We all had a great time. When we got home, Mary made a great lunch of her now famous Coleslaw and Sloppy Joes that were made from rice, refried beans, and her now famous barbecue sauce. That's the sauce that can make nearly anything taste better.

I spent the day in my chair reading, watching the Bears trounce the St. Louis Rams 37 - 13 and the Lions slip by the Packers 18 - 16 in Lambeau Field, for the Lions first win there since 1991.

I finished my highlighting chores last evening, so now it's up to Mary to do the voodoo that she do so well and finish the index. The book, as advertised, was very interesting. I also started my own novel that I have been trying to get to for about one week.

As previously mentioned, the skies were sunny, and the clouds just dots in a high blue sky. Today is expected to be similar, with a high of 60°. Tuesday, the forecast calls for rain showers and a high of 58°. Same for Wednesday. Right now the temperature outside the WW is 52° as we drop to the overnight low of 44°.

Just a few plans for later today. I want to get the bicycle hooks installed in the garage and the bicycles hung up for the winter. I may find time to ride my bike today too after the morning walk with the intrepid one. I also have to wash and dry the comforter from our bed, so that will require a trip to the local laundromat due to the size of the comforter. The whole operation will take about two hours, so I'll take my novel for entertainment.

Other than that, not much to do. The sun will rise at 7:38 a.m and set at 5:20 p.m. Ciao.

Sunday, November 15, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:00 a.m. in "The City."

What's there say? Another day, another seven bags of leaves. Of course that's better than my neighbors, Ron and Marilyn. Somehow a magic vortex formed that dumped leaves directly from Central Park located in the middle of "The City" to in front of and beside our house that required those aforementioned seven bags. However, that same magic vortex dumped 25 bags worth of leaves at the curb and on the lawn in front of Marlilyn and Ron's house and in the street. The balance of the leaves appear to have been dropped on the railroad tracks nearby, behind the public safety building, and everywhere else in town, except in Central Park. Go figure.

I did get in some time with the girls yesterday morning. It feels good to play some and sing and to.... Well, you get the idea.

We took the morning safari with STWD after Mary whipped up some rice and peas cold salad. The walk itself was uneventful. Sugar and I kept walking as Mary stopped at Health Hutt. When we returned, we had sandwiches and that salad for lunch.

While I was out raking the leaves, Mary journeyed to the community center for her annual purchase of a wreath for the front door of the PE. Later, we went downtown to see the sales at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. We didn't get anything there. We spent the balance of the afternoon walking to the favorite watering hole. It was a late afternoon junk food extravaganza. On the way home we stopped at the Post to see Sally.

At the favorite watering hole, we watched the Wolverines of Michigan as they struggled to defeat the Choosers of Indiana. Ultimately after two overtime periods, they won, 48 - 41. Definitely not a defensive gem for either team. While watching, we learned that the Spartans of MSU had defeated the Terrapins of Maryland, 24 - 7. The Bears play later today at 1:00 p.m. EST.

Today, I have no plans. I doubt that I'll get an urge to do any physical labor, that's for sure.

The current temperature is 53° as we head for the overnight low of 43°. Later today, we'll rebound to a very pleasant temperature of 57°. What a great day for walking and just being. The sun will rise at 7:36 a.m. and set at 5:21 p.m. giving way to a waxing crescent moon in a mostly clear sky. Ciao.

Saturday, November 14, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:00 a.m. in "The City."

Unfortunately, the NWS was right. The winds blew strongly throughout the day, depositing the leaves from Central Park in our driveway and front lawn. The old phrase, "Man plans, Goddess laughs", seems more appropriate than ever. In addition, we had sleet, snow, and rain all in the span of about two hours early yesterday. Today, things are forecast to calm down quite a bit. Less windy, warmer temperatures, and sunny skies. STWD will be happy about that. The abbreviated morning safari I predicted for yesterday came to pass.

Currently, we have a temperature of 40°, the expected overnight low, before we rise to today's high of 51°. That should be comfortable when I begin the process of creating more bags of leaves for the next pickup. I just hope that I can put the bags out this coming week, because the forecast for Wednesday into Thursday is for warmer temperatures, but possible rain/T-storms. I guess it will be another game time decision.

We got to the library, by car yesterday afternoon, due to the high winds and other weather conditions as previously described.

Mary crafted a superb lunch yesterday. Sloppy Joe's, and a new recipe for sandwich slaw that tasted great and was quickly devoured by yours truly. Dinner was bean tacos with all the trimmings. That came to pass after a stop at the Post to see Sally on the way home from the library.

I did get in some time with the girls yesterday, though not as much as I'd have liked. With a lot of help from out IT guru, my computer woes have been mostly eliminated. She had to call on additional IT help for her efforts, so I felt better about that. She was nearly stumped, but only nearly.

The morning train run of EMD GP 38 locomotives #s 2019 and 2057 happened at 9:43 a.m. In tow were two BCs, three CHCs, and nine DBTCs.

Those same locomotives reversed position for the northbound run at 1:25 p.m towing four CHCs, two DBTCs, and a lone DWTC was bringing up the rear. Worthy of note was the fact that I was on the phone with our IT guru while sitting at my desk with the window closed. She could hear the train rumbling past yesterday morning. She remarked that the tracks must be close by. Like I've often said, it is great living on a "Reality Scale" train layout.

As noted, my day today will mostly consist of that morning walk with the intrepid weather dog, some reading, and lots of leaf blowing/raking/bagging. Mary has to get started on her latest indexing project. I've begun my part by highlighting 64 pages so far. That's out of a total of 312 pages. However, these are smaller scale pages as compared to previous books. As described previously, the book is interesting.

The sun will rise at 7:35 a.m. and set at 5:22 p.m. Ciao.

Friday, November 13, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. I decided that I would get up long enough to create this abbreviated version of my regular blog here in "The City." The current temperature out side the WW is 45° as we fall to the overnight low of 33°, before we rise once again to today's high of 45°. It is 2:45 a.m.

STWD and I took anabbreviated morning walk in the prevailing winds. We headed east and then south long enough to allow Sugar to do her duty and them stopped in at the newspaper box nearby to pick up the paper as the rains began to fall anew. We made it home and that was the last time either of us wanted to be outdoors.

Before we went out, I did get in some time with the girls

Mary made a great lunch composed of sandwiches and steamed cauliflower.  I decided it was time to bake some spicy chickpeas and a pumpkin pie after lunch while Mary went upstairs to print out her latest project.

My pie turned out great, with a flaky crust and a spicy filling. I have some pictures to chronicle my efforts, along with a rare photo of the intrepid weather dog ans Sous chef.

The whole finished effort

My "test" piece.

The always handsome and camera shy STWD & STSD.

Dinner was spaghetti mixed with garlic, olive oil, and diced tomatoes. I liked it as I always do. I watched the evening news and worked some crosswords while Mary did some business upstairs. I relinquished the TV at 8:00 p.m. and went upstairs. I texted with Adam and then watched some car shows on the TV in the media room. Mary spent time in her kitchen crafting some preparations for today's repasts. I actually stayed up late enough to have Mary join me in watching some late night TV after her labors of love were done in her kitchen.

That's enough for one day. The sun will rise at 7:34 a.m. and set at 5:22 p.m. In between, the winds are supposed to subside and the rain is expected to continue. T-storms are a possibility too.

I have no particular plans for today. My efforts at using my new computer will be enhanced by a visit with our IT guru via the internet. I have that aforementioned highlighting to begin for Mary. As previously noted, the book looks interesting. STWD and I will once again brave the wind and rain to take an abbreviated morning safari. Mary plans to join us as we travel to the newspaper box so that she can stop at the library to pick up some books for both of us. Later she has a chat session. Ciao.

Thursday, November 12, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just passing 1:15 a.m. in "The City."

It looks like the NWS was right. Outside the WW, the rain is falling, the lightning is flashing and the thunder is crashing. In addition, the rain and windy conditions are expected to continue throughout today and into Friday. The high temperature will be in the lower fifties.

I didn't get the remaining vegetables harvested in the vast gardens of the PE, but that will wait until Saturday.

I did hear both train runs yesterday. The southbound run took place at 10:36 a.m., and the northbound run at 1:30 p.m. I didn't see either due to an inability to rise for the former and the fact that I was across town for the latter.

We walked with the intrepid weather dog to get her pawdicure in Center Town and also to pick up some additional treats at the City Farmer in East Town. While there, we also bought a new watering can that was made in the USA.

It looks like it was a good thing we got all of our errands taken care of yesterday afternoon.

We stopped in at the Post to see Sally on our way home from those errands. Then home, where we had a light supper and watched some TV. By 8:00 p.m. I was spent, so I toddled off to bed.

Today I plan to stay in and stay out of trouble. I'll play more with the girls, read yesterday's newspaper and more of my latest novel. We did get all of the ingredients for a pumpkin pie while we were out, so I may take time to bake one today. I've already baked the pumpkins for the filling, so it shouldn't require too much additional effort.

Mary has accepted another book for indexing, so my personal reading time may be limited for a few weeks. That's okay, because this book sounds interesting.

The sun will rise on that windy and rainy day at 7:33 a.m. and set at 5:23 p.m. Our current temperature is 40° before we reach today's high of 53°. Ciao.

Wednesday, November 11, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:00 a.m. in "The City."

A quick check out the WW tells/shows me what I already knew, it is cold and dark out there. Our current temperature is 32° which is the overnight low. Later today, after the sun rises at 7:31 a.m., we are supposed to see 59°. That same sun will set before the new moon takes over at 5:25 p.m. By Thursday, the temperatures will drop to a high of 52° with rain and possible T-storms.

We can expect to see trains again today on their every other day schedule.

Yesterday I found time to play with the girls for a while. STWD and I soloed on the morning walk due to Mary's chat schedule. The weather was perfect for walking and we enjoyed rustling through the leaves. Well Sugar did anyway.

When I got home I did some of the outdoor chores that I wanted to get done. That amounted to blowing and raking one bag of leaves. Then I came in and finished the indoor chores I had scheduled for myself. I was hungry by then and fortunately for me, Mary had planned ahead and made some faux tuna salad for a sandwich that I paired with some potato chips. She couldn't wait, so she had already prepared an alternate for herself. I think that was a good plan, as she had no way of knowing when I 'd be in from my chores.

We set out once again to visit the both the bank and Health Hutt before we stopped in at JWs. We also made a short visit to the local hobby purveyor to look at an R/C car that they had on display. It turned out to be a new version of an old car that wasn't highly prized by those in the know. Home once again, to await new episodes of NCIS and NCIS New Orleans. Mary wanted to listen to the GOP debate, but I was fine without.

Today, I plan to get some reading and some crosswords done. That will be enough for me. Mary also plans to go to the grocery store too. That means that I'll have to do can return duty. Somewhere in there, we'll take the morning safari and I hope to resolve my computer concerns if our IT guru is available.

The sun will set and so will I later in the evening. Ciao.

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just passing 2:30 a.m. in "The City."

We had a great day yesterday. While we didn't get up all that early, I found time to finish the book by President Carter and to work a crossword or two. Later in the day, since I was busy at the computer, Mary took STWD for the morning safari. I'm still not done with the computer, but our IT guru had to attend to another task before we could finish. Hopefully today.

Since we had spare time, Mary and I set out to visit some Ottawa County lake-shore parks located on the shores of the "Big Lake" near Holland. We didn't find the one we set out to see. However, we stopped in at another park nearby and took some pictures there. That park is appropriately named Tunnel Park. I couldn't include them all, so I selected a few. Since we both took pictures, I selected randomly from both cameras.

The approach to the tunnel from which the park got it's name.

Mary took this photo, and I like it.

I think this is her photo too. I think it is stunning.

Here's a rare shot, Mary letting me take her picture. She made me promise to not include the picture if it didn't look good, but I think she is more photogenic than she thinks she is.

I think that this one was mine.

Although there are many photos in Mary's Jack on Bench series from our many trips. This one shows me at my best.

A nice shot of the nearby residence on the dune above the beach at Tunnel Park. You can't beat the view.

A close up in the tunnel as we left the beach

Shhhhh! You can hear the surf from the "Big Lake."

This is the park tunnel as viewed from the beach..

We followed the roads home through Holland and then along the shore. We ended our "Field Trip" at the favorite watering hole. We arrived to a warm greeting from the intrepid weather dog and then settled in for some TV viewing. I journeyed up to the Media Room and there I watched the beginning of the Bears victory over the Chargers, 22 - 19.

Today looks like I'll get to those outdoor chores along with some indoor chores while Mary chats and does the kitchen duties that she is better at than yours truly. I like being outdoors and I believe it to be a fair split.

I only witnessed the southbound train run at 10:27 a.m. as locomotive #2057 towed nine CHCs. We were at the aforementioned park when the northbound run occurred sometime in the afternoon.

Otherwise, not much on tap. The skies will be sunny today as I work outside with a high temperature of 54°. We are currently at 36°. The sun will rise at 7:30 a.m. and set at 5:26 p.m. Ciao.

Monday, November 9, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It has just passed 4:45 a.m. in "The City."

Yesterday was a phenomenal day. We stayed in bed all morning... Not to just pass the time, but to do as little as possible. It worked. We didn't get the show on the road until after 12:00 p.m. After a light lunch, we were off with STWD for the morning safari.

When we got back, Mary walked over to the Book Man, our local independent bookstore, to order the cookbooks she wanted. Believe it or not, I finally got the felt on my puzzle table and got started on the puzzle. It only took me about three weeks, but I did it.

We had decided a few days ago to devote our afternoon and evening to some music.

At 4:00 p.m. we walked to the First Presbyterian Church of GH to listen to a very talented musician, Neil Jacobs, play his three 12 string guitars. He interspersed his music with explanations of the places to which he has traveled and to the songs learned or wrote there. My review can be summed up in just a few words. Awesome! Unbelievable! Wow!. He was that good and, even better.

At 6;00 p.m., we segued to the community center for another concert. This one featured Michael "Beans" Gardner and his local GH band. They were playing gratis in support of The Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti. Their website is: http://goodsamaritanofhaiti.com/. As Michael tells the story, he became affiliated with this charity due to his love of the Caribbean area when on an extended stay in Haiti.

Micheal grew up in GH and has traveled all over the world sailing and playing his music, a mix of rock, folk, and pirate music. We liked it. It is worthy of note that 90% of the monies donated to this charity are used to educate the young people of Haiti. So, if you are looking for a holiday gift in lieu of the usual things that are seemingly impossible to buy, look no further.

We have a current temperature outside the WW of 33°, which is also the overnight low. Later today, after the sun rises at 7:29 a.m., the high is expected to reach 54°. By Wednesday the NWS is predicting a high of 60°. After that, temperatures will fall into the 40° plus range. Tonight the sun will set at 5:27 p.m.

Today the regular morning walk with STWD and then I have some work to do in the gardens of the PE. Nothing much, but some things that need doing. I hope to get more time with the girls, read the Grand Haven Tribune, and perhaps some of yesterday's edition of the N. Y. Times. I also want to finish the book written by President Jimmy Carter. I may try my hand at baking a pumpkin pie too. That looks like a busy day to me. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:45 a.m. in "The City."

Well, the MSU Spartans lost a heart-breaker to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. 38 - 39. There are those who suggest that a controversial call by the officials was the cause, but the fact that neither defense was able to keep the score in the teens or twenties is a strong indicator of the problem. Earlier in the day, the Wolverines of Michigan defeated the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers, 49 - 16. We watched the first half of that game at a local bar and grill in GH, just not the favorite watering hole.

I still haven't gotten the felt on my puzzle table. Today for sure, maybe.

We did get to the farmer's market in Muskegon. It was enormous in scope. We picked up a few things just because we were there.

Lunch yesterday was barbecue sliders made from cabbage with my Coleslaw and buttered potatoes with parsley. I liked it, After that, I finished the crossword puzzle from the N. Y. Times with some assistance from Mary.

Before we left to view the game, we traveled to the library to pick up some cookbooks by the same author as Mary's current favorite cookbook that provided the recipe for lunch, The Happy Herbivore: Holidays and Gatherings, by Lindsay Nixon. That allowed Mary, and to some extent myself, to evaluate a possible purchase. As noted previously, so far the recipes from The Happy Herbivore: Holidays and Gatherings have been great.  (See previous paragraph)

I spent some time in the media room watching the Spartans before I retired to my horizontal position to listen to the game on the local radio station. I promptly fell asleep, awakening just in time to hear the sad outcome.

Currently, the temperature outside the WW is 40° before we bottom out at 38° later this early morning. As the day unfolds, we are supposed to rise to a high of 52° under sunny skies.

Today, nothing is on the schedule. A walk, that felt on the puzzle table, and that's about it. Perhaps some additional reading, but that is open a this time.

The sun will rise at 7:27 a.m. and set at 5:28 p.m. Ciao.

Saturday, November 7, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:30 a.m. in "The City."

Trainspotting yesterday was a mixed bag. The southbound run took place at 9:32 a.m., as EMD GP 38 locomotive #2057 traveled swiftly through our fair city, solo. In tow were five CHCs, two BCs, two DBTCs, two DWTCs, and bringing up the rear were three additional DBTCs. We didn't have to wait long to heat the sound of the train's whistle as it headed back north. What to my wondering eyes should appear? Just old #2057, with no Jolly Old Elf, no reindeer, and no cars in tow at 11:55 a.m.

I spent some time on the phone yesterday trying to reclaim some expired e-vouchers from a large national passenger railroad. It turned out to be an easier experience than I had anticipated. The people at the the other end of the call were very helpful and friendly, and fully accommodated my request. Mission accomplished.

We took the morning walk with STWD into the face of  a strong wind out of the west. We made it all the way to the newspaper box, then we turned around and hurried home. The intrepid weather dog wanted to dawdle, but we urged her onward in both directions.

Once home, Mary served up her latest creation garnered from her recently purchased cookbook. Marinated carrots that simulated hot dogs, and the Coleslaw that I had prepared before we left for the morning safari. I think it was my best Coleslaw to date. I also liked the marinated "hot dogs." Who knew?

I did get in a short amount of time with the girls and some time reading the newspaper and working the crossword. Both of those things occurred while I made my call to the national railroad and cleaned out the four pie pumpkins that I then placed in the oven. I tried the convection oven setting of the new oven and it does cook quickly. I ended up with about four cups of pumpkin, enough for a pie and enough for Sugar to share for breakfast for a few days. I also saved some seeds for roasting, which may or may not happen.

We stopped in to see Sally at the Post later in the afternoon.

Today, the regular morning walk, a visit to the indoor farmer's market in Muskegon, and some additional reading of the Grand Haven Tribune and the N. Y. Times from last Sunday. I also hope to get to that fitting of the felt on my puzzle table. If I keep trying, I might actually get it done.

Otherwise not much on tap other than a couple of college football games and some household chores. I don't plan to get up again until about 9:00 a.m. That's after the sun rises at 7:26 a.m. and long before it sets at 5:29 p.m. Right now the temperature outside the WW is reported as 47° as it drops to the overnight low of 35°. Later today, according to the NWS, the high temperature is supposed to get to 49°. At this point, I am in serious doubt about that current temperature. With the sun set to rise in about three hours, the temperature would have to fall an additional 12 degrees. I suppose anything is possible. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It has just passed 4:00 a.m. in "The City."

As expected, no trains yesterday. However, I expect some later today.

We did get a surprise yesterday. The previously mentioned installation of the replacement pipes for the gas mains was proceeding apace. The crew seemed to feel a need to tear up a great deal of the sidewalk along the street just west of the PE, and to do that required a tremendous amount of pounding with a pneumatic hammer. The entire PE was shaking and the noise was such that Mary couldn't open the window in her office.

We needed to get out of the driveway as the men were working, and that meant that they had to move their truck and lift the pipe so that we could drive the car underneath. Mary surprised me and drove right under. Mary was assured by the workers that the pipe would be in the ground yesterday. However when we returned, they were gone and the pipe was above ground. Apparently they had failed to account for the loss of daylight. We traveled to the grocery store in Spring Lake to exchange something and to pick up a few additional items. The entire process at Orchard Market went smoothly.

By the by, with help from our IT guru, my new computer is up and running. It is terrific. There are no conflicts with the sound output from the various programs.

Speaking of Mary, she made a new dish using baked tofu for lunch. It mimics egg salad only it is tastier and healthier. Accompanied by the the steamed broccoli she had prepared the day before, it made for an excellent luncheon. I'd recommend both.

I did get in some time playing with the girls, and that is always a good feeling.

We didn't make it out with STWD until about 1:00 p.m. Sugar is fine with that as long as she gets her morning quotient of biscuits. However, our plans to get her a pawdicure had to be put on hold.

More on Mary. She accepted another indexing job. It looks interesting. In addition, she turned down another job for which she didn't have time. She is also awaiting some updates on another job that seems to keep getting pushed back.

Today, rain/T-storms are expected, and in fact, it is raining outside the Weather Window (WW) right now. I don't have any plans for either outdoors nor indoors today. Mary has a chat session later this afternoon. Before that, we should be able to get in a morning walk with the intrepid weather dog, weather permitting. I can't wait to see what Mary has on the breakfast menu. Maybe I'll get to that felt on my puzzle table today too.

A sports update. The Wolverines of Michigan square off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The MSU Spartans face the Cornhuskers of Nebraska at 7:00 p.m. later that evening. The NIU Huskies won their last game 32 - 27 on Tuesday night over the Toledo Rockets. The play again on Wednesday 11/11 against the Bulls of Buffalo.

The high temperature today will be around 52°, which with that aforementioned rain and wind will undoubtedly feel chilly, after yesterday's high of 66°.  That's part of the forecast from the NWS.

The sun will rise today at 7:25 a.m and set at 5:30 p.m. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is shortly before 1:00 a.m. in "The City."

The weather yesterday was fabulous. Maybe not quite as warm as predicted, but still very nice, and that encouraged Mary and me to take a long walk with STWD. We passed the library just in time to see the southbound run of the Mid-Michigan Railroad as locomotives 2057 and 2019 passed through "The City."  In tow were 14 CHCs, seven DBTCs, four DWTCs, and three GTCs. Later in the afternoon, I heard that lonesome whistle blow south of "The City." The same tandem of locomotives was passing through heading north, towing one BC, eight CHCs, one DBTC, and a lone GT that was bringing up the rear. I don't anticipate any trains today.

We had to travel to the big box electronics store to get an adapter for mating my "old" monitor with my new computer. That in itself was a study in confusion, both on our part and that of the personnel at the store. We finally determined what we needed and purchased it. I am now awaiting our IT person's recuperation for the activation and final transference of the important things from my old computer to the new.

When we returned home, we saw a pile of yellow pipe fittings and orange cones in the parkway. I took nine lawn and leaf bags to the curb along with the trash and the recycling bins. A few minutes later, a truck and trailer with three workmen showed up and dropped off several sections of yellow coated pipe. I asked if I should be worried and was told that the anticipated repairs would take place on the street immediately to the west of the PE. The fittings and pipes are for a repair to the gas main on that street.

That about sums up what I didn't accomplish yesterday. I played with the girls some and read part of the non-fiction book by President Jimmy Carter entitled A Life Full of Reflections at Ninety. I have read many of his books over the years and have always enjoyed them. This appears to be another with a similar level of enjoyment.

That is about all I have to say about yesterday. The sun will rise at 7:24 a.m. this morning and set at 5:32 p.m. tonight. In between, I hope to take a walk with Mary and STWD, get my new computer up and running, read more of President Carter's book, and play with the girls. That should make for a full day. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City."

As expected, yesterday was gorgeous. Mary and I set out with STWD towards my orthopedist appointment. They turned off part way there as I continued on. I'm done for six months and my knees feel great.

Mary made lunch when I returned home and I liked it all. She finally found the mushrooms she likes to make her gravy and with her latest incarnation of greens, small potatoes and veggies cutlets all smothered in that gravy, lunch was delicious. I wouldn't change a thing. She was off to her chat session and I was off to the man cave and the back forty of the PE to do a few things.

We did make it to Coopersville, and picked up a few things before we traveled across the Grand River on the recently opened M 231. The country side is very scenic and the people who live out there are probably not happy with the intrusion. Speaking as a Grand Havener, I am thrilled to have some of the traffic diverted off of Beacon Street and moved further west. If all goes well, the plans to remove our tree lined median to speed traffic may be scrapped. We stopped in at the Embassy Bar and Grill for some snacks and then headed home.

No trains yesterday.

Today we have nothing on tap. Mary may get back to her arts and crafts while I finally get that felt on my puzzle assembly table.

Mary visited The Bookman to pick up a book she had ordered and came back with another cookbook in tow. I perused it and it is filled with terrific recipes. I have it on good authority that one of those recipes will appear later this morning for breakfast.

Later today, my new computer may join the network. That depends on whether our computer guru is feeling better. If not, it can wait for a better time.

I will get to more playtime with the girls and finish more of the N. Y. Times. I also have that book I have been trying to get to. Having no specific plans means I am flexible.

Today's weather will be much like yesterday. Partly cloudy skies, a high temperature of 66° and a perfect opportunity to walk more in this unusually balmy November weather with Mary and STWD. That's after that aforementioned breakfast.

The sun will rise at 7:22 a.m. and set at 5:33 p.m. In between, we should see a north and southbound train run. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:30 a.m in "The City."

If yesterday was a beautiful day, and it was here in GH, today promises to be even better. We have a current temperature of 55°as we fall to the overnight low of 49°. But wait, there's more! Our high today should be a minimum of 64° with ample blue skies, but I think the temperature may exceed that. Isn't the fall in MI both exciting and terrific?

We stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time...Oops, I was channeling Carole King there for a second. Actually it wasn't all morning, but a sizable portion of it. STWD was with us and of course after a time, she was ready for some biscuit action and then wanted to go down for breakfast. We finally obliged.

Good happenings at breakfast/lunch. Sweet potatoes on the side to accompany non-tuna sandwiches. Then we were off for our afternoon adventures.

We started with some donations to the Goodwill™ store. Next, was a stop at the big box electronics retailer so that I could get a replacement for this old and nearly obsolete computer. We then segued to the big box home center to get some things. A stop for gas was followed by a stop at the food donation center in Spring Lake. Orchard Market in the same town was the follow up to that stop. Staying with the Spring Lake theme, we stopped in at Stan's Tavern for some adult beverages. By then we were hungry and tired, so a stop at Arturo's Tacos for dinner ensued. Home at last, we unloaded as much as necessary and then the intrepid weather dog was released and had her dinner before ours. Phew, just rehashing our day wore me out all over again.

Yes, trains were spotted, but the only thing I know for sure were the presence of the same locomotives as usual and the same types of rail cars. Times, approximately 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

A little TV and I was ready to drop, so I did.

Today I have my fifth and final semi-annual visit to the orthopedist for my knees. Then I am done for another six months. That visit may be followed by a short trip to Coopersville for some garlic grown by the local Amish farmers. Perhaps a trip on the newly opened M 231 bypass over the Grand River and then home. Both before and after, I have some household chores to do and some reading too while Mary chats and I do that reading. It took us most of last week to read the N. Y. Times,  from the previous Sunday, and now we have another. Like I've often said, "Retirement is very busy."

The sun will rise at 7:21 a.m. this morning and set at 5:34 p.m. Ciao.

Monday, November 2, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:30 a.m. in "The City."

Sunday was a relatively quiet day. I took the morning walk with STWD as Mary made her way to Health Hutt. We had just started out when Sugar heard the sound of firecrackers, and all bets were off. We managed to get done what needed to be done, but Sugar was in for the day once we got home.

I watched the Bears lose to the Vikings 20 - 23 as I read part of the pulp novel that I started late Saturday night. I just finished that book about one hour ago. An easy read and it didn't have large print.

Mostly I didn't do anything yesterday. I did get in about 45 minutes of play time with the girls, and then I revised some music in which I had detected errors when I was playing.

Mary made breakfast/lunch of grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches to go with the Coleslaw that I made on Saturday. Dinner was veggie burgers, more of the Coleslaw, and boiled potatoes with margarine and parsley. I liked both meals.

The temperature yesterday was pleasant and Mary and I took a walk downtown to see what we could see after watching the heartbreaking loss by the Bears. Not as bad as the loss by the Lions to the Chiefs in London earlier in the day, by a score of 10 - 45.

The Royals and the Mets are in extra innings, but it looks as though the crowd in NYC is about to hear that old song, Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey, Good Bye from the Royals, who scored five runs in the top of the 12th to take a 7 - 2 lead. The Mets came to bat, but to paraphrase the immortal Yogi Berra, It's over when it's over, and it's over for the Mets. Time to call it a season as the final score was 7 - 2 in favor of the World Series champion K.C. Royals. Sadly, non of the three teams with the best records were in the World Series.

Later today, our high temperature will be 64°, the same high temperature that is in the forecast through Thursday, with mostly clear skies. Friday's forecast from the NWS shows rain and a high of 53°.

Later today, I need to get to work on my puzzle table. If I try a bit harder, I'll get the felt that we purchased affixed to the top and then get the puzzle going. I just have too many things to do. Who knew that retirement could be so taxing? I have another book on the shelf and a few more on order or on hold at the library. Mary has an index or two coming in, so I may not get to read for pleasure for a few days.

The sun will rise at 7:20 a.m. and set at 5:30 p.m. Ciao.

Sunday, November 1, 2015

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:30 a.m. EST in "The City." What a red letter day. I reset my watch all by myself. In year's past, I had to enlist Stephany's assistance to get the job done. I am learning sensei.

Yesterday was an interesting day. I made Cole slaw which we had with sandwiches for lunch. Unfortunately, Mary had to go out for the bread we didn't get earlier in the day when we were out. The old loaf had penicillin starter on it. That is one of the downsides to preservative free breads. But generally speaking, the lack of preservatives is the better way to go.

It was a dark and stormy day. Well it was stormy and it was sometimes dark, so while that phrase is accurate, it is still hackneyed. The temperature never got out of the 40° range, and the high temperature was not exactly warm. But when I went for the morning safari with STWD, we were out and back very quickly due to the rainy conditions. It was when Sugar and I returned that Mary discovered that previously described loaf of bread.

Later, Mary made a dinner of veggie cutlets and what I think she called Provencal Squash Au Gratin. Don't quote me on that name, but the dish was excellent. She found the recipe in her cookbook, The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen. No matter, it is a keeper. The required winter squash, butternut, was one of the reasons for our visit to the final farmer's market of the season.

We met just a few ghosts, goblins, and princesses last night. The weather was probably a limiting factor. Alas, that means I'll have to enjoy more Smarties™.

I'd like to say that I accomplished my goals yesterday, but I got sidetracked so many times, that I missed my targets. Oh well, another day will be dawning soon, in fact at 6:19 a.m. Wow, that seems weird to write

Sports yesterday was a bit spotty. The Michigan Wolverines won the rights to the Little Brown Jug with a 29 - 26 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers. However, in the process, MI QB Jake Rudock left the game in the third quarter after a ferocious hit from the Golden Gophers defense that knocked Rudock's helmet off. Rudock's backup let no doubt why Rudock was named the starter by Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh at the start of the season.

It took a goal line stand by the Wolverines and an inexplicable too long to develop passing play by MN, that fell incomplete. The MN QB tried to sneak it in with two seconds left, but he was stuffed. Elsewhere, the Royals moved one game closer to the goal of a World Series victory over the Mets, with a 5 - 3 win.

In many ways, I wanted the Mets to win the series, because that would in some small way vindicate the losses the Cubs suffered at the hands of the Mets in the NLCS.

It will be warmer today and windy. We should be able to take the morning safari without much trouble. However, I am having some twinges in my Yak that come and ago, so for me it will be a game time decision.

The sun will set at 4:36 p.m.. By 5:00 p.m., it will be dark, but non- stormy night. Monday thru Thursday are predicted to be very nice. Ciao.
