Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in The City."

The current temperature is 54° under mostly clear skies. Later today, after the sun rises @ 6:09 a.m. and long before it sets @ 9:16 p.m., we are expecting a high of 64° under partly cloudy skies. There is a 20% chance for a stray T-storm, but that forecast is good enough for John to continue outdoor work on the front porch of the manse.

Later this evening, I'll be off to the art gallery around the corner for another drawing lesson. I have been working on my own over the holiday weekend, and I feel I am doing well, but I am in need of additional guidance.

Mary has been hard at work in the kitchen creating additional batches of tofu jerky and other dishes. Her recent creation of hash for brunch is an example of using two recipes to make another recipe that turned out better than either individually. Two of her recent Reuben burgers became part of a hash recipe that was supposed to use tempeh, but which we both think turned out better using the Reuben burgers instead. We ate the balance of the burgers for dinner.

I spent some time watering in the gardens yesterday to ensure the continued survival of our new plantings and veggies.  So far, they are looking good. Today, we have a few errands to run and that means that Ginger will be @ daycare for part of the day. She seems to like it, so we feel better about it too. Sugar is fine with just being home alone.

Sports news yesterday was mostly bad. I said yesterday that the Tigers are a bad baseball team, but at this point in the MLB season, I have to apply that label to the Cubs too. A team that won 103 games last year en route to the World Championship, based largely on the strength of their pitching and solid hitting is floundering this year. They are struggling to stay @ the .500 mark. With 50 games already played, the Cubs have a record of 25 - 25 in the NL Central following their loss to the Padres yesterday, 2 - 5. I mistakenly named the Dodgers as the Cubs' opponents yesterday, but a change of scenery made no difference. A loss is a loss and mediocrity is mediocrity. The Cubs hope to change their ways tonight in San Diego @ 10:10 p.m. Not exactly a June Swoon in May, but cause for concern.

The Tigers had one bright spot in their dismal season yesterday. They defeated the 2015 World Champion Kansas City Royals, 10 - 7. The 21 - 29 Royals have lost many of the players from that 2015 team to free-agency and the Cubs may face similar prospects this year. Sigh. The Tigers are still in 4th place in the AL Central with their current record of 24 - 27. They once again get to play a team worse than themselves in Kansas City tonight @ 8:15 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox fell to that other team from Chicago yesterday, 4 - 5. The Sox are still in 2nd place in the AL East with a record of 27 - 23, but they need more consistent pitching in spite of the solid return of David Price from the DL for the first time this season yesterday. The Red Sox face that other team again tonight @ 8:10 p.m.

The Caps lost to the Dragons yesterday 2 - 4. The Caps still maintain a one-game lead over the Dragons in the MWL East with a 34 - 16 record. The Caps return to the playing field tonight against the 25 - 25 Great Lakes Loons in Midland, MI tonight @ 7:05 p.m.

Otherwise, there is little of consequence on tap for today. Errands, drawing class, playing with the girls and my bodhran and walking with the fur-children will consume much of our day. Ciao.

Good afternoon or good morning, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:00 p.m. in "The City."

I just have to start with the weather and the forecast from the NWS. My DTWS is reporting a current temperature of 73° under sunny skies, using as its source, the FPMS, whereas the NWS in GR is reporting 66°, with partly cloudy skies. In either case, it is an absolutely gorgeous day here.

We started our morning by feeding the fur-children and then I took STWD for a walk, solo. Mary stayed behind with GTTSD in preparation for her first ever Memorial Day Parade here in GH.
My feet, and Ginger, nearly ready to go.

Ginger eagerly enjoying the parade.
By and large, Ginger acquitted herself very well, even receiving pets from some of the children viewing the parade.

What would be a Memorial Day Parade without the usual cast of veterans from our own local Sgt, Alvin Jonker VFW Post #2326? Also represented was our own local Charles Conklin American Legion PoOst #28.

An assortment of Jeeps was there to carry the participants part of the way

All ages and

All styles!

The dignitaries were followed by the local Grand Haven High School Marching Buccaneers Band.

The Color Guard for the band.

The Band

Of course, as befits our status as Coast Guard City USA, the "Coasties were there too.

Indeed
The Hooligans provided an aerial flyover as part of the remembrances of those lost to the wars.
A solo flyover

The same, looking onto the sun

A formation flyover.

Lastly, what would be a local parade without a John Deere tractor?

Looking Good!
Sports news yesterday included a crash-marred Indy 500 race that was stopped a few times due to some horrendous crashes including one early in the race that involved pole sitter Scott Dixon. His car was nearly torn in half, but the "Safety Cell" for the driver and the SAFER barrier walls that are primarily used at oval tracks like Indy, allowed all of the drivers to walk away from their respective crashes. The 500 was won by Takuma Sato or Sato San, as 2nd place finisher Helio Castroneves called him Sato is shown here in his winning entry, picture courtesy of Dorron Cummings of the Associated Press.

Elsewhere in sports, the Cubs once again fell to the Dodgers 4 - 9. to fall to 25 -24 in the NLCentral and 3rd place. The Cubs finish their series with the Dodgers today @ 4:40 p.m.

The Tigers are a bad baseball team. They lost once again to that other team from Chicago by a score of 2 - 7 to fall to 23 - 27 and 4th place in the AL Central. The Tigers play the Royals tonight @ 7:15 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox lost to the Mariners 0 - 5 to become a 27 - 22 team in the AL East, three games behind the division-leading Yankees. The Red Sox move on to face that other team from Chicago @ 2:10 p.m. with David Price retruning from the DL for the first time this season.

Good news from the Caps as they defeated the Dayton Dragons 2 - 1 to end the day with an MWL East record of 34 -15, two full games ahead of the Dragons, whom they play again today starting @ 2:00 p.m.

As noted, we walked the fur-children and I watered the gardens of the vast PE. Mary made a brunch of extremely tasty corned beest hash and she is now in the kitchen doing some batch cooking. I was playing with my bodhran Irish drum and Ivy, my 12 string guitar prior to bloggong, so life is good. Ciao.

Sunday, May 28, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City."

Yesterday was a busy day here on the PE. John finished the railings of the front porch and Mary and I gardened in the back-forty. I planted three new rose bushes, moved several other perennials, and watered all the new plantings. Mary assisted by mowing the vast lawns of the PE and designating the various planting sites for the roses and the transplantations.

Naturally, like all things related to the PE and other activities, the various tasks took longer than expected. That means that John's hopes for an end to the painting will wait until Tuesday and the gardening took longer than either Mary or myself had planned. Oh well, that's the "Way it is" as Walter Cronkite used to intone at the end of the CBS Evening News many years ago.

I was smart enough to wear my yak brace to avoid further stress on my yak. Mary was surprised, but I can learn. In another surprise for Mary, I went downstairs yesterday morning to feed the fur-children and ate a banana without being coaxed or prodded. Tastes evolve.

Mary got busy in the kitchen yesterday after gardening and after I washed what seemed like an endless supply of dirty dishes and utensils. She made a batch of vegan Reuben Burgers that incorporated numerous spices and steaming of the burgers for one hour. Unfortunately, the water boiled away and left stains in the large pressure cooker that we use for many cooking tasks. I spent about 20 minutes earlier this morning removing the majority of the stains with steel wool. There are still some marks, but they will not affect usage for other meals. In addition, I washed the various trays of the food dehydrator that she used to make another batch of tofu jerky with a very different marinade that is much better than the last attempt. By the by, the burgers taste superb. I also made another batch of my world famous Coleslaw. That awaits another meal.

Sports news yesterday was mixed. The Cubs lost another game to the Dodgers, this time by a score of 0 - 5. That loss dropped the Cubs back into 3rd place in the NL Central with a record of 25 - 23. The Cub's' bats have gone to sleep on the West Coast. Plus, their pitching has been sleep-walking too. The Cubs and the Dodgers play again today @ 4:10 p.m.

The Tigers woke up long enough to snatch a win from that other team from Chicago, 4 - 3. That win gives the Tigers an AL Central record of 23 - 26, still good enough for 3rd place. The Tigers play that other team again today @ 2:10 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox kept up their winning ways with a 6 - 0 win over the Mariners. That gives the Sox a 27 - 21 record in the AL East, but still only good enough for 2nd place. The Sox play the Mariners again today @ 1:35 p.m.

The Caps finally lost one, this time to the Dayton Dragons, 2 - 5. That loss still allows the Caps to remain in 1st place in the MWL East, one game ahead of the Dragons. Both teams play again tonight @ 7:00 p.m.

Speaking of sports, as Howard Cosell used to say many years ago, the Greatest Spectacle in Motor Racing is still scheduled for today @ 12:19 p.m. That assumes that the rains hold off and allow pole sitter Scott Dixon and the other 32 drivers to take to the track and try to avoid mistakes that lead to crashes and delays. I'll be in the media room to watch if everything goes as planned.

We have a current temperature of 58° to 62° depending on the source consulted. The NWS is forecasting a 60% chance for T-storms this morning. Otherwise, not much is on tap for today. More reading, more batch cooking for Mary and more walks with the fur-children. The sun will rise @ 6:10 a.m. and set @ 9:14 p.m. Ciao.

Saturday, May 27, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:30 a.m. in "The City."

I've been playing with Abaegael for the last hour or so, just because I can. I enjoy my alone time with any of the girls at this hour of the day. Mary never interrupts me at any time unless there is something pressing that needs to be handled, but I like to be undisturbed sometimes, no fur-children and no extra things to get in the way.

But I digress. I had great hopes to keep this blog shorter than most, but that's not how it is turning out.

I baked a great loaf of rye bread yesterday while I was doing the laundry. I like baking and in this case, the end result, after a misfire, was the best loaf of dark rye bread I've ever baked. Great taste, great texture and two-thumbs up from all critics. I forgot to take a picture, but take my word for it, this really is a great loaf of bread.

The Cubs fell on hard times last night in LA, losing to the Dodgers 0 - 4. As has become the case too often this season, Jake Arrieta wasn't effective. Coupled with a lack of offense and the loss dropped the Cubs to 25 - 22. However, they are now in 1st place in the NL Central, one-half game ahead of the Brewers and one full game ahead of the Cardinals, both of whom also lost. The Cubs play again today in LA LA land against the Dodgers @ 7:15 p.m. EDT.

The Tigers are still not faring very well. I heard one of their announcers state that the Tigers need to improve their pitching. Ya think? The Tigers fell to that other team from Chicago, 2 - 8. to drop to 22 - 25 in the AL Central, still good enough for 3rd place. The Tigers and that other team play again today @ 2:10 p.m. EDT.

My beloved Red Sox had a good day as they defeated the Mariners yesterday 3 - 0. That moves the Sox to 26 - 21, good enough for 2nd place in the AL East. The Sox and the Mariners play again tonight @ 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Really good news for the Caps and their fans. The Caps defeated the Dayton Dragons 7 - 5 yesterday in 12 innings to move to 33 - 14 in the MWL East, two full games ahead of the Dragons. The Caps play the Dragons again tonight in Dayton @ 7:00 p.m. EDT.

John is making progress on the painting of the front porch. However, being the perfectionist that he is, it is taking longer than he anticipated. We are grateful for his attention to detail. Plus, he is a good test subject for my bread baking efforts. In short, it's all good.

We have a current temperature of 54° under partly cloudy skies. Later today after the sun rises @ 6:10 a.m. and well before it sets @ 9:13 p.m., the NWS is forecasting a high of 73° under mostly sunny skies. Sunday's high will be similar, but the chance of showers increases to 80%. Good for our gardens, but not good for picnics nor auto racing.

Speaking of auto racing, it is a good thing that the organizers of the "Greatest Spectacle in Motor Racing" the Indianapolis 500, set aside a rain day on Monday when the temperatures will be in the upper 70s and the chance of rain/T-storms is only 10% as compared to the 80% chance on Sunday.

Otherwise, today we will be walking with the fur-children, perhaps to the farmer's market and also taking a short trip by car to the City Farmer for some additional flowers and things for our gardens. John will be by to paint more before taking a couple of days off for the Memorial Day holiday. Ciao.

homeGood morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:30 ayem in "The City." You may be wondering why I'm using this odd form of a.m., but it is the way that Burt "B.S." Levey used the term in Toly's Ghost.

At 3:30 a.m., all is well, to borrow from the olde Town Criers. We have a current temperature of 57° under cloudy skies. I was out with Ginger around 3:00 ayem, and it was quite pleasant. Later today after the sun rises @ 6:12 ayem and long before it sets @ 9:12 p.m., the day will be partly cloudy with only a 20% chance of more showers,

We are getting closer to this olde house being somewhat more complete. John sealed the holes under the sinks and finished the weather stripping of the door leading to the deck. He also power washed the front porch and railings in preparation for repainting. Now all that is left is some minor carpentry and hand scraping before painting.

We made it to our chiropractor's appointment and so I continue to improve the condition of my baking yak and Mary got a good tune-up.

The Cubs eked out a victory over the Giants by a slim 5 - 4 score last night. That finds the Cubs with an overall record of 24 - 21 n the NL Central, still only good for 3rd place, one-half game behind the Brewers and the Cardinals, with their records of 25 - 21 and 23 - 20 respectively. The Cubs and the Giants play again today @ 2:20 p.m.

The Tigers slightly righted the ship against the Astros last night with a 6 - 3 win over the Astros. However, that still finds the Tigers in 3rd place in the AL Central with a 22 - 23 record. The Tigers and the Astros play again tonight @ 8:10 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox defeated the Rangers, 9 - 4 last night. However, that victory still leaves them in 3rd place in the AL East with a 24 - 21 record. They play the Rangers again tonight @ 7:10 p.m.

The Caps moved up to sole possession of 1st place in the MWL East with a solid win over the TinCaps, 5 - 0. That gives the Caps a one-half game lead over the 2nd place Dayton Dragons with the Caps record of 31 - 14. The Caps and the TinCaps play again tonight @ 6:35 p.m.

Today we are off to Holland for several errands. A stop @ the car dealer for regular service, a stop @ Teerman's for an exchange and a purchase, and a stop @ the frame store to pick up our framed newspapers that proclaim the Cubs victory in the 2016 World Series. They will look great on our living-room wall.

John will be by while we are out to attempt to finish the front porch preparations. Ginger will be going to daycare for her own well-being while we are on our extended errand trip. Sugar will be going along to the groomer/daycare center before we leave her @ home. Sugar will be getting a pawdicure there.

I plan to read more, draw more, play with the girls more and generally try to do very little. Mary will be driving and I'll be navigating when our GPS isn't explicit enough. Ciao.

Wednesday, May 24, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City."

Yesterday I was a busy beaver. I did some work in the gardens of the vast PE. I baked a terrific loaf of bread if I do so so myself, and I went to my first ever drawing class at the local art studio just around the corner. All of my endeavors turned out great.

Here is a picture of my baking efforts. Everyone who was present shortly after the time that the bread came out of the oven can attest to the quality of the outcome. Everyone includes yours truly, Mary, Ginger, and John. It came out larger than I expected, but that means there is more to enjoy.

This loaf of bread tastes even better than it looks!

I'd include a picture of the vast lawns and gardens of the PE, but that would seem redundant at this juncture. My first still-life drawing is not yet ready for prime time, but I am satisfied with my efforts and I'll be going back next week for more coaching. I've always liked drawing, but I never felt confident in my efforts. I feel better now.

GTTSD and I observed the passage of locomotives 2057 and 2019 as they plied the rails of the RSTL heading south yesterday morning @ 10:13 a.m. In tow were four CHCs, five DWTCs, and 15 DBTCs. At 4:35 p.m., Ginger and I observed the same locomotives passing by towing 13 DBTCs and six DWTCs, one with a green stripe around its mid-section.

I also spent quite a bit of time reading Toly's Ghost on my tablet version of Amazon's Kindle e-reader. This book is part of a series that was written many years ago by B. S. Levy. I 'll let your imagination decide what the BS stands in for. However, Levy is a gear-head who writes fiction liberally laced with facts about auto racing in the U.S. and Europe in the late 1950s and early 1960s. As Adam can attest, you need to be a gear-head yourself to fully appreciate the stories.

I suppose that's like the book Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, written by John R. Powers back in the 1980s. His efforts produced a book and a play of the same name which Mary assured me after I read it was better appreciated by people who grew up in the Catholic faith in the 1960s, especially on the Southside of Chicago. Powers also wrote other books like The Last Catholic in America, which had a similar theme.

I'm not certain, but there are probably books that only people of the Jewish faith can fully appreciate too. I also enjoy reading romances and mysteries that are based on the Amish religion that I enjoy, but which are probably best appreciated by people of that faith.

Sports news yesterday was mostly good. The Cubs came out of the gate swinging and they never looked back as Kyle Schwarber hammered a ball onto Sheffield Avenue in the bottom of the 1st and Jason Heyward nailed another in the bottom of the 2nd en route to a 4 - 1 win over the visiting Giants. That gives the Cubs an NL Central record of  23 - 21, still only good enough for 3rd place. They play the Giants again tonight @ 8:05 p.m.

The Tigers didn't fare so well as they fell to the Astros 2 - 6. That loss drops them to 21 - 23 in the AL Central, still good enough for 3rd place. They play the Astros again tonight @ 8:10.

My beloved Red Sox handily dispatched the Texas Rangers yesterday, 11 - 6. That gives the Sox an AL East record of 23 -21, and surprise, also good enough for 3rd place. They play the Rangers again tonight @ 7:10 p.m.

The Caps once again defeated the TinCaps, this time by a slim margin of 2 - 1, to move into a 1st place tie with the Dayton Dragons @ 30 - 14 in the MWL East. The Caps play the TinCaps again today @ 11:00 a.m.

We have John over again today to do more repairs to the manse. We sometimes think he should have his own room so he could just get up in the morning and start on the next task in our version of This Old House. We don't mind because the house in itself is a treasure that needs to be preserved.

Otherwise. I plan to read more and that's about it before we go to our appointment at the chiropractor for maintenance.

The sun will rise this morning @ 6:12 a.m. and set @ 9"11 p.m. Right now we have a current temperature of 57° according to my DTWS and 55° according to the NWS in GR. In both cases, I can personally attest to the presence of rain. The NWS is also predicting rain/T-storms later today with a 60% chance of certainty. Ciao.

Tuesday, May 23, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:00 a.m. in "The City."

The current temperature is 58° under mostly cloudy skies. Today, the NWS is forecasting a 50% chance of showers/T-storms with a high temperature of 62°.

We planted our latest round of vegetable plants yesterday and it looks like we may have to add additional water for their health and well-being if the rains don't come. I did some trimming of the grass that grew extra long when we were OOT, so that's one thing off my list. I still have to mow the vast lawns of the PE, but that shouldn't take too long.

We are seeing the first blooms from the iris plants that I separated last year and they are looking great. Mary was prepared to consign the plants to the compost pile if nothing happened this year. Like her heirloom tomato plants from last year, I had faith, and it was rewarded.

I made all of my appointments on Monday and my hair looks better, my yak feels better, and I got more reading done. In short, all good.

We dropped Ginger off @ daycare yesterday afternoon and traveled to Muskegon to modify our carpet order and pick out some new furniture for the living and dining rooms. It will take up to eight weeks to arrive, but that's okay, we have the current furnishings in place, as of now.

We learned that the older part of the manse has southern yellow pine floors under the existing tacked-down carpeting, so we arranged to have those floors refinished rather than covering them with new carpet. We saw floors made of this wood when we were recently in D.C. @ Mt. Vernon, and the look is great and period correct for a home built in 1903. So, that is the reason for the modified carpeting plans. Naturally, new floors require new furniture. : - ).

Tuesday, John will be by to replace some weather stripping and the rear storm door off the deck and sealing some rather large holes under the sinks downstairs that look, and in fact are, all too inviting to mice in the spring and fall. At some point, he'll be doing the refinishing of the floors in the manse too, but not too soon, I hope.

The Cubs fell to the Giants Monday night by a final score of 4 - 6 in spite of some home runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. John Lackey surrendered some runs to the weak-hitting Giants early and the Cubs never staged a real comeback. They are still in 3rd place in the NL Central with an overall record of 22 - 21. The Cubs and the Giants play Tuesday night @ 7:05 p.m.

The Tigers fell to the Houston Astros, 0 - 1. That drops them to 21 - 22 in the AL Central, but they are still in 3rd place. They play in Houston again tonight @ 8:10 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox were off. They play tonight in Texas against the Rangers @ 7:10 p.m.

The Caps hammered the TinCaps 12 - 2 in Monday's game to move to 29 - 14 in the MWL East division, 1/2 game behind the Dayton Dragons.

Otherwise, I plan to read more, play with the girls more and generally kick back and enjoy retirement more.

The sun will rise on Tuesday @ 6:13 a.m. and set @ 9:10 p.m. Ciao.

Monday, May 22, 2017

Good morning GH. It is just past 10:30 a.m. in "The City." The sun has already risen into sunny skies on a day when the NWS is forecasting a high temperature of 66°. The sun will set tonight @ 9:09 p.m. The NWS is also forecasting a slight chance of rain this evening. Tomorrow's weather looks dicier and that means similar temperatures but a 60% chance of rain.

Yesterday, my yak was still aching and so STWD and I took a short walk while Mary and GTTSD walked to Kite Fest 2017 at the beach. Based on the pictures that I am posting here, it looks as though the rains kept the crowds down, but the kites themselves were up and spectacular.

Some kites were just getting off the ground when Mary and Ginger arrived.

As you can see, the crowds were down this year.

Our south pier looks barren with the catwalk removed.

Once aloft, the kites looked great!

I guess you can say, that "Pigs do fly!"

What's Kite Fest in GH without food trucks?

Although she is a trouper, Ginger was too pooped to pop by the end of the walk to the beach and back.

In a rare photo, Sugar seemed unfazed by Ginger's exhaustion.

In sports news, the Cubs were victorious over the Brewers, 13 - 6. That gives the Cubs an NL Central record of 22 - 20, good for 3rd place. They play the Giants @ "The Friendly Confines" tonight @ 8:05 p.m.

The Tigers, unfortunately, lost to the Rangers, by a score of 2 - 5. That gives the Tigers an AL Central record of 21 - 21, also good for 3rd place. The Tigers play the Astros in Houston tonight @ 8:05 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox handily defeated the As in Oakland by a final score of 12 - 3. That gives the beloved an AL East record of 22 - 21, also good for 3rd place. They are off today and then they play the Rangers @ Fenway @ 7:10 p.m. tomorrow night.

The Caps were rained out yesterday, but they attempt to play again tonight at the Fifth/Third Ballpark against the Ft. Wayne TinCaps @ 6:35 p.m. They remain in 2nd place in the MWL Eastern division with a record of 28 - 15, 1.5 games behind Mary's sentimental favorites, the Dayton Dragons.

Today I have my various appointments, we have a visit from John about some work we are planning and Mary has plans to listen to the radio and watch bad news on TV after the morning safari with the fur-children. Ciao.

Sunday, May 21, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever ou may be. It is just past 6:30 a.m. in "The City."

The sun already rose @ 6:15 a.m., and it will set later this evening @ 9:08 p.m. We have a current temperature of 58° under cloudy skies. The NWS is forecasting rain and possible T-storms for this morning around 8:00 a.m. and then cloudy conditions after 11:00 a.m. Tomorrow looks like a sunny day with a high around 63°.

Given all of the things I have to get done tomorrow, that is a welcome forecast. I have to get my few hairs cut and my beard trimmed, I have to visit the chiropractor for my yak, and I have so much reading to do that I don't know if I will ever get it done. Retirement is so demanding.

Since I've been away from the blogosphere for many days on a visit to Washington, D.C., I'll just pick things up from here.

The Cubs were rained out yesterday at "The Friendly Confines" which haven't been that friendly of late. At any rate, the Cubs are currently residing in 3rd place in the NL Central with an overall record of 21 - 20. They try to play the Brewers again today @ 2:20 p.m.

The Tigers have an identical record of 21 - 20, also good for 3rd place in the AL Central. They play the Rangers in TX tonight @ 8:05 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox are struggling with an overall record of 21 - 21, only good enough for 4th place in the AL East. They play the "As" in Oakland this afternoon @ 4:05 p.m.

The Caps are doing well with an overall 2nd place record in the MWL East of 28 - 14 following their win over the Lake, County Captains yesterday by a final score of 6 - 2. They play the Captains again today @ 1:30 p.m.

We had a great trip on AMTRAK with the exception of straining my yak while in D.C. That's why I am visiting the chiropractor tomorrow. My yak is feeling better, but I am the impatient type.

I/we took numerous pictures on our trip. The best way to chronicle them is to include as many as I can here and let you pick out the ones of interest to you. So here goes.

For Adam., this is a roundhouse in Maryland or Virginia

Another view.

As noted previously, an undiscovered treasure in D.C.
I think that's enough for today. My printer is offline and I can't print anything. I was trying to print a revised index to my Irish Jam music, but so far, no luck. Maybe Mary can offer somadvice. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:30 a.m. in "The City."

I was outside with Ginger @ 12:30 a.m. and the weather is as advertised, 53° and cloudy. We had a nice warm day yesterday with a high that was in the 70s. Later today, after the sun rises @ 6:25 a.m., the NWS is forecasting a high of 65° under partly cloudy skies. The sun will set later today @ 8:57 p.m.

The only trainspotting yesterday was the MMRR signal inspector doing his monthly rounds to check the signals for a safety. As long as his inspection doesn't find any problems, the crossing is good to go for another month. What happens between his checks is anybody's guess.

I got our veggies planted yesterday along with mowing the vast lawns of the PE. Ginger was out with me when I was planting. In between, I made another extraordinary beest and did some other indoor chores.

Sports news yesterday was 3/4 bad. The Cubs lost to the Rockies, 0 - 3. That drops the Cubs into 4th place in the NL Central with a record of 17 - 17. The Cubs are off until Friday when they play the Cardinals in St. Louis @ 8:15 p.m. The Cubs rock-solid pitching staff of last season has turned into the Jello Squad this season.

The Tigers fared no better as they lost to the D'Backs, 1 - 7. The Tigers pitching staff is having a rough season too. The loss finds the Tigers solidly in 3d place in the AL Central with a 16 - 16 record. The Tigers play the Angels in La La land tonight @ 10:07 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox lost to the Brewers yesterday, 4 - 7. That gives the Sox a 17 - 16 record in the AL East, good only for 3rd place. The Sox and the Brewers play again today @ 1:10 p.m.

The lone bright spot was the Caps 3 - 0 win over the Peoria Chiefs yesterday to move the Caps to 21 - 12 and into 2nd place in the MWL East. The Caps are in Burlington, IA to face the Bees, the"A" level affiliate of the Angels, @ 7:30 p.m.

I'll be off the blogosphere for a few days, but stay tuned for better sports news in the future, I hope. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:30 a.m. in "The City."

Let's go for that KISS thing again.

We have a current temperature of either 47° or 50° under mostly cloudy skies, depending on the source. Today's high has only one source for the forecast, the NWS in GR and they are forecasting a high of 67° under partly cloudy skies. The sun will rise @ 6:26 a.m. and set @ 8:56 p.m.

The Cubs split a pair with the Rockies yesterday with Jake Arrieta taking the loss in the first game by a score of 4 - 10. In the second game, John Lackey got the win with a score of 8 - 1. Those two results find the Cubs still in 3rd place in the NL Central with an overall record of 17 - 16. Today's game in Colorado will begin @ 3:10 p.m.

The Tigers are now in 3rd place too, with an overall record of 16 - 15 in the AL Central, following their win over the AZ D'backs by a score of 7 - 3. They play the D'backs again tonight @ 9:40 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox once again were victimized by the Brewers with a final score of 7 - 11 in an interleague game. That loss finds the Sox still in 3rd place in the AL East with an overall record of 17 - 15. They play the Brew Crew again tonight @ 8:10 p.m.

The Caps loss to the Peoria Chiefs by a score of 1 - 3, moves the Caps down to 3rd place in the MWL East with an overall record of 20 - 12. They Caps play in Peoria again today @ 12:00 p.m.

We collectively finished the index yesterday and sent it on its way, early.

Trainspotting for GTTSD and myself yesterday was interesting. At 11:48 a.m., EMD GP 38-2 locomotive #2019 was soloing in its usual MMRR livery heading south, towing 12 CHCs, one DWTC with a green stripe around its mid-section, one GTC, and one DBTC. The same locomotive returned @ 5:08 p.m. and GTTSD and I were here to see it towing 10 DBTCs, 13 CHCs, three GTCs, and on DWTC.

Speaking of Ginger, she was groomed yesterday and looks adorable. She was probably upset that her visit to the daycare center was altered by the grooming experience. I also took her out @ 3:30 a.m. this morning since both she and I were up and about.

Our new window blinds arrived yesterday and were installed. They look terrific with the exception that the one in the kitchen window requires a slight addition/modification to the light fixture over the sink to allow for clearance. We picked up the necessary parts to make that happen at the big-box home center late yesterday afternoon.

Today is the preparation day for our upcoming travels. Mary will be plotting our various routes and stops and I'll be doing some indoor chores and some outdoor planting. I think in this case I got the better part of the deal.

We have to pack for our impending departure and be sure that we have everything that we need to make our trip rewarding and successful. No matter what, it is likely that we'll forget something.  Ciao.

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:00 a.m. in "The City."

I was just outside with Ginger and the weather is as described by the meteorologists @ the NWS in GR,. 35° and partly cloudy. Later today, the high is forecast to reach 56° under mostly cloudy skies, but tomorrow, the high is forecast to reach 62° and we need never look back. The sun will rise today @ 6:27 a.m. and set @ 8:55 p.m. There is a freeze warning again this morning, exactly like the one that caused the local fruit farmers to employ the various methods they have to ward off the frost from the buds on the trees.

Let's keep it simple from here.

The Cubs did not play in Colorado against the Rockies last night due to weather. They are still scheduled to play today @ 2:10 p.m. Both the Tigers and my beloved Red Sox had the day off on Monday but they play tonight @ 9:40 and 7:40 pm. respectively in AZ and Milwaukee.

The Caps won their game against the Peoria Chiefs, 7 - 2. That win still finds the Caps in 2nd place in the MWL East with a record of 20 - 11, one game behind the Dayton Dragons.

I did my indoor chores and played with the girls for a short time. I finished my latest book, but I am slightly disappointed with the way it ended, with a whimper rather than a bang.

Mary finished most of the indexing and I edited most of it too. She will be putting the finishing touches on it today and I'll do the final edit.

Ginger will be going to the groomer today for a tune-up prior to our traveling later this week.

Otherwise, not much is scheduled for the day and that's fine with me. Ciao.

Monday, May 8, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City."

In the words, as attributed to Bartlett's Quotations, of the immortal Joe Jacobs, "I should of stood in bed." He reportedly uttered those words in October 1935 when he purportedly left his sick bed to attend the World Series game between the Chicago Cubs, on whom he had bet, and the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers reportedly won that game causing Jacobs to make his utterance. He is also credited with saying, "We wuz robbed!" in reference to the loss of his prize-fighter, Max Schmeling, when he lost to prize-fighter Jack Sharkey.  Many different pundits have chimed in to say that Jacobs was not the first to say "I should of stood in bed" or "We wuz robbed!." Does it matter? I dunno, becuz at this hour, I have no way nor desire to get into this debate any deeper.

But, as I often do, I digress. I drifted in and out of sleep, only to hear various stages of the game between the NL Central 16 - 15 Chicago Cubs and the 20 - 9 AL East NY Yankees. That loss @ about 2:30 a.m. EDT or 1:30 a.m. CDT moved the Cubs down to 3rd place and the Yankees stayed in 1st place in the AL East. The Cubs travel to Coors Field in Denver tonight to face the Rockies @ 8:40 p.m.

The Tigers are still mired in 4th place in the AL Central @ 15 - 15 following their 6 - 8 loss to the "As" in Oakland yesterday, The Tigers are off until tomorrow when they meet the AZ D'Backs @ 9:40 p.m. as the Tigers make their way home to Detroit.

My beloved Red Sox soundly defeated the Twins by a score of 17 - 6. Unfortunately, the Sox with their AL East record of 17 - 14, are still mired in 3rd place behind the 20 - 9 Yankees and the 20 - 10 Orioles. The Sox also have the day off as they travel to Milwaukee to face the Brewers n Tuesday night @ 7:40 p.m.

The Caps are doing great! They defeated the Kane, County Cougars yesterday by a score of 2 - 0. That gives the Caps a record of 19 - 11 in the MWL East, good enough for a 2nd place berth just behind Mary's sentimental favorites, the Dayton Dragons. The Caps travel to Peoria, IL for tonight's game against the Peoria Chiefs. The Chiefs used to be an "A" level affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, but they are now an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Chiefs are the 6th place team in the MWL West division with a record of 11 - 16.

Mary helped us redeem ourselves with a terrific dinner of linguini with red sauce last night. She had more time to simmer the sauce and make it the way that she likes and can. My contribution was drinking red wine and staying out of the way while reading. I like to think that I also contributed a measure of moral support.

Mary had grown weak of mind and eye while trying to finish the index, so she decided that cooking was a better choice than making errors that would take an hour to correct today, thus wasting time. I know how she felt. I've been down that road a few time myself. I believe that this was one of those times where that old saying "The hurrier I go, the more behind I get" comes into play.

While she was indexing, I was out in the back-forty filling and placing the freshly painted pots for our veggies. Mary directed their placement and I supplied the effort. In this case, I think we divided the labors correctly. Once I was done in the gardens, I spent time reading my book and playing with the girls.

Today, Mary will try to finish the index, a representative will be over to measure the PE and give us an accurate quote on replacing the carpeting located herein. I'm prepared so I won't have to be sitting down. I'll be doing indoor chores and reading when not otherwise occupied with being retired.

The current temperature is 35° under clear skies. The NWS forecast for freezing temperatures that required the tender young plants to be placed in a protective place was not necessary here on the shores of the "Big Lake." Still, we put our more vulnerable plants into the relatively warmer climate in our cold frame. With the tight seal and the glass-paned top, the temperature in there is probably 20° warmer. I was out with the fur-children around 3:00 a.m. and there was no frost in sight. Plus, early Monday morning in GH is very quiet and when the skies are clear, the various constellations and planets are easy to see.

Ths sun will rise today @ 6:28 a.m. and set later tonight @ 8:54 p.m. Ciao.

Sunday, May 7, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:30 a.m. in "The City."

It's not often that Mary has a kitchen failure, but when she does, I sometimes have a hand in it. In this case, her failure was our Saturday night dinner, pizza, as pictured below.

While the picture shows an appetizing pizza, the reality was less than we'd hoped. All the ingredients were there, her execution was solid, but the pizza? Oops! The vegan pepperoni that she made previously was fine. The red peppers, fine. But it went downhill from there. Her usual sauce was only so-so, The crust, well let's just say that's where my part of the failure came in.

In the early evening, we made a run to the big-box everything store for some groceries and sundries. But before we left, Mary asked me to make the dough for the pizza. I did, but since we had so much whole wheat flour, at Mary's suggestion, I used that without any all-purpose or bread flour. My only defense? Mary said I should use the whole wheat flour and follow the recipe that is in her Veganize It! cookbook. I did, but that's where the downhill run began. The rise of the dough was off. The stretching of the dough was off. The taste? Well, let's just say that cardboard is/would be more appetizing. In addition, Mary's usual tasty pizza sauce was bland. There was not enough hot sauce nor other spices that could/would have made it better. Oh well, live and learn.

Earlier in the day, for lunch, also at Mary's suggestion, I made cucumber salad to go with sandwiches that were made from Mary's vegan extraordinary beest. Both the salad and the sandwiches were very good.

After our tasty lunch, Mary went back to work on her index and I adjourned to the great outdoors to put the final coat of paint on our vegetable pots. I think they turned out great. The colors were Mary's idea, and in this case, her choices were excellent. Here is a picture of them, one in each of the six colors she chose. I'll fill them later today and then hold off the transplantation of the veggies into them until Tuesday when the NWS is forecasting temperatures that are not below freezing. Right now, the veggies are in the cold frame in the back forty.

But enough about failure. With the pots ready, I'll be able to transplant the tomatoes and peppers on Tuesday. We have a good supply of Dairy Doo™ and soil, so the actual potting should go well. In addition, I successfully replaced the broken glass in the top of the cold frame too. Mary made solid progress on the index, so that's all good.

Sports news was interesting. Prior to the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby, Mary and I made our choices for which horse would win. I chose a horse named Irish War Cry and Mary chose Always Dreaming. Her horse won the race and mine, while an early pre-race favorite, must still be out there running in the mud.

The news in baseball was only slightly better for me. The Cubs were solidly drubbed by the Yankees by a final score of 6 - 11. The score is not indicative of how bad it really was. The loss leaves the Cubs in a tie for 1st place in the NL Central with the Brewers @ 16 - 14. The Cubs play on national TV tonight @ 8:05 p.m.

The Tigers also snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a loss to the Oakland Athletics, 5 - 6 to keep them solidly in 4th place in the AL Central with a record of 15 - 14. They play the Athletics again this afternoon @ 4:05 p.m.

In better news, my beloved Red Sox hammered the Minnesota Twins 11 - 1 to stay solidly in 3rd place in the AL East, also @ 16 - 14, well behind the surging Yankees with their record of 19 - 9. The Sox play the Twins again today 2:10 p.m.

The Caps eked out a win over the Kane County Cougars, 1 - 0, on Girl Scout Night @ the Fifth/Third Ballpark. The win finds them in 3rd place behind the South Bend Cubs and the Dayton Dragons in the MWL East division with a record of 18 - 11. The Caps and the Cougars play this afternoon @ 1:00 p.m.

We did watch a movie on The Hallmark Channel last evening that was thoroughly enjoyable before I came up to bed and Mary watched C-Span. I listened to the end of the Cubs game and the start of the Tigers game before I drifted off.

Today, I plan to do as little as possible except for playing with the girls. I should also start reading my latest book which I have been carrying around for several days. I just seem to have too many other distractions. Mary will continue indexing, hoping to achieve a completed index later today. She will still have some final editing to do, as will I, but that should give her/us enough time before we travel later this week.

The current temperature is 42° under clear skies. With the wind, it feels like 37°. Today's high is forecast by the NWS to be 48° under sunny skies, but the overnight low will be 32°! We should see the lower 60s by Wednesday. The cold temperatures should finally be over after that.

The sun will rise today @ 6:30 a.m. and set later tonight @ 8:53 p.m. In between, we'll take the morning safari with the fur-children. Ciao.

Friday, May 5, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:00 a.m. in "The City."

It looks as though Yarn Quest 2017 is over. We made what are likely to be our last two stops yesterday. The first was @ The New Ewe in Newaygo, MI, where we also ate lunch across the street @ The Sportsman's Bar and Grill. Lunch was a bean burrito which turned out to be very filling.
We would have eaten in Rockford after our stop in Newaygo, but we were too far from Rockford and too hungry to wait. Our dinner was Sloppy Joe's and Tater Tots™ with an additional side of Coleslaw @ home.

The stop @ The Sportsman's Bar and Grill allowed us to continue the quest to Rockford, MI, and J.T. Stitchery, Both places were able to add to Mary's stash and the ride in the wilds of Western, MI was a great diversion from the daily activities of life.

I say it looks as though Yarn Quest 2017 is over because of the 11 possible stops on our grand tour, the only one left to visit is Stitching Memories in Portage, MI. Sadly, Portage is about 65 miles south and east of here and would require a round trip of nearly four hours. Too much time, too little desire.

So, unless Mary sleeps on it and decides we are going to Portage, she'll be turning in her Yarn Quest 2017 Passport @ The Needlesmith, our local participant in the quest, which is just around the corner from the PE. Oh well, there is always next year. However, the 10 stops we did make qualified Mary for the second place prize.

As proof of participation, each shop stamped Mary's passport with a stamp for their shop. Here are some pictures of the nearly completed passport along with the purchases made in the two stops we made.

This picture shows the stamps for the stops we made and our purchases.

This picture shows the one missing stamp and also the purchases.
It is worthy of note that we had walked the fur-children over to Ginger's Daycare spot where we dropped off Ginger and returned home with STWD. While we were on our return trip, we stopped @ the Bookman where Sugar got her biscuit and Mary got a tote bag that has the names of 15 independent bookstores on one side and their locations on the other.

We have one "X" for the Bookman.

This side shows the locations of all of the participating bookstores on a map of Michigan.
I did get to witness the southbound passage of the train on the RSTL yesterday morning. Locomotives 2057 and 2019 were rolling south towing five CHCs, four DWTCs, and 11 DBTCs.  we were traveling when the afternoon passage happened.

Sports news yesterday was mostly good. The Cubs came from behind when they bailed out John Lackey and defeated the Phillies yesterday afternoon by a score of 5 - 4. That took 13 innings. That win gives the Cubs a one and one-half game lead over the 2nd place Brewers in the NL Central with a record of 16 - 12. The Cubs host the Yankees this afternoon @ 1:20 p.m.

The Tigers game was postponed due to weather. That means that the Tigers are still in 4th place with a 14 - 13 record in the AL Central. The Tigers flew to Oakland to face the As @ 10:05 tonight.

My beloved Red Sox took it on the chin in a game against the Orioles by a score of 3 - 8. That loss finds the Sox in 3rd place with a record of 15 - 13 in the AL East. The Sox travel to MN for a game tonight against the Twins @ 8:10 p.m.

The Caps fared better yesterday with a 9 - 3 win over the Clinton, IA, Lumberkings. That victory ties the Caps for 1st place with the Dayton Dragons who also have an MWL East record of 17 - 10. The Caps host the Kane, County, Cougars, the current 1st place team in the MWL West @ 7:00 p.m. FYI, the Dayton Dragons are the "A" level affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, the Caps are the "A" level affiliate of the Tigers, and the Cougars are the "A" level affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

We have a current temperature of 47° under partly cloudy skies. Today's high is forecast by the NWS to reach 60° under mostly sunny skies. The sun will rise @ 6:32 a.m. and set @ 8:50 p.m.

Today, after the morning safari, Mary has to get back to indexing so that she is done before we travel. She is making progress, but it is slow going. I'll be reading, playing with the girls and little else. I do have to put a coat of paint on our vegetable pots. With the warm temperatures expected today this should be a good opportunity. That base coat of latex paint will allow me to add a finish color coat to each pot tomorrow. Ciao.

Wednesday, May 3, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:00 a.m. in "The City."

I did it, I made another Pi for our History Book Club meeting later today. This one is a blueberry Pi that I/we won't taste until the meeting this afternoon. That's okay, I just know it will be good. Better ingredients and good effort equal great Pi!

We have a current temperature of 42° under mostly cloudy skies. It seems like the sun has been coming and going for several days. However, with the current view out the WW being dark with a side of darker, there is no way to tell whether the forecast for later today of mostly sunny with a high temperature of 55° is real. The sun will rise today at 6:35 a.m. and set @ 8:48 p.m.

Sports news yesterday/last night was mostly good. The Cubs outhit the Phillies and that resulted in an 8 - 3 victory to move the Cubs into sole possession of 1st place in the NL Central, one full game ahead of the Brewers with a record of 14 - 12. The Cubs and the Phillies play again tonight @ 7:05 p.m.

The Tigers were also winners in their game against the Indians, 5 - 2. That still finds the Tigers in 4th place in the AL Central, also with a record of 14 - 12, The Tigers and the Indians play tonight @ 7:10 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox defeated the Orioles by a score of 5 - 2. The win gives the Sox an AL East record of, yes, 14 - 12 which is only good enough for 3rd place. The Sox and the Orioles play tonight @7:10 p.m.

Sadly the only loss yesterday was the Caps as they fell to the Clinton, IA Lumberkings by a score of 4 - 5 in the MWL East. That loss dropped them into a 2nd place tie with the South Bend Cubs with identical records of 15 - 10. The Dayton Dragons lead the league with their record of 16 - 9. The Caps and the Lumberkings play tonight @ 6:35 p.m. We're still waiting for the warmer weather for our first game of the season @ the Fifth/Third Ballpark.

The trains were on the tracks on their new Tuesday/Thursday schedule yesterday. At 9:55 a.m., locomotives 2019 and 2057 rolled through heading south pulling 16 CHCs, and one DBTC @ the end. Later, after we had finished casting our votes for the successful millage for the Grand Haven Area Public Schools, I watched as the same tandem of locomotives pass by heading north pulling 12 DBTs eight CHCs, and three DWTCs.

Along with voting, we completed several errands yesterday afternoon and then picked up Ginger from daycare before heading home. I watched some news, Mary surfed the web, and then we settled in to watch NCIS.

After our book club, I plan to settle in for some time with the girls and then later tonight I'll watch the latest episode of my new favorite TV show, Designated Survivor. Mary tells me that she has a tough time following it.

Otherwise, not much will be happening and that's fine with me. Ciao.

Tuesday, May 2, 2017

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in"The City."

We took Ginger to doggie daycare yesterday as we set out on the most recent leg of Yarn Quest 2017 to Henny's Yarn Shop in Caledonia, MI. It is a nice little shop on Main St., yes, the main street in Caledonia, MI is indeed named Main St., like over 3,100 other towns and cities in the US.

But I digress. We go there only once per year for Yarn Quest because the distance is over 50 miles and it takes anywhere from one hour 15 minutes to one hour 30 minutes to get there. Plus, if you don't follow the route prescribed by the GPS system in your car, you have to travel through some heavy city traffic instead of the more idyllic country lanes that we took on our trip home. Oh well, maybe next year.

The weather was mostly nice with only occasional drops of rain hitting the windscreen. We dodged the storms that came later in the day.

Speaking of the weather conditions, it is dry right now with a current temperature of 44° per both the NWS and my own DTWS with its FPMS. Later today, the high temperature is forecast to reach 47° with a 60% chance of rain and winds of 20 mph. The long-range 10-day forecast indicates that it will be cool here in West MI for another week or more before the forecast calls for 70° temperatures two weeks from today. The cool temperatures will slow the development of my garden plantings until then.

Sports news yesterday was once again mixed. The Cubs took it on the chin from the visiting Phillies by a final score of 2 - 10. By late in the game, manager Joe Maddon had pulled regular first baseman Anthony Rizzo and regular third baseman Kris Bryant and had backup catcher Miguel Montero play first base, regular catcher Wilson Contreras play second, and generally regular left-fielder Kyle Schwarber move to catcher. Schwarber was drafted by the Cubs as a catcher, but due to his knee injury last year, he has not taken many turns behind the dish. Maddon wants to keep him comfortable there, so hence the turn. The loss leaves the Cubs in a statistical tie for 1st place in the NL Central with the Milwaukee Brewers. Next game for the Cubs is tonight @ Wrigley Field against the Phillies @ 8:05 p.m.

The Tigers fared better against the Indians with a 7 - 1 victory to also move them to 13 - 12 in the AL Central. However, in their case, that's only good enough for 4th place. The Tigers once again play the Indians tonight @ Comerica park @ 7:10 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox dropped another game to the AL East-leading Orioles by a final score of 2 - 5. That also gives the Sox a record of 13 - 12, in their case in the AL East, but good enough for 3rd place. They once again play the Orioles @ Fenway Park tonight @ 7:10 p.m.

The Caps take the home-field again tonight after a day off. Their opponent will be the Clinton, IA Lumberkings @ 6:35 p.m. The Caps have an MWL East record of 15 - 9. tied with Mary's sentimental favorites, the Dayton, OH Dragons.

Otherwise, we made that trip to Caledonia and I got my few hairs cut, read more and Mary indexed more along with cooking lunch and dinner. I liked her dinner pizza of homemade dough, onions, and vegan vegeroni on homemade sauce.  The fur-children slept more when they weren't eating or going for a short walk.

Today, I'll continue reading and Mary will continue indexing. The sun will rise today into cloudy skies @ 6:36 a.m. and set @ 8:47 p.m. Ciao.
