Good evening GH. Brrrrrr! It's cold out there at just past 10:00 p.m. It's 20°, but it feels like 6°. Our low tonight is supposed to be 15°, so what happens when we get down to that temperature? Oh well, we did our shopping earlier today, and that means that the only time I have to go out tomorrow is to walk with Sugar the Weather Dog. We did that this morning, and it was cold even then. Tomorrow, we are supposed to get to 24° and by Friday, 29° under partly cloudy skies. Today's snow, a non starter.

I did get in some time with the girls today and that's always a good thing. I read the newspaper, watched a few car shows and perused the internet. In short, I didn't accomplish much.

Mary is feeling a little under the weather, so I was mostly on my own for meals. She did microwave some of my homemade soup, and whip up a sandwich, but that's about the extent of her kitchen activities. I left the dishes for her, because she likes to futz there. Fine with me. I got the hard part, walking in the cold with the intrepid weather dog. As long as the sidewalks are ice free, that's okay with me. I can always put on my hat and gloves along with a scarf and a warm coat and I'm set to go. However, even Sugar wasn't wanting to stay out all that long today.

The southbound train passed by about 9:25 p.m. The regular contingent of locomotives followed by two box cars, three covered hopper cars, and seven of those dreaded black tank cars interspersed with some white and gray and white tank cars.

Tomorrow, I'll start on a pulp fiction novel I picked up at the library earlier. It's one of those books that I can snap off in about two to four hours. I like them that way. Of course, I'll have to read the newspaper that Sugar and I will pick up and do the crossword too. Walking with Sugar and picking up the newspaper will be the extent of my outdoor activities.

It is not all that likely that Mary and I will be awake to greet the new year. However, we have a tradition of celebrating the new year when it happens in London, England, about seven hours earlier than here

The sun will rise at 8:15 a.m. and set at 5:17 P.M. on New Year's Eve. Ciao.
It was a dark, but not a stormy night at just past 4:30 a.m. in "The City." However, it is cold out there, to paraphrase that old song, and there is a 40% potential for snow in the not too distant future. If the forecast is right, it will be less than one inch. Just enough to make things slippery. Plus, there will be wind blowing at 10 - 20 mph. Sugar the Weather Dog and I will will just have to soldier on. We have an appointment for the intrepid one on Friday morning, and an appointment to have the car serviced in Holland in the afternoon of that same day, so we'll be watching the forecasts closely.

GR is reporting that they had record breaking snowfall last year, and this year over the same period, it is likely that they will set another record, this time for the least amount of snowfall. I know it is just weather, but something weird is going on here. Record cold, record snowfall, record warmth seem to be becoming the norm. Go figure.

Mary and I finished the indexing project yesterday afternoon. Then it was time for our victory dinner at the favorite watering hole. Since this is the second of two holiday weeks, there was a larger than usual crowd for a Monday afternoon. Next week, we'll become a sleepy little city for a few months.

Otherwise, not much was happening yesterday. Sugar and I took our regular walk in the morning, during which we met one of her favorite people. This lady works delivering the Grand Haven Tribune to various places in and around GH. To Sugar, she is the lady who deliver biscuits to Sugar. We crossed the lady's path twice, and Sugar would have gladly gone home with her if it meant getting more biscuits. Pavlov was right. As it was, Sugar received three biscuit treats and was overjoyed.

Earlier this morning, the first train that I have noticed rumbled past the palatial estate at 1:37 a.m. heading south. It took several minutes and the house shook on its foundation, so I know that it was long and heavily laden. But that is a somewhat anecdotal observation based on hearing only. It was not a visual sighting. I have not yet experienced the northbound run.

Today, I have time to play with the girls. I'll also have time to read the newspaper and do the crossword. I may also have time to read my latest book, as my boss says I can have the day off.

The sun will rise in a few hours a 8:15 a.m., and set later today at 5:17 p.m. Yes Virginia, the days are getting longer once again. Spring is not far away. Ciao.

Sunday, December 28, 2014

Good morning GH. At just past 7:30 a.m. in "The City", our current temperature is 32°, although due to the wind, it feels like 23°. Tomorrow, our high is not expected to get past 28° and on Tuesday, we'll peak at 23°. Each day has a prediction for a 40% chance of precipitation and partly cloudy skies. We have been enjoying the relatively balmy temperatures in the upper thirties and lower forties. I guess that the real winter has finally arrived.

Yesterday, after Mary suggested that we get going on the morning walk early, to avoid the predicted rain. It was very windy and foggy as we walked. Sugar was happily sniffing every blade of grass, shrub, and pole in our fair city. When we got back, Mary crafted lunch and then I got to work. I finished that project for Mary. It was tough sledding, to borrow a winter analogy. Today I'll have to help with the final output. In addition, I finished my latest book and now I have another to read before it has to go back to the library. Otherwise, I did as little as possible.

In the evening, we played two rousing games of Scrabble™, which Mary won. She can be ruthless. I know, we sure know how to party. Staying in out of the weather when you can is preferable when you get older. Snow sports and ice are for the younger people. Wow, for a second there I sounded like my parents.

Today, I'll start out with a morning walk with Sugar the Weather Dog. Since the temperature has dropped, it will be a bit abbreviated. Since we don't need to go to the newspaper box, we can go in any direction that Sugar chooses. I let her take the lead, as she has a "Nose" for adventure. Mostly, I am along for the ride.

Once we are back, I'll help Mary when necessary and read when I can. Sugar will sleep on her couch. In between, I may get in some time with the girls. That looks like a full day to me.

The sun will rise at 8:16 a.m. and set at 5:17 p.m. Now that we are past the shortest day of the year, spring, which occurs on February 20, 2015, at least by the schedule posted for my beloved Red Sox pitchers and catchers to report, is almost here. The position players report on February 24, 2015. The first full workout is scheduled for February 25th. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel from the dugout to the field. Ciao.

Saturday, December 27, 2014

Good morning GH. It is just past 7:30 a.m. in "The City." Our current temperature of 45° is as high as we will get today. Plus, we will have light rain beginning this morning after 8:00 a.m. Right now, there is no precipitation visible outside the Weather Window.

Yesterday was a good day. I finished part of the crossword that Sugar the Weather Dog, Mary, and I picked up during our morning sojourn. Sugar and I had to detour away from downtown GH, because there were too many people and other dogs on Washington. She and I met Mary at the back entrance to the bread store, having already stopped to pick up the newspaper. We'll repeat the  above procedure again today, sans the bread pick up.

Mary and I both worked upstairs yesterday after the laundry was done. I am making progress, and working upstairs has made the process go more smoothly, with ready access to Mary's guidance. Still, to paraphrase the late, great, Minnie Pearl, it is a booger. We did go out for a light dinner and a stop at the Post.

I hope to finish the work this morning and then get it to Mary for her final polishing. Then, we are free for another day or so. I still want to go to the movies, but I can just as easily stay home. That's always the easiest, and a weekend is not the best time to go to a theater, especially post holiday and during the kid's winter break. I may just peruse the weekend Grand Haven Tribune, do the crossword, and then read my latest book to the end. I have another on the shelf that is awaiting my attention.

Other than that, I have no plans. I'll be sure to watch the sun rise at 8:15 a.m. and the sunset at 5:15 p.m., and then call it a day. Somewhere in between, I'll be assisting Mary in her efforts. Ciao.

Friday, December 26, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever  you may be. It is just past 2:30 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature of 39° will steadily climb to today's high of 41° under mostly cloudy skies. Saturday, we'll add a 60% chance of rain to that forecast. Sunday, mostly cloudy skies and high of 35° look to be the expectations.

Christmas day was a relaxing time for all. I gave Mary our latest activity for the close of this year and all of 2015. I read somewhere about an activity that suggests that a person write a daily "Why I'm thankful" idea onto a small slip of paper which you then place  into a jar each day That's a good way to remind oneself  that we all have a things about which we should be thankful in our lives each day. Will it work? I don't know, but we are going to try it. From Mary, I got a card that reminds me how lucky I am each day. All good as far as I am concerned.

Later after Mary, Sugar the Weather Dog, and I took our morning walk, we returned for breakfast. Then I worked on that project for Mary for a while. I stopped when the project got to the most difficult part. I'll pick it up again today. I then sat down to read my book and await Christmas dinner.

In spite of her protestations to the contrary, I liked Mary's efforts. Biscuits, gravy, and a small loaf that I really like, were paired with a mixture of winter squash and carrots. They were delightful. In addition, I got one of my favorite side dishes, jellied cranberry sauce. Plus, there was eggnog with rum for me. I say for me, because Mary can take or leave eggnog.

After dinner, we sat down to watch Love Actually, one of our favorite holiday movies. That was followed by a sitcom and the drama, Elementary, to top off the evening. We'd never seen either. Naturally, I was ready for bed after that great dinner, the rum laced eggnog, and the movie and TV viewing, so that's where I headed. Mary stayed up to do some knitting on her afghan.

Today, I'll get back to that project after I take the morning walk with the intrepid weather dog to pick up the newspaper. Since the weather is supposed to be warm enough, I anticipate that Mary will accompany us. We did well yesterday, but after about 3/4 of a mile, we headed home due to a fierce headwind. We may face similar windy conditions today. If so, today's walk may also be limited.

I'll settle down to work while I do some laundry after we get home. Mary will continue to work in her office. After the laundry is done, I may transfer my efforts to my office desk, so that I am close to Mary's work space as I work. That would be more convenient for both of us. But as lazy as I am, I may just stay put downstairs.

The sun will rise, and then set at 8:13 a.m. and 5:13 p.m. respectively. Ciao.

Thursday, December 25, 2014

Happy holidays to all and to all a wish that your wishes will come true this holiday season. No need to say anything else. Today, I am thankful that I have the ability to write my blog each morning.

We have a current temperature of 37° under dark skies. Today a peak temperature of 37° with a 40% chance of additional precipitation under cloudy skies is the forecast. Tomorrow, 41° with more sun. Saturday, about the same.

The sun will rise in a few hours at 8:15 a.m., and set later at 5:15 p.m. Sugar the Weather Dog and I will go for a morning walk after that. I expect that Mary may accompany us, as she is eager to try out her new pedometer. While not exactly a present, it is something she has talked about for awhile.

I made it to the doctor's office yesterday and the report was that there is nothing to report. I am in excellent shape for a man of my age. Like Adam and Mary almost always say, enjoy. It's time to get busy living.

Otherwise, I have to keep up my work for Mary. It is a tough job. Well not tough really, but exacting. I'm getting better at it, but it is not the same as what I usually do. In many ways, this is a good example of why I am not an indexer.

Elsewhere in my day, I read more of my novel, which feels both familiar and new. Go figure. I played with the girls and downloaded and transcribed some additional music. I've got to stop, as my book is getting too full.

No planes, trains, nor automobiles in my day today. Walking is just fine on a day such as this. Like the porridge of Goldilocks and the Three Bears fame, it should be just right. I'm good with that.

I have a small activity that I want to try out this year and next. I'll explain more tomorrow, but more importantly, I need to explain it to Mary. I think it s a good one, but we have trouble doing our daily inspirational reading, so who knows.

It is just past 3:30 a.m. Ciao.

Wednesday, December 24, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City", where the current temperature is 37°F with light rain falling. That rain is forecast to continue at a  90% clip throughout the day. We will peak at 39°. Christmas looks about the same, with a slightly less chance of precipitation. All in all, I'd rather not be in Buffalo, or for that matter most points north and east. Chicago may see some snow accumulation today, and we may too, given the accuracy of the local forecasts.

Not much was happening Tuesday. Mary, Sugar the Weather Dog, and I walked downtown to get the newspaper and then we all returned for a relaxing day. I relaxed, and the intrepid weather dog relaxed, but Mary went back to work after brunch. Along the way, we met the nice lady who delivers the Grand Haven Tribune and naturally, Sugar recognized her car. That netted Sugar a biscuit and she even gave a kiss to the lady. For Sugar that is a departure from her usual demeanor. Unfortunately, every car that resembles the car that that lady drives, gets Sugar's attention and that makes the walk home interesting.

Later in the day, Mary and I walked downtown to get Sugar her annual holiday gift. We chose a "Good Dog" baked bone at the "Must Love Dogs" store on Washington. While not always good, Sugar is always loved and she loves us. That stop led us to the Post for a pre-holiday libation and conversation.

At home, I wanted a Jet's Six Corner™ onion pizza for dinner, so that's what was delivered about 30 minutes later. Of course, that pizza is good for two meals, so it will be reappear again later today. Strangely, I got tired, moved to the media room, and then I crashed.

Today, I have a doctor's visit first thing this morning for some routine concerns, and then my day will be spent assisting Mary, reading the newspaper, more crossword puzzle solving, and more novel reading. It should be a good day. Sugar will provide her able assistance from her post on the couch. When the deliveries arrive, she'll let us know.

The sun will rise later this morning at 8:14 a.m., and set exactly nine hours later at 5:14 p.m. Ciao.

Tuesday, December 23, 2014

Good morning GH. Once again, it is past 2:00 a.m. in "The City." I wish that I slept through the night, but when you fall asleep in the media room, you tend to wake up in the wee hours. Oh well, I don't have to get up early later this morning. Our current temperature is 36°, but it feels like 27° with a 14 mph wind and light rain falling outside the Weather Window. Our high today will be 44° with a 90% chance of the rain continuing throughout the day. Wednesday, the temperature will be no higher than 39° with the rain staying with us.

I heard the southbound train go by about one hour ago. That's all I have to say about that.

I read more of my novel after Mary and I walked with Sugar the Weather Dog to get the newspaper and enjoy the outdoors. We made it to First St. and then turned south, reached the main street in GH, and then walked back on Washington. Naturally, this being the shopping season, the city was filled with people at 10: 00 a.m.

After last year's snowfall, the lack of snow this year is odd to behold. I'm not complaining mind you, but Dewey Hill is devoid of the white stuff. We returned and Mary got back to work. I did the laundry along with the cover for Sugar's couch. Once again, I pulled an extra dog from the lint trap of the dryer.

Speaking of Sugar, I now know that all I have to do is crush her medication and she scarfs it down. She has no way to avoid the needed pills that way.

Mary and I foolishly journeyed to the mall area in Muskegon yesterday afternoon. We had vowed to not make that mistake again, but we did. We came away mostly unrequited. Oh well, everything we desired will wait until after the new year.

We did stop by the favorite watering hole on our way back, and that was a pleasant experience mid-afternoon. Not too many people and sports on TV. Then it was home fora movie in the media room where I fell asleep. One of these days, I'll see a whole movie.

Today, not much on the agenda. A walk with Sugar, read the newspaper, do the crossword, and some time with the girls before I settle in with my novel. I guess that meals are in there somewhere too. The sun will rise at 8:13 a.m. and set at 5:11 p.m. Ciao.

Monday, December 22, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is nearly 4:00 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature of 33° is the lowest that it will get. Yet, the National Weather Service on another site shows the temperature as 31°. I just know that it is cold outside the Weather Window. With only a slight wind blowing, the temperature feels like 26°. Today, rain at 80% is the prediction, accompanied by a high of 39°. Tomorrow is much the same, as is Wednesday.

I did see the train go by as I was reading in the living room last night. One locomotive and six cars of mixed use. I didn't see or hear the northbound run. But, that may not have happened, yet.

In spite of my original intentions, I did get in some time with the girls. I was sounding good as I tried to keep the volume down as Mary was working.

Earlier I went to the man-cave to accomplish those tasks I had set out for myself, but the major one was deterred by the overwhelming complexity of the electrical service in this old palatial estate. So as I told Mary, I know my limitations and I'll be plugging lights in to accomplish my goal. That means that I saved a lot of work and some money for the things I'll be returning to the big-box home center. That seems like a twofer to me. I did get my music stand repaired after its fatal fall on Saturday. I saved money with that repair, so maybe it was three for three.

We had a nice visit with the neighbors last evening. We were invited over for a gathering of the three families who occupy our little corner of the GH community and we had nice conversations, as we learned about the history of our homes, the purchase circumstances, and how each family makes use of their space. We probably have the most space with the least people per square footage.

Today, I'll be walking with Sugar the Weather Dog, although with that high percentage chance of rain, that may be a short walk. Then I or Mary and I, will be journeying to that big-box home center for that return. Then I hope to find a carpet sweeper at the local vacuum store or one of the big-box everything stores. With Sugar in shed mode, I need all the help I can get picking up her hair.

Speaking of Sugar, yesterday she was spooked by a large explosion outside the palatial estate and repaired to her upstairs hide-e-hole for safety. Once again, the idiot explosives aficionado was at play. In addition, I have had to resort to various subterfuges to get her to take her anti-shedding medication. So far, the best seems to be mixing the crushed pill with her food. She will take the  medication when covered with peanut butter, but otherwise she will work around the pill or spit it out. So much for dogs will like these pills. I got lucky one day and stuffed the pill in a banana, but she got wise to that trick and chewed the banana and spit out the pill the next time.

I'll read the newspaper that Sugar and I will pick up on our morning walk and then go back to my novel.

The sun will rise at 8:13 a.m. and set at 5:11 p.m. Mary will work as I wash Sugar's couch cover. Ciao.

Sunday, December 21, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:00 a.m. in "The City", where the current temperature is 31°, but it feels like 29°. We'll see a high later today, after the sun rises at 8:13 a.m., of 36° under partly cloudy skies. As the week unfolds, the temperatures will rise, but so will the chance of rain or rain/snow. Tuesday the forecast calls for a high of 44°, but there is also a forecast of a 70% chance of rain showers. That's okay with me, because I don't have to shovel rain.

Saturday was a great day. We made it to the eye doctor where Mary got good news. While her vision is not perfect, and that in itself isn't news, the other issue is resolving and that is good news. Mary got to tour the big house in downtown GH in the early afternoon, and she described it as incredible, huge, gorgeous, etc.

While she was at the open house, I was at the monthly Irish Jam session. We had a good time, and that's what matters. Mary came home from her tour, and continued her work. In addition, she found time to whip up a nice stir fry for lunch. We closed the day with a trip to the Post to see Sally and the regular cast of people. Everyone there is so friendly. We didn't stay for Karaoke, but that's because the weather was changing and we had to walk home. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Today, I plan to get to that work in the man-cave, or not. There is a crossword to be solved, a novel to be read, and football to watch, not to mention the morning walk with Sugar the Weather Dog. Mary will once again have to work.

Sometime in the afternoon, Sugar and I will settle in for a long winter's nap. I suppose that for Sugar, a nap isn't an unusual activity. I won't take time to play with the girls today, because I did that extended session on Saturday afternoon.

That looks like enough for one day's activities. The sun will set at 5:13 p.m. So I'll be saying Ciao, right after I mention, as the town crier in Bermuda used to say, in Bermuda, it's 2:00 a.m. in GH and all is well.

Saturday, December 20, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. At just a tad past 4:30 a.m., I should be in bed, and I will be soon. Actually, I'd have been there already, but I had to wait to recognize that the WiFi modem needed to be unplugged and rebooted. My bad I guess. Not so fast, the internet just blipped again, and that had nothing to do with me.

The sun will be rising at 8:12 a.m. today, and then we will have cloudy skies and temperatures that never get out of the mid thirty degree range. At least there won't be any precipitation.

We had a good day yesterday. I made a variation on my squash and kale soup that became squash and spinach soup, as those were the greens that we had in the freezer. By the time I was done, I had made about six or seven quarts of soup. We dropped off a jar of soup with Sally at the Post so that she could enjoy my efforts. We said we'd return, but we didn't' make it. Sometimes the best laid plans etc., etc.

We started out the morning walking with Sugar the Weather Dog to get the newspaper. We needed to hurry back for the chat session that Mary had at noon, but it turned out that her session isn't until 2:00 p.m. on Fridays. Oh well, that kept her out of the kitchen as I worked. She used her time well, and so each of us was productive.

I did get in some time with the girls, but my throat was a bit scratchy, so I had to stop. I suppose I could have kept playing, but I like to be able to sing along. Unlike some players, I view the guitar as an accompaniment instrument rather than as a solo instrument. My playing is getting better every day, but some days are better than others.

Today we have to go to the eye doctor in Spring Lake to get a recheck on Mary's eyes. She still has some concerns, but the problems are ebbing. I wouldn't have to go, but if the doctor needs to dilate her pupils, she can't drive home.

Later in the afternoon, I'm off to the Irish Jam session at the library. That's always fun, and should be good this close to the holidays. I like the experience of playing with other musicians who bring all sorts of instruments.

We may or may not make it to the Post for Karaoke Night. Much depends on how I feel after playing all afternoon.

That looks like enough for me. The sun will set at 5:12 p.m. and then the darkness will envelop GH like a blanket. We made it out last night to the favorite watering hole after stopping at the Post as I noted earlier. Then we came home instead of stopping back at the Post. So, that may dictate tonight's activities. Ciao.

Friday, December 19, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:30 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature outside the Weather Window of 27° will give way to an overnight low of 24°, although right now a light wind of 7 mph makes it feel like 19°. Later today, after the sun rises at 8:11 a.m., our high temperature will be 33° under sunny skies. Saturday will bring cloudy skies and a high temperature of 34°. According to the National Weather Service forecast, temperatures will continue to rise until Wednesday, with rainy conditions. Christmas Day will be colder with snow.

Thursday, Sugar the Weather Dog and I walked over to her doctor. She got her rabies shot, but we put off the distemper vaccination until January 2. The doctor agreed that Sugar was shedding a bit much, and in fact, the veterinary technician had on blue scrubs that soon became what Mary and I have often referred to as Sugar color. So, the doctor gave us some medication called Shed No More, that should put my fur baby on a more regular schedule of twice a year shedding. Otherwise, except for being two to four pounds over her ideal weight Sugar is fine, health wise.

Once Sugar and I were done, Mary came by to pick us up and I had Mary stop for a short visit to the local big-box home center, so I could run in and pick up a few things for the basement lights. When we got home, Mary made a salad for lunch and then went to work. I read the newspaper, and more of my novel, which I finished late last night. The ending surprised me, so that made for a good read. I also found time to play with the girls too. Sally stopped by to drop off some soup and chili she had made. Sally is a delightful friend that both Mary and I treasure.

Mary continued to work and she has more to do today. I just have to walk with the intrepid weather dog and pick up the newspaper. I may start another book, or I may work on the man cave lights.

I watched the heavily laden southbound train roll by at 9:56 p.m. last night. Twin locomotives towing 15 covered hopper cars. The sun will set tonight at 5:11 p.m. That's all I have to say about that. Ciao.

Thursday, December 18, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just before 3:00 a.m. in "The City", where the current temperature is 32°, but it feels like 24°. Actually, that's an improvement on earlier yesterday morning and last evening, when the wind was blowing so hard that Sugar the Weather Dog's ears were pinned back as she struggled to make her way as we walked west. On the way back, Sugar recognized the lady who drives the Jeep vehicle and delivers the newspaper,  and who also gives Sugar biscuit treats now and then. Pavlov was right.

Elsewhere in the world, I heard two trains, but didn't see them.

I didn't get to play with the girls because I was doing laundry. So I read the newspaper and my novel instead. I also worked the crossword puzzle.

We made it to the bank to pick up some quarters and to the post office to drop off a package. Then we stopped at the Post to see Sally.

Today is that walk with Sugar to her doctor. I can walk her over, but she may be a bit woozy for the walk back, so Mary will be picking us up. That's fine with me. Sugar would give it the old college try, but I worry too much about her to let her do that.

That looks like my day in a nutshell. Mary has work to do, and I have noting to do. I like it. However, Mary did print out her next project, so I may be peripherally involved in that today. That depends on whether Mary has to catch up on some other work she has to do. If she does, I'm safe.

The sun will still rise at 8:09 a.m. and set at  5::11 p.m. Ciao.

Wednesday, December 17, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature of 32° will give way to 29° as we near sunrise at 8:09 a.m. Today we are expecting showers early and then that will change to snow later in the day with a possible accumulation of one to three inches. A high temperature of 32° will also be the most we can expect. For those wishing for a snow covered holiday, they may get their wish. Thursday will bring similar conditions. Right now, the National Weather Service has predicted a high of 37° with sunny skies on Sunday.

We got out yesterday morning for a walk with Sugar the Weather Dog. A brisk walk downtown and then a return trip through the park made for a nice morning. Somehow, I bet that Mary will find something she needs to do this morning rather than go out in the storm. She may go, and I wouldn't blame her if she didn't, but that's often a game time call. I'd rather not go too, but Sugar can only be held in abeyance for so long.

I'm going to leave a note on Mary's office chair to remind her to make that dentist's appointment she had to cancel due to her workload. Maybe I'll even send her an email reminder too. There, I've done my part, I did both.

We got out yesterday and went to the Restore Store™ and found an ideal beginning for our cold frame. I have to remind Adam that if he'd like to assist, that we'll have to work in March, not the summer, as the point of a cold frame is starting vegetables for planting in spring. At the least, I'll have to borrow his circular saw.

Mary and I also made it to the big-box home center in Muskegon where I got that new pair of gloves I was seeking. We also picked up a huge bag of dog food for the fur babies at the Harbor Humane Society™. We'll drop that off at Sugar's doctor when we are there on Thursday morning. Sugar's doctor has made arrangements to be a collection point for the shelter. Mary and I decided that the fur babies needed our help more than we needed any holiday gifts.

I finally got my new lenses. Wow! I didn't know what I'd been missing. Things are so much clearer now. Then it was off to the grocery store in Spring Lake where I returned cans and got a surprise at checkout. Tuesdays are "Senior Day" at the grocery store and I was old enough to get one dollar off on our purchase. While not a huge amount, I'll always take a freebie.

We made it to the favorite watering hole and had dinner before coming home. We watched TV and then I went up to the media room. Soon it was time for bed, where I was until just recently.

Today, like yesterday, I'll get in some play time with the girls. Saturday is our next Irish Jam session. I'm working on an Irish holiday song for the occasion. We'll see how that goes.

A touch of the laundry and my day will be done. I have no desire to go out for an extended time. Plus, the low-slung weather dog comes back needing a wipe down to get the mud, ice, snow, sleet, rain, etc. off of her undercarriage and paws.

More newspaper, more crossword, and then the sun will set at at 5:11 p.m. Ciao.

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:00 a.m. in The City", where the current temperature is 46° as we slide towards the overnight low of 42°. A forecast from the National Weather Service indicates that light rain will happen shortly and extend into most of today. That's better than snow. Today we should see a high of 42° as the showers continue. By Wednesday, the temperature will fall back to 32°, so any precipitation will fall in the form of sleet or snow. I'm not prepared to have winter return. However, the chance of precipitation will be only 20% under cloudy skies. For the balance of the week, temperatures will be on the cool side, but ice and snow are unlikely.

Later today, we'll be going over to Spring Lake to get my new lenses. I finished my editing work earlier, as Mary and I finalized the index, but my eyes were hurting and so was my head. I've been down that road before, and I need it to change.

Today I hope to get some replacement gloves that keep my hands warm. Adam suggested that I get a new pair each year and not worry about getting the latest and greatest. So that's my plan. In addition, we need to get some children's Benadryl™ for Sugar the Weather Dog. She is due for her yearly and once every three year vaccinations on Thursday, and the last time she got so sick that I was very worried. This year, her doctor recommends that we give Sugar the correct dosage of children's Benadryl™ about 30 minutes before bringing her in, so that 's what we plan to do. Getting the children's Benadryl™ is one of our errands today. Mary discovered that it comes in a cherry flavored formulation, so Sugar should be glad to lap it up.

The southbound train went by at 11:47 p.m. last night. It seemed to be fully loaded as the house was shaking and the train was rocking on the rails. The usual contingent of two EMD GP 38 locomotives #s 2057 and 2019, were pulling a mix of 33 covered hopper cars, many in poor looking shape, and five of those dreaded black tank cars.

I missed the Bears game, and from what I have seen, it wasn't a good time for them. The final score was 15- 31 in favor of the Saints. That leaves the Bears with a current record of 5 - 9, and a losing season in 2014. Like the boys in blue for so many years, we'll have to wait until next year. Speaking of the boys in blue, they introduced Jon Lester on Monday afternoon. Once again, hope springs eternal in the hearts of Cubs™ fans everywhere.

I like the Tigers, but I'll always be a fan of the boys in blue. However, my beloved Red Sox™ visit Detroit every year, so that's all good. I also heard that the new Cubs™ minor league affiliate in South Bend, IN, will be named the Cubs™. They will be playing the West Michigan Whitecaps™ in 2015. Here's hoping that the two Major League™ teams, the Cubs™ and my beloved Red Sox™, can meet in the World Series™, soon.

So once the sun rises at 8:07 a.m. and before it sets at 5:09 p.m., we have a lot to accomplish. Ciao.

Monday, December 15, 2014

Good morning GH. It is just past 2:00 a.m. in "The City." Our current temperature of 46° will give way to an overnight low of 39° before rebounding to today's high of around 46°. How's that for an accurate forecast? We are experiencing foggy conditions at the moment. Just outside the Weather Window, visibility is limited to 1/2 mile. Sugar the Weather Dog is asleep on the couch, but last night, some idiot was setting off fireworks that drove her to the safety of her hide-e-hole downstairs. Finally, she was behind Mary's chair in the media room. Even in the middle of winter she isn't safe. I guess that the warm weather brought out the nuts.

I just watched the southbound train run pass by. Twin EMD GP 38 locomotives towing 12 covered hopper cars. I hope to be asleep before the northbound run. Turns out that I was able to sleep for several hours and then get up at 6:50 a.m. and still see the northbound run. The same pair of locomotives, #s 2057 and 2019, followed by: one of those dreaded black tank cars, 21 covered hopper cars, one in the old Seaboard Cost Line livery, a few with heavy graffiti, another of those dreaded black tank cars, and then three more covered hopper cars. I'm guessing that the people I saw outside the Weather Window were not happy about the morning delay on their Monday morning commute.

Yesterday. Sugar, Mary, and I took a long morning walk that took us down to the waterfront. That walk wore the intrepid weather dog out. She spent the day sleeping before her evening exploded. Later, I decided to go to the library to pick up that book I mentioned yesterday. I also found the sequel to the last novel I read, so I picked that up too. While at the library, I decided to watch the musical performance by Sweet Blue, a group of blues musicians who were very good. The price was right.

Later in the afternoon, we sat down to watch the Lions nearly lose to the Vikings. Mary put together some chips and cheese for our TV viewing pleasure. The Lions offense couldn't get on track and their defense kept them in the game. Prior to that, I watched the Packers lose to Buffalo. The Packers QB had one of his worst games ever. Lots of incomplete passes and drops. The win by the Lions gave them sole possession of first place in their division. Tonight, the Bears are on TV, trying to salvage their season. To finish 8 - 8, they'd have to win out. That seems unlikely at this time, given that they have to face the Saints tonight, the Lions next week, and close out against the Vikings.

Today, I have to walk with Sugar and then do some editing of that index that Mary is finishing for today's due date. It will take few hours, but that's what I get paid the big bucks for. I also want to play with the girls and do some additional reading. We'll probably get over to Spring Lake on Tuesday to pick up my new lenses.

After the sun rises at 8:09 a.m., assuming that Sugar and I can see where we are going, we'll pick up the newspaper to see what's been happening over the weekend. I expect a call from Sugar's doctor's office regarding her appointment for vaccinations and a pawdicure. The sun will set at 5:11 p.m. and then the day will be complete. Ciao.

Saturday, December 13, 2014

Good evening GH. I am getting an early start on my blog because I'd prefer to stay in bed all night. Too often the best laid plans of mice and men, etc., etc., etc. We have a current temperature outside the Weather Window of 42° as we proceed towards the overnight low of 37°. Once the sun rises tomorrow at 8:08 a.m., we are supposed to see a peak temperature of 44° with cloudy skies and a 20% chance of precipitation. Monday, the temperature will approach 50° with that same chance of precipitation. Tuesday the chance of precipitation increases to 70% with a high temperature of 42°. Unfortunately as the week wears on, the daily high temperatures will not be much above 30° under cloudy skies. But, no rain or snow is in the forecast.

Today I put up our tree, and Mary hung the ornaments I painted on the dining room chandelier. She thinks that the ornaments look great, but like all creators, I can easily find the flaws. Still, like many things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I took the following pictures of our tree and the ornaments for posterity.
Although not easy to see, the ornaments on our tree are reflective of the many places that Mary and I have visited over the past few years. The idea came from Steph and Adam.
Actually, on second thought, I do like them after all.
Otherwise, my day was filled with walking the intrepid weather dog and reading the newspaper that Sugar and I picked up this morning. Naturally, I had to work the crossword. Later, I finished transcribing an Irish carol entitled Christmas in Killarney. Of course, I had to spend some time with the girls too. Mary spent her day working on the project that is due Monday. Now she is in the kitchen futzing around. Futzing is defined as unstructured, playful, often experimental interaction between a human being and a computer, product or any technology, sometimes, but not always with a productive purpose in mind. I think that sums things up nicely. She said that she wanted to do the dishes that had accumulated. She finds the activity therapeutic. I do the dishes to be helpful and earn my keep.

Tomorrow, I don't have any tasks planned. That in itself feels odd. I'll be walking with Sugar in the morning, but that is always a pleasure. I do have a puzzle to get started on too. I may begin reading my next book as well as picking up another at the library. I have to do that without Sugar, because she isn't a therapy dog, at least not to others. There is a small combo playing in the library lobby tomorrow afternoon between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., so I may time my visit to catch their efforts. As always, a game time decision.

Speaking of games, I believe that the Lions are the late game tomorrow, so that should fit in nicely with my non structured day. I like football, and I plan to view a few college games on New Year's Day, but baseball is life and spring is still on tap for February 20. That's when the pitchers and catchers report for spring training with my beloved Red Sox. Let's see, that's only 68 days away.

That looks like it for me. The sun will set over our fair city, at 5:10 p.m. tomorrow. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:30 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature outside the Weather Window of 36° is as low as we'll get this morning. Once the sun rises at 8:07 a.m., the forecast is for temperatures to rise to 40°, with fog a possibility. Sunday looks about the same, however the temperature will rise to 44° under cloudy skies. Given the extremes that the people on either coast are experiencing, I'll take the winter weather right here in GH, at least this winter.

I got those lights added or relocated in the man-cave yesterday. I can actually see down there now. I also added our new bright green light bulb to the front porch light. But in the process, I discovered my first project for the spring, refurbishing the fixture. It has no gaskets left between the sections and the fixture itself needs painting. I've done that before, so although it will be time consuming, it should be a relatively simple fix. Some elbow grease, gasket material, and paint, and I'm done. I bet that Adam knows how these little things can become big projects when you think they'll be small.

I finally got the tree box up from the man-cave. I plan to set it up today, barring any unforeseen activities while out in the fog, with Sugar the Weather Dog. Yeah I know, a bad rhyme. I also dusted again to prepare for the tree lighting. In between, I had to brush the intrepid weather dog multiple times, as she is doing her annual shedding, in large clumps. I'll be walking with her to her doctor one day next week for her requisite vaccinations and a pawdicure, so when I'm there, I'll ask about the shedding.

Mary and I walked into town last evening to pick up some stamps at the Post Office. Then we proceeded to the favorite watering hole for dinner. As we were there, we had to have a couple of libations to wash down dinner. Then home, where I changed into my nightshirt, and promptly fell asleep in the media room. I was watching an old movie, Summer Stock, starring Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and a large cast of MGM actors from the 1950s. Oh well, it will be on again.

Today will be time with the girls, tree lighting, and weather dog walking. With winter temperatures in the 40s, what's not to like? The sun will set at 5:09. Mary will be working, as she has a Monday deadline for a project. I must get her to print out that book for highlighting. However, I found out that my new lenses were not in at the eye doctor when I called them. That's because the lenses hadn't been ordered. They'll be in on Monday. Ciao.

Friday, December 12, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:00 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature outside the Weather Window of 34° will drop gradually to the overnight low of 26° before once again climbing to today's post sunrise (8:07 a.m.) high of 35°. The gradual warm-up has begun, peaking at Monday's high of 45°. Some days will be windier than others, but overall, both Sugar the Weather Dog and I will find it better than running from the ice and snow.

Thursday found me still waiting for those lenses. Maybe today. Sigh. Sugar and I took our morning walk and that consisted of a trip to the newspaper box and back. I found time to get the laundry done and also to read more in my latest novel. The girls and I spent some time together. In fact, Abaigael and I worked together to polish up a tune that wasn't quite right. We found a nice chord combination that substitutes nicely for one that is much harder to play and is only a fleeting requirement. A good effort on the part of Abby and myself.

Trainspotting consisted of my hearing the southbound run of a heavily laden train. The northbound run should be along soon, but I won't be around to view it. Or, I might.

Today, I have plans to install the new shop light Mary and I picked up at the local big-box home center. I found that while working in the man-cave that the lighting over the workbench was insufficient for my old eyes. I may find time to bring the tree up and get it in place too.

In other news, the boys in blue are now being criticized for doing too much to actually get to the World Series™. A front line free agent pitcher, a top-notch manger, although they have had one or two of those before, and a farm system that is producing quality players, has left some long suffering fans longing for the good old days of low expectations and open seats in the park. Personally, I've waited long enough. Theo Epstein and his management team were brought in to create a winner. It was a former manager, Leo Durocher, who once said "Nice guys finish last." I think he also said something about the boys that they were better than their dismal finish the season before he took over as manager. His new team then proceeded to go out and lose even more. In seven seasons, the closest the boys got was in 1969, when they had another collapse, and were overtaken by the "Miracle Mets." Is this the year? As a veteran fan for 56 years, a veteran of the futility that has been north side baseball, I hope so. I started the journey at age seven, and I'll be 64 this year.

That looks like enough activity and speculation for one blog. The sun will set at 5:09 p.m., and I'll be done with my day too. Ciao.

Thursday, December 11, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:00 a.m. in "The City." We have a current temperature of 25°, as we drop to the overnight low of 20°. We'll rebound to 35° later today and by Friday we'll see 36° under partly cloudy skies. Saturday will be warmer still, albeit more cloudy, with an expected high of 37°. We are in a warming cycle until Monday.

We finished the index about 4:00 p.m. yesterday and then we went out to get my pay. I opted for cheese and onion enchiladas at the favorite watering hole. I like to think that that was premium pay. We also stopped off at the Post to see Sally to get some soup she had prepared. I haven't eaten it yet, but the day is young. We made it home about 7:00 p.m. and Sugar the Weather Dog was here to greet us, as always. She was in full needy mode as we finished the index, but I find that endearing. Later, we sat and watched a Hallmark Channel™ movie and then it was time for bed, at least for me.

I didn't see or hear a trains last night. This morning at 3:12 a.m., the northbound train rumbled through. Twin locomotives towing 56 covered hopper cars, one box car, 10 of those dreaded black tank cars, a lone white tanker, and a gray with white stripe tanker. In short, it was a long train.

I'm hoping to get a call from the eye doctor that my new lenses are in and ready to pick up. They would make reading that next highlighting project a bit easier. I have the day off to do what I wish today. That means that I have time to read, play with the girls, set up the tree, and do some laundry, after walking with the intrepid weather dog. She and I went out yesterday as Mary finished some work, and when we stopped by the library to drop some books, the city was taking down a tree with chain saws, a wood chipper and lots of extraneous noise. Sugar could not get away from there fast enough.

My baking yak visited yesterday. It was a sharp twinge that passed quickly, but it was not welcome.

The sun will rise at 8:05 a.m. and set at 5:09 p.m. Ciao.

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just passing 3:30 a.m. in "The City." With a pre-sunrise temperature of 31°, that drops to an overnight low of 25° before the sun rises at 7:58 a.m. In addition, the daily forecast for today calls for a high of 33° under partly cloudy skies this morning, which give way to partly sunny skies in the afternoon. Thursday, the National Weather Service is calling for a high of 35° under mostly sunny skies.

If the reports from the winter meetings are true, the boys in blue snatched the prize player from this year's free agent class. Jon Lester, a left handed pitcher with appearances in the World Series™, has inked a deal for $155 million for six years, with an option for seven years. That comes on the heels of signing Jason Hammels, a right handed pitcher, for $20 million for two years, and acquiring catcher Miguel Montero from the Arizona Diamondbacks. As the Yankees have proven, big spending can win a pennant and a World Series™, or not. As the boys have proven, spending money on an outfielder who can hit, or a pitcher who turned out to be more promise than reality can easily backfire. As for my beloved Red Sox, Lester was a dream, but the money talked and that other stuff walked. That other team from Chicago traded for Jeff Samardzija, former boys pitcher, and once the ace of their staff. He never had good luck on the north side.

In trainspotting, it turned into train-hearing. The southbound run went through at around 10:30 p.m. last night, and the northbound train went through around 2:00 a.m. The noise was not that of long trains.

Today, I am doing that editing for Mary. Surprisingly, she is slightly ahead of schedule on this index. It does mean that I'll have to get up earlier to get started. I was supposed to get that index yesterday, but like many things in the indexing world, schedules are subject to slippage. However, we are still on time, schedule wise.

In addition, Mary received word that another book is in the pipeline. It is purported to be about 400 pages. That's in addition to the one I just finished highlighting a few days ago. That one is due Monday. I just got the highlighter ink off of my hands.

I got in some time with the girls yesterday, and that always makes me feel good. Before that, I had noticed while I was downstairs for lunch, that the kitchen needed sweeping. That led me to seeing that Sugar's couch needed the cover washed, the sink in the downstairs bathroom needed its drain cleaned, and the carpets downstairs, and up, needed vacuuming. When Sugar the Weather Dog and I were out for our morning constitutional yesterday, I noticed a piece of her fur coat falling off. This time of year, with temperatures fluctuating, and as the ins and outs of daily life in Sugar's world come into play, and in spite of brushing, Sugar sheds. I love her anyway. She is the "Cutest dog on the planet."

So before the sun sets on me at 5:11 p.m. I'll being saying Ciao.

Tuesday, December 9, 2014

Good morning GH. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City", where we have a current temperature of 35° that feels like 28°, as we drop to the overnight low of 22°. That's a lot to happen between now and sunrise at 8:04 a.m. Today, the skies will be partly cloudy and the temperature will rise to a high of 37° with a 10% chance of precipitation. Wednesday, with have a lower temperature, but there will be sunny skies.

Yesterday when Sugar the Weather Dog and I went for our morning constitutional, we got out just a tad late. Sugar rushed tot he mud room eagerly. However once there, she sensed a disturbance in the force which she had not noticed in her mad rush. She wanted to get back in to avoid the coming sleet and snow event. I forced her out, we picked up the newspaper and headed home. She was right, there was just a hint of ice on the sidewalks to contend with, but that morphed into a full-on storm as the day wore on. Sugar wasted no time in beating a hasty retreat to the protection of Mary's office when we got home, before I made her go out again.

In other news, those ornaments are done. Mary came up with the solution that I needed regarding how to apply the matte finish without making the entire palatial estate smell. I opened one-half of the outer doors to the man-cave, and held each ornament in the fresh air to allow for spraying. It took all of two minutes. I used to have a small, well ventilated, spray area in our old house for that purpose.

Today I may get that Christmas tree set up. Or not. I will get more time in with the girls if editing doesn't supersede. I'll also get in a walk with the intrepid one if the sidewalks don't look too ice covered. Plus I'll read more of my new book. The Ghosts of Belfast, by Stuart Neville. Different, much like the type of novels that I like, but different.

Trainspotting yielded only the southbound run late last evening at 1:20 p.m. Locomotives # 2057 and 2019 were towing eight covered hopper cars. I never heard the northbound run, which should have happened about three hours later.

Well that's enough before the early morning hours get away. The sun will set at 5:10 p.m., and that means that I can too. Ciao.

Sunday, December 7, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 11:30 p.m. in "The City." We have a current temperature of 32° as we drop to our overnight low of 30°. Monday we'll have a high temperature of 37° with an 80% chance of showers after the sun rises at 8:03 a.m. If that's the case, then Sugar the Weather Dog will not be going out with me in the morning. Like always, the morning constitutional will be a game time decision. The intrepid weather dog and I got in two walks today, so she should be fine with her walking quota.

I finished painting those ornaments earlier today. Now all I have to do is apply the matte finish and they'll be complete. I am not as steady in the hands as I used to be, but I think they look fine. Once I get that matte finish on them, I'll include a picture.

I found time to play with the girls this afternoon. I like to think that I sounded great. In addition, I finished the crossword puzzle from the weekend Grand Haven Tribune.

I started reading my latest novel. This book is by an author who is new to me. I saw him on the web site for new books posted by the library. I've started with the earliest book, so that I don't get out of sequence which I have done before with other authors. The setting is Ireland, a place that Mary and I have visited and which is responsible for some of the music that I love. I think that there may be an Irishman in my wood pile somewhere along the line. I also have another author from that same library source.

Tonight at 9:52 p.m., the southbound train rolled by, a rare three locomotive combination towing two box cars and 17 covered hopper cars. Somehow I doubt that I'll be up to see the northbound run. Turns out I was wrong. At about 2:30 a.m., the northbound train rolled past. Two locomotives, followed by one box car, then seven covered hopper cars, and then nine, count them, nine, of those dreaded black tank cars. Finally, a lone covered hopper was car bringing up the rear. Now I know that there won't be any more trains tonight.

Monday, I'll be putting that matte finish on the ornaments, listening to the radio, and reading more of that novel. If Sugar and I get out, I'll get the newspaper. All of that will happen before the sun sets at 5:10 p.m. Mary will be working, so I"ll be on my own. That's okay, I think I can survive. If I am feeling ambitious, I'll bring the Christmas tree up from the man cave and get it set up. Then it will feel like Christmas to me. Ciao.
Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:00 a.m. in "The City."  Today's sunrise will happen at 8:02 a.m. and sunset will happen at 5:10 p.m. In between we'll have a high temperature of 38° under partly sunny skies. Monday, the National Weather Service is predicting a 70% chance of a snow/rain mix with a high temperature of 37°. I like today's forecast much better.

In news that is only relevant to me, Sugar the Weather Dog and I took our morning walk, without incident. Afterwards, I finished highlighting that 200 plus page book. It took me about five hours total, including commentary. In addition, I am nearing completion of the painting of those ornaments. It looks like I have another two to three sessions of painting in store. Now that I have discovered that my radio works in the man-cave, I am in hog heaven.

Later in the day, when Mary had finished her work, she and I walked downtown to watch the Jingle Bell Parade. Lot's of kids, lots of dogs, girl and boy scouts, and a few musical acts. We also saw our neighbor towing a trailer load of young people. We didn't stay for the entire parade, because we got cold standing in one place. One of the hazards of getting older, I guess.

Once home, I adjourned to the media room to watch Independence Day, and then I stayed up long enough to write this blog.

Later today, after I walk with the intrepid weather dog, I'll adjourn to the man-cave and try to finish those ornaments while Mary works. I think I look spiffy in my new multipurpose apron. I can wear it in the man-cave and in the kitchen. As the day progresses, I'll get in more time with the girls too. I'd also like to start a new novel that I had Mary pick up at the library a few days ago. In short, a busy day of retirement. Ciao.

Saturday, December 6, 2014

It's late or early enough now for me to say Good Morning GH, as it is just passing 4:00 a.m. in "The City." We have a current temperature outside the Weather Window of 36°as we fall to the overnight low of 25°, before we head back towards today's high of 36° with 15 mph winds. It should be fine for viewing the Jingle Bell Parade later this evening. Sunday's weather looks about the same with lighter winds.

Yesterday I got more of those ornaments painted. More to go. I also finished highlighting that 500 plus page book. However, there is another one of 200 plus pages on my desk to do. See what I mean about my slave driver boss?  In betwixt and between, I got some laundry done and changed the light bulbs in the dining room chandelier. Sugar and I had a nice morning walk, and that was about it for the day.

Later, we journeyed across the bridge to get my new apron at the Ace™ Hardware Store, and then stopped off at the favorite watering hole on that side of the bridge. Dinner was served.

Since it was now time to get home, we did. I sat for a while and then I went upstairs to get ready for bed. I did and I did, get into bed that is. Except for a short visit with Mary for a snack around 11:00 p.m., I have been sleeping soundly ever since early last evening.

Today will be more painting, more highlighting, a chance to play with the girls, and a possible visit to the downtown to see the parade. Naturally, the morning constitutional withe intrepid weather dog is the first event of the day. That's after I listen to some Saturday morning radio while Mary works. I like that.

The sun will rise at 8:01 a.m. and set at 5:10 p.m. Ciao.

Friday, December 5, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:30 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature of 31° belies that fact that it feels like 23°, albeit w/o precipitation. We are expecting a high temperature of 37° today, and Saturday will be similar. No precipitation and nothing to shovel. What's not to like? The sun will be rising at 7:58 a.m. today before setting at 5:09 p.m.

I had a quiet day yesterday. The time seemed to get away from me though. I did the crossword after walking with Sugar the Weather Dog and Mary. Mary stopped off at the library to pick up some books, but Sugar was more intent on walking that worrying, so we kept on our rounds. Sometimes, Sugar get's very upset when one of her humans get's "Sucked up" by that big building with books in it.

I thought I was done with leaf raking, but I needed to do more when I got home. There is only that down side to melting the snow. Another day, another bag filled. Then I went to the man-cave to continue the painting of the ornaments. I still have a few sessions to go as the various colors dry. I did more highlighting yesterday as Mary worked on another project, and I am now 90% complete. Then it was time to return some things to the big-box hardware/home center in Muskegon and to stop once again at the big-box everything store for yet another return and to pick up some things that we didn't get the other day. This experience at that store was a total turn-around from the previous visit.

Then home for a visit to the favorite watering home, followed by a nap in the media room. If I could have stayed in yesterday afternoon/evening, I would have, but sometimes you just have to go out. One more out this weekend, possibly to the annual Jingle Bells Parade Saturday evening, and we should be done.

Apparently I missed any trainspotting and that's okay with me. Ciao.

Thursday, December 4, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:00 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature outside the Weather Window of 28°, is accompanied by NO precipitation of any type or form is in the forecast. The National Weather Service is showing that our high today will be 32° along with that 0% forecast. Friday will be 37° to accompany another 0% prediction. In fact, even Saturday will have only a 10% chance of precipitation with a high temperature of 36°. It looks like Sunday will be the best this week, with sunny skies, no precipitation, and 37 balmy degrees. Today, before sunrise at 7:59 a.m., we'll see our overnight low of 23°.

We are getting closer to the shortest days of the year on December 21 and 22, 2014, and then it's downhill from there. On that day and the next, the sun will rise at 8:13 a.m., and set at 5:14 p.m. Today when the sun sets at 5:11 p.m. we'll still be enjoying a longer day.

Speaking of the winter solstice, it is always followed by the coming of spring. This year, that happens for the Cleveland Indians on February 18, 2015. As far as I'm concerned, that's when spring begins, when pitchers and catchers report for spring training. Both the Tigers and the boys in blue have yet to announce their spring dates. That's also true of that other team from Chicago. However good news abounds. My beloved Red Sox report on February 20, 2015.

Trainspotting, yes. Well actually I am issuing an aural report from about 9:30 p.m. last night and about 12:10 a.m. this morning.

In other news, Mary got a call for a rush job from one of her packaging partners yesterday. A short turnaround time, but a short book too. By late afternoon, I had painted the red portion of those Christmas tree ornaments and now I have to do some of the other colors and allow them to dry. In between, I made a fresh batch of chickpeas seasoned with red hot sauce and a new squash type, since I had the oven running.

As the day wore down, Mary decided it was time to go to the Post and visit with Sally. We took along some of my newly baked banana nut bread. I had tasted it earlier and pronounced it fine. Sugar the Sous Dog was sad to see any portion of the loaf go out the door. I need to get the correct battery for my desk clock later this week. Maybe when we are across the bridge for my replacement lenses I can accomplish that feat.

Today, more playing with the girls, more ornament painting, more crossword puzzling, and more picking up some books at the library. All of that after the morning constitutional with Sugar the Weather Dog when we pick up the morning edition of the Grand Haven Tribune. Ciao.

Wednesday, December 3, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:00 a.m. in "The City." A current temperature of 34° belies the fact that we have unexpected precipitation on the ground in the form of snow. Not much, but not in keeping with the forecast of 0% either. In fact, the current forecast calls for a high of 32° after the sun rises at 7:56 a.m., and long before the sun sets at 5:09 p.m. However, if the forecast is right, at least we'll have sunny skies later today. Sugar the Weather Dog and I are, or will be, happy about that. When we were out yesterday, the wind was blowing strongly out of the east into our faces as we walked home. However, the westerly winds today may also be less than pleasant.

We made it to my appointment at the eye doctor yesterday after running several errands along the way. While my prescription is accurate according to the doctor, she suggested that the prescription for the reading portion of my bifocals could be increased, so that is what I am having done. The new lenses should be ready in a few days.

Speaking of those errands, we had to stop in the big-box everything store to get some things that are not available locally. While they do have nearly everything, the dearth of assistance beyond the front door is a challenge. Needless to say, it was also too hot in the store for people dressed for the weather. They ask if you enjoyed your experience at the exit, but in between, you can't find anyone to help you.

Prior to that, we stopped at the big-box hardware and home center to return a defective item and to have a key made. The self-service key machine didn't have the blank we needed, so we still had to stop at the "Helpful Hardware Place", Ace™, in Spring Lake. If possible, I'll do all my hardware shopping there in the future.

At least when we were done, we got to stop at the favorite watering hole and then off to the Post for another libation or two. All good once we were done with our errands.

I almost forgot. At 9:13 p.m., locomotives #2019 and 2057 rolled by heading south at a good rate of speed. They were towing one box car, nine covered hopper cars, three white tank cars, a lone dreaded black tank car, followed by an additional white tank car bringing up the rear. The northbound train went by at about 12:02 a.m., but I can only speculate that it was of a similar composition.

Today, I get the day off from highlighting. I am enough ahead to get on to other things on my agenda. Other than a pleasure walk with the intrepid weather dog, I have nowhere to go and all day to get there. Ciao.

Tuesday, December 2, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:15 a.m. in "The City", where the current temperature outside the Weather Window is 14°, although it feels like 13°. 14° is supposed to be our low for the night. There is still no precipitation on the horizon, although we did see a few flakes of snow earlier on Monday. Today when the sun rises at 7:57 a.m., the temperature will rise to a much warmer 35° under partly cloudy skies. As the day progresses towards sunset at 5:11 p.m., the temperature will once again drop, but the low will only be 31°. With the exception of the high on Monday, the temperatures in December are starting out nicely. Each day in the five day forecast from the National Weather Service shows that we will stay in the low to mid thirties, with a slim chance of precipitation.

Sugar the Weather Dog, Mary, and I took the morning constitutional on Monday. Sugar and I dropped Mary off at the Health Hutt for some groceries, and then we headed home by way of the Book Man, our local independent book seller, after Sugar was done sniffing. Mary came home shortly thereafter.

Mary had to go to work, and since she had some ripening bananas, Sugar the Sous Dog and I made another loaf of my famous banana nut bread. However, we weren't done. I followed up the banana nut bread with a loaf of whole wheat bread from the same cookbook, Mary's Fanny Farmer cookbook from the 1970s. Both loaves turned out great, and so I have included a picture of both loaves directly below. The dark loaf is the whole wheat.
Since I am now a pie baker, I thought I'd try my hand at a loaf of whole wheat bread.
Earlier on Monday evening at 9:02 p.m., I watched the southbound train rumble by. Locomotives #2057 and #2014 were towing one box car, 20 covered hopper cars, and two of those dreaded black tank cars, with a gray or white tank car bringing up the rear. That  train was, much earlier than usual. The northbound train went by at 12:10 a.m. The same EMD GP 38 locomotives were towing a similar configuration of cars. Six covered hopper cars, four of those dreaded black tank cars, and one gray tank car separating the white and black tank cars.

Today I have those ornaments to paint after I walk with the intrepid weather dog. Then I can settle in for some additional highlighting for Mary. I am up to page 269 of 514, so that makes me 52% finished. I am liking the subject matter, so it is going smoothly. I always said that if I was going to get my PhD, that I'd get one for the period that surrounds the Revolutionary War and the writing of the Constitution. So you can guess what the subject matter of my highlighting efforts includes.

Other than that, I have an appointment to see the eye doctor to get my new glasses checked for the reading prescription. I want them to be better than I am seeing right now. Ciao.

Sunday, November 30, 2014

Good evening GH. I am a bit premature with this posting, but that's the way the ball rolls sometimes. I just finished watching some inane TV show, so I thought I'd sit down and write this blog. Just think of this as the early morning blog I would normally offer.

We have a current temperature of 33° as we head down to the overnight low of 21°, before we rebound to a post sunrise temperature of 23°, albeit with a 0% chance of precipitation for the next several days. Incidentally, the sunrise tomorrow will occur at 7:56 a.m,. and the sunset will happen at 5:11 p.m. Sugar the Weather Dog and I will take the morning constitutional in less than ideal conditions. I must say although the temperature today was warmer, the wind out of the west was a harbinger of things to come. The mist was being blown right in our faces as we walked westward. Still, we had a good time.

Mary wasn't able to accompany us, as she was busy printing out her latest project. When Sugar and I returned, it was time for the morning juices, flax seed capsules. Breakfast consisted of leftover deviled eggs that had morphed into egg salad sandwiches, with homemade applesauce on the side. Later we had more of the greens that Stephany had made for Thanksgiving, along with stuffing muffins, turkey for me, and everything smothered in Mary's delicious gravy. I had the lion's share of the greens, but that is fine with me.

That means that so far, we have had three meals from the Thanksgiving dinner that Stephany prepared. We are likely to get one more meal, and if you count the original meal, that makes five. Plus, there are still some mashed potatoes in the refrigerator and greens in the freezer. I am in heaven.

I just watched the southbound run of the twin locomotives. They were "deadheading" to borrow a phrase. and that means that they will likely be returning north with cars in tow. It is likely that I won't be awake to see that trip.

I got the laundry done today, all of it. Now I have to get busy highlighting Mary's nest indexing project. I started it and I like the subject matter. That means that it will be a labor of love. I still expect to be paid for my efforts. Once you work for free, you will be expected to always work for free, so I won't make an exception now or ever. My boss is too much of a slave driver.

Otherwise, I got in some time with the girls and that's a good thing anytime. In the next few days, I'll be setting up the Christmas tree, which means that I have to fit in painting the new ornaments. I'll be heading off to bed in a few minutes, and then I hope to sleep the sleep that I deserve. Ciao.
Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:30 in the early morning on this dark night. Right outside the Weather Window, there is nothing to see. There is also a current temperature of 48° as we drop to the overnight low of 44°. When the sun rises at 7:54 a.m. the new dawn will bring a high temperature that will be about one degree lower than the overnight low that is currently predicted by the National Weather Service. By Monday, the high is expected to get to a not so balmy 23° under partly partly cloudy skies. Go figure.

We had a great holiday. We joined Stephany and Adam for Thanksgiving dinner on Friday. As is always the case, Adam laid out the various appetizers and Stephany outdid herself in the kitchen. Her dressing muffins, greens, my personal favorite, green bean casserole, and the mashed potatoes to which Adam gave  his blood, sweat, but no tears, were all excellent. Leftovers abounded. Stephany made extra greens just for me to have leftovers, and for that I thank her. We were fortunate enough to carry some leftovers home and I will enjoy all of them. In fact yesterday, we did, in fact, start the enjoyment. Mary made her gravy to add to the feast.

On the way home, we stopped off to pick up Sugar the Weather Dog and she was glad to see us, as we were glad to see her too. Once home, she immediately went to couch and was gone to the world. I was tired after our holiday activities, and so I retired to the La-Z-Boy for a nap. Two hours later, Mary woke me and we journeyed to the Post to have an afternoon cocktail and enjoy the conversation.

In between, the Wolverines of Michigan lost to the 28 - 42. We watched the start of the Spartans of Michigan State defeat of the Nittany Lions of Penn State, 34 - 10. On Friday, the Huskies of Northern Illinois University, handled the Western Michigan Broncos, 31 - 21, in a battle of MAC 10 rivals. Today, the Lions and the Bears have the day off. That's good for both teams.

Today is laundry day after Sugar, Mary and me take the morning constitutional. The predicted temperature will make for a great time, I'm sure. Then I'll settle in for the crossword and watch the laundry go round and round. Afterwards, I should find time to play with the girls. That should be enough for the day as Mary continues her work. I'll wait until Monday, December 1, to start the annual Christmas tree set up. Mary feels strongly that I shouldn't get started before the month of December. I like her thinking, but the major retailers got started a bit earlier than I.

The sun will set at 5:11 p.m., and then I will be ready for the day's labors to end.

That looks like it's time to say Ciao before the sun rises, so Ciao.

Friday, November 28, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:00 a.m. in "The City." We have a current temperature of 21° as we await the rising of the sun at 7:53 a.m. Naturally, as the Earth rotates, the sun will set at 5:12 p.m. A 60% chance of precipitation is expected today, but that shouldn't cause any travel concerns for Mary and me. Especially me, since I don't have to drive. Saturday, the chance of precipitation falls to 40% as the temperature rises to 43°. Sunday we are supposed to get to 46° as people begin their long treks home from their family gatherings.

I had a great Thanksgiving. Mary worked, I walked with Sugar the Weather Dog, and then I went to work in the kitchen paring apples. Sugar the Sous Dog was there to assist, as always. As I prepared the applesauce, she was able to partake to of the apples I was paring. I also pared enough apples to make an apple pie. My pie was a scratch effort. I used no store bought items that weren't in their most basic state before I began. I have included a picture directly below to highlight my efforts.
For my first effort, I like to think it looks great and will also taste great. Photo courtesy of Mary.
Once I had cleaned up after myself, Mary came down and continued using the oven, as she baked a loaf of rye bread she has been working on for two days. Then she got to work on some deviled eggs. All in all, the kitchen was a busy place yesterday. Sugar the Sous Dog was ever vigilant to make sure that nothing went awry.

I found time to complete the crossword from yesterday's newspaper too, along with finding time to play the girls. In short, what a great day. I watched a small amount of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from NYC. Three hours was more than I could give to that activity. Then it was time for football. The Detroit Lions were victorious over the Chicago Bears, 34 - 17. As a transplanted Michigander I was torn, but I'm glad that a team that I follow won the game.

Today we'll be traveling south for Thanksgiving dinner with family. I have it on good authority that the greens are taking over the kitchen where we are heading. That's okay with me, because I love greens. I didn't know that until a few years ago, because greens were not something that my mother nor my maternal grandmother ever prepared. Of course, it wasn't that long ago that I discovered that I liked deviled eggs too. I used to eat just the egg whites from hard boiled eggs, But one day I reasoned out that if I liked eggs scrambled, I could eat egg salad and deviled eggs too. Even fried eggs are now in my repertoire. I still don't care for mushrooms nor bananas. Sugar the Sous Dog can always have my share.

That looks like enough for two or three days. Ciao.

Thursday, November 27, 2014

This being Thanksgiving, I'll just be thankful and start out by saying, thanks to Mary, Stephany, and Adam, just for the sheer joy of having family. Thanks to everyone who helps out the homeless, the needy, the hungry, and any lost souls, whether animal or human.

That being said, I wasn't going to get up and blog, but sometimes the best laid plans, etc., etc.

Just outside the Weather Window, it is still cold and there is snow. More on the way, but I don't have to travel today, so that's fine with me. Sugar the Weather Dog and I will take our regular morning constitutional, if that counts as traveling. The sun will rise at 7:52 a.m., and set at 5:11 p.m., and nothing I do will change that. That in itself feels good and reassuring.

I got all of the housework done yesterday, so today I think I'll peel the remaining apples and make apple sauce. I may also take time to bake an apple pie, and since Mary will be upstairs and out of her kitchen, I should be able to accomplish that without interference from the "owner" of the kitchen. Sugar will be at the ready in her role as Sous Dog extraordinaire to lend a paw whatever I do. I will also find more time to play with the girls. Of course, I may also find time to watch the Lions and the Bears at noon after the annual Thanksgiving parades.

Yesterday, we had plans to go see those Christmas trees in Muskegon, but the pre-holiday traffic on the highway made us change our minds. Instead, we decided to visit Sally and the folks at the Post. Then it was off to the favorite watering hole for dinner. For the people who have tired of their families by then, the watering hole will open at 4:00 p.m. today.

So that looks like enough for me. Ciao.

Wednesday, November 26, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 5:30 a.m. in "The City." Our current temperature outside the Weather Window is 31 cloudy degrees. According to the National Weather Service, the temperature will not drop further under partly cloudy skies, however with a 10 mph wind, it feels like 21°. That's all before the sun rises at 7:50 a.m. We should be light on precipitation today, but on Thanksgiving that changes to an 80% chance of one to three inches of snow, and don't tell Mary, but that may be the same on Friday. Temperatures are expected to stay the same. at 31°. We have plans to travel on Friday, but neither of us is thrilled about driving in those conditions. Once again, a game-day decision.

I got bad news earlier on Tuesday. I got my few hairs cut, but my Barber, Joe, told me that December 18, will be his last day in his shop. He'll be moving his expertise across town for one to two months, and then he's off to Florida for a well earned retirement. That means I'll have to break in a new barber, close to home, and probably pay higher prices for my limited needs. Best wishes Joe.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, the floors got swept and washed in all the tiled rooms. Today, I have plans to finally get to that dusting and vacuuming that I have been putting off. Then I'll be done with my housework and I can get back to playing with the girls. Well, I generally find time for that activity everyday. I also have to get to work on some ornaments for our Christmas tree. That and work on my latest puzzle. Mary pointed out that for a retired guy and a work at home person we are certainly busy. I am beginning to understand why my late mother-in-law was always so busy. Work and other activities expand to fill your time in retirement.

On her part, Mary will be working on business activity while I am dusting and vacuuming around her. She spent about three hours the other night cleaning "her" kitchen Sunday or was that Mondays night. She professed that it was physically taxing. No doubt. But once I had changed the overhead light bulbs to some that are significantly brighter, the need for cleaning became all too apparent. As she says, she uses her kitchen, it is not a "Set" for a commercial or magazine. I am "allowed" to use it too. Naturally, it is also Sugar the Weather Dog's "mess hall" also. In addition, in Sugar's role as household Sous Dog, she spends nearly as much time there as Mary, certainly more than me.

Speaking of her kitchen, Mary made leftovers for lunch yesterday, and then using things that she had in her freezer and cabinets, she made a delicious spinach lasagna for dinner. This recipe is a definite keeper. Spices, tomato paste, and tomato juice were in there somewhere, along with the lasagna noodles, I believe. I just watched TV.

I'll be dong that vacuuming and dusting before the sun sets at 5:11 p. m. As I said, I'll get in some play time with the girls and then probably finish my novel. I am liking both the author's style and the subject matter. All of that will come after the morning constitutional with the intrepid weather dog. She didn't get a walk yesterday, and she wasn't happy about that. Both she and I will miss waving at Joe when we pass in the morning, and in the better weather, the afternoon. Ciao.

Tuesday, November 25, 2014

Good morning GH. It is just past 3:30 a.m. in "The City." That's the newly snow covered city Mary and I call home. Not really a lot of snow, but there is a chance for a bit less than two inches of snow total by the time this snow event ends. That's a lot different than the earlier alert which has since been revised downward from four to seven to that maximum of two inches. We have a current temperature outside the Weather Window of 30°, which will rebound to 32° as Tuesday comes into focus. Of course, that forecast is courtesy of the National Weather Service, who was also predicting one to three inches of new snow before the sun sets at 5:11 p.m. this evening. In short, like all the forecasts that they and I offer, it is subject to change.

Elsewhere on Monday, I awoke to the sound of a power shovel digging up the yard of the house two doors down. Apparently their sewer line needed repair. Sugar the Weather Dog was Sugar on the spot, and let us know that that was happening. Mary and I did a few errands after lunch, going to the shoe store and the big-box home store in Muskegon. Mary got new household slippers, I got light bulbs. That quick departure gave us the chance to avoid the latest storm front that moved in about 3:00 p. m. yesterday. The wind it blew, the snow it flew, and the temperature fell as the evening wore on. We had dinner and then, I went upstairs to watch TV, while Mary was cleaning the kitchen. In this case, I got the better part of the day's/evening's activities.

I also spent some time reading my latest fiction novel too, and I like the style of this author, Patrick F. McManus. This book was one I picked from the N.Y. Times Review of Books, titled Circles in the Snow. There are many earlier works in this series, so I should have another author to read.

Today, Mary and I will be walking to our hair stylists. Both of us will walk in the street to avoid the ice patches on the sidewalks. She will have to go about one-half block less than me. Her long hair will get styled, while my shorter hair will get cut. She'll pay more, I'll pay less, but my hair is a work in progress, while hers continues to grow.

I'll pick up today's Grand Haven Tribune, on my way home. Sugar the Weather Dog will have to go out on her tether, as I don't want to be pulled down icy sidewalks. I need the walk as does she, but I am too afraid of falling on the ice and snow that is now clinging to every horizontal surface in our fair city.

That looks like enough for yesterday and today. Ciao.

Sunday, November 23, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night in "The City." The view outside the Weather Window is dark with a side of rain. That is a harbinger of things to come tomorrow. Our current temperature is 51°. When the sun rises tomorrow at 7:49 a.m., the temperature will rise to 46° from the low of 46°, with a 100% combination of rain/snow/wind. That's a far cry from the weather that we experienced today which was, mostly mild, some rain, and a good day to take a walk with Sugar the Weather Dog.

Tomorrow, the sun will set at 5:14 p.m., with little chance for a repeat performance in the weather department. Oh well, at least the snow was gone for a day. We can expect to see less than one inch of accumulation on Monday.

Mary and I have plans to go out and about again tomorrow, but that is dependent upon her work schedule ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. There is an exhibit at the Muskegon Museum of Art that I have wanted to see for three years, called the Festival of Trees which is only displayed for 10 days each year. It started on the 20th, so it will only run through the end of the week.

Today's errands included picking up the additional embroidery hoops Mary needed to complete our tree skirt, and I got the puzzle saver for my winter puzzles. Then we stopped off at the big-box hardware store to get some LED light bulbs and a clamp to repair my desk, which I will do tomorrow in the daylight. We decided that we like the LED bulbs and their brighter light so much, that we now need to get several more.

Mary worked hard on today's dinner, and it was excellent. It featured a Celebration Roast from the fine folks at Field Roast Products™, and some potatoes and carrots that Mary had on hand. I like the Field Roast™ products a lot. The taste is great, the texture is perfect, and their offerings are all natural combinations of fruits and vegetables.

After we get the bulbs tomorrow, we'll go to the museum and view the exhibits and perhaps visit a yarn store that we visited once before, but which may not be there any longer. That seems to be our luck with yarn stores lately. However, we won't know until we get there. Then it's home to the palatial estate for some rest and relaxation.

That looks like enough for tomorrow and a good description of today's activities. Ciao.

Saturday, November 22, 2014

Good evening GH. It actually is evening, or late night if  you prefer. Since I took a nap in my chair in the media room earlier this evening, I am now awake to blog at an earlier hour. Not all bad I guess, but this has to stop. At any rate, it is just past 11:30 p.m. in "The City." We have a current temperature of 45°, and we'll be dropping to a low of 39° before the sun rises at 7:45 a.m. Sunday promises a 90% chance of more rain and a high of 51°. Sugar the Weather Dog likes the warmer temperatures, but she doesn't like not getting her morning constitutional. However, she also doesn't like the rain either. We'll have to see if we can get that walk done before the sun sets at 5:13 p.m. tomorrow evening.

Sugar might have gotten a walk this morning, but Mary was experiencing some eye issues, so we had to go to the eye doctor for a quick checkup. Everything turned out normal, apparently a consequence of her nearsightedness and her recently acquired 61 years of age. She probably won't like my mentioning that, but I like to report the facts, just like my police hero, Sgt. Joe Friday, badge #713, Dragnet, you know, the show that gave me my catch phrase. "The City", when he and his partner intoned each week, "Just the facts ma'am, just the facts."

The got the day off to a rousing start, from which we never quite recovered. We came home, had lunch and then Sugar went out on her tether. I retired to the Weather Office/Music Studio, and played the girls and read the end of my latest novel. I tried watching the MSU football game on TV, but with four possible channels from which to choose, none had the game. They were all showing Ohio State vs. Indiana. I bet there were more than a few upset fans throughout West Michigan.

So that;s how the day progressed. I spent the evening in the media room after Mary and I played a Scrabble™ type dice game. It was fun, but it soon wore itself out. As I noted earlier, I retired to the media room, and Mary stayed downstairs and read what she has called a great book.

Tomorrow the day will open more quietly, I hope. I know what it's like to experience odd symptoms that you have never experienced before. Sugar and I may get out for the newspaper we didn't get today and I may have time to read it. I'll probably start a new non-fiction book and then play more with the girls. The Lions are on at 1:00 p.m., so I may devote some of my time to that non-energy expending activity after the intrepid weather dog and I return from our morning safari. That looks like a good activity roundup. Ciao.
Good morning GH. It is just past 6:30 a.m. in "The City." Sunrise today will be at 7:45 a.m., just a short time from now. Our current temperature of 38° is as low as it will get. As the day progresses, we will see a high of 43° with a 90% chance of rain. Apparently we will miss the freezing rain due to our nearness to the shore of the "Big Lake." Tomorrow, the chance of rain will be 80% with a high temperature of 47°.

I'm not sure what the forecast portends for the morning constitutional with Sugar the Weather Dog. She likes the snow, but isn't a big fan of rain. I can't say as I blame her. Maybe I can convince Mary to take the constitutional as I have been under the weather myself the last few days. Mary convinced me to go out yesterday afternoon, and last night I was less than 100%. Oh well, that's the luck of the draw.

I made it to the dentist yesterday, and my appointment lasted all of 15 minutes. There are benefits to regular brushing.

Today, I plan to read more, play with the girls more, and maybe do that dusting I have not gotten around to, yet. Or maybe not.

Otherwise, I'll be going back to bed shortly and listening to the Saturday morning lineup on WOOD radio; Autotalk, The Pet Files, and The Flowerland Show. That will take care of the morning. Then it will be time for breakfast/lunch. I guess you could say that I plan to laze away the day.

The sun will set at 5:13 p.m. this evening. That's okay with me too. Ciao.

Friday, November 21, 2014

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:30 a.m. in "The City." The current temperature of 19° is not as low as we will get this morning. That's 11°. In addition, the temperature will rise after the sun comes up to a high of 32° with a 10% chance of additional precipitation. Saturday, the temperature rises to 41° with a 60% chance of showers. Sunday, we are expecting a 100% chance of rain and a high temperature of 45°. That snow shovel Mary and I went out to get earlier on Thursday isn't going to be needed for a few days. However this is only November. The fine folks at Ace Hardware, the helpful hardware place™ still had shovels in stock, so we bought one there along with some salt while they had that too. Last year, you couldn't buy a bag of salt as the winter wore on, and on, and on.

Mary and I traveled to the hospital for a lab appointment and doctor's visit. We also had lunch at the hospital cafeteria's salad bar. They have a great salad bar that is labeled as to fat content, nutrition, etc. Two salads were less than $9.00.

I was so cold early last evening, that I tucked myself into bed with my fleece on, and promptly fell asleep around 7:30 p.m. Later, I was so warm that I had to uncover myself. I've been down that road before.

Today I have a dental appointment, but I have to decide if it is a good idea to go. I may call the dentist and see if they think it is a good idea. It is hard to get an appointment, so I don't want to skip it if I don't have to do so.

I wasn't going to include a trainspotting report, but I'm up and the southbound train is going by, so here it is.
Two locomotives towing one box car and seven covered hopper cars. As Porky the Pig would say, "That's all Folks."

Otherwise, I don't have any plans for today. Maybe some laundry, but Mary may not let me touch that due to my feverish state. We'll have to see. The sun will set this evening at 5:15 p.m. At the rate I'm going, I may set with it. Ciao.
