Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 11:00p.m.in "The City."

Let's try to KISS this blog.

We have a current temperature of 63° under clear skies. Tomorrow's high is forecast to reach 67° under sunny skies. The winds will be strong and there is a Red Flag Warning in effect for Ottawa, County. That means that with the low humidity, there is a chance that wildfires could spread. Hopefully, not here at the PE. The sun will rise tomorrow @ 6:38 a.m. and st later @ 8:46 p.m.

The NL Central leading 16 - 10 Cubs have pulled into a .5 game lead over the losing 17 - 12 Pirates, with a hard-fought win over the 15 - 15 Colorado Rockies. Kris Bryant was brilliant at the plate and in the field as the Cubs won. 3 - 2. The Cubs and the Rockies play again tomorrow night @ 8:05 p.m. EDT.

The 11 - 16 Tigers lost another game to the 13 - 14 Rays by a score of 2 - 3. That loss finds the Tigers still in 2nd place in the AL Central, five games behind the Indians. The Tigers try to win one in Detroit tomorrow night against those same Rays @ 7:10 p.m. EDT.

My beloved AL East leading, 21 - 7 Red Sox handily defeated the 7- 24 KC Royals, 10 - 6. That win gives the Sox a 2.5 game lead over the Yankees in the AL East. The Sox and the Royals play again tomorrow night @ 7:10 p.m. EDT.

The Caps had the night off before they head to Peoria, IL to meet the Chies @ 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night.

I spotted two train runs yesterday. I say runs, because the early southbound run was only two locomotives, #s 2019 and 2025 "Deadheading" at a high rate of speed.

I was heading for my appointment at the barbershop when I spotted those same locomotives heading north @ 11:55 a.m. In tow were four CHCs, Four DBTCs, one GTC, and five DWTCs.

We finished up that index and sent it on its way yesterday afternoon. Now, Mary has to get right to work on the next index that is due in eight days. I must continue my highlighting activities after I return from the orthopedist and the library. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 9:30 p.m. in "The City."

Let's keep this one short and sweet.

We have a current temperature of 38° under clear skies. Tomorrow, the NWS is forecasting a high of 63° under sunny skies. By Tuesday, the forecast is calling for 69°, also under sunny skies. We will have a few days in the 50s, but it looks like spring has finally arrived. The sun will rise tomorrow @ 6:39 a.m. and set later @ 8:48 p.m.

To paraphrase the artist currently known as Meatloaf, three out of four ain't bad.

The 15 - 0 Cubs took another one from the 16 - 13 Brewers, 2 - 0. That win finds the Boys in Blue .5 games behind the National League Central Division leading Pirates. The Cubs welcome the Rockies tomorrow night @ 8:05 p.m. EDT

The 11 - 15 Tigers dropped another one to an inferior 8 - 20 Orioles squad, 3 - 5. That loss still finds the Tigers in 2nd place in a very weak American League Central Division, that is being led by the 14 - 12 Indians. The Tigers come home tomorrow night to face the Tampa Bay Rays @ 7:10 p.m. EDT.

My beloved 20 - 7 Red Sox are the first team to notch 20 victories this year and that finds them in 1st place in the American League East Division, 2.5 games ahead of the Yankees. The Sox meet the 7 - 20 Royals tomorrow night in Fenway @ 7:10 p.m. EDT.

The 14 - 9 Caps also had a good day today, as they edged the MWL East leading Lansing Lugnuts, 3 - 2 to pull within 1.5 games of the Lugnuts. The Caps are off until Tuesday when they travel to Peoria to battle the Chiefs @ 7:30 p.m. EDT.

Today was a great day. We took a nice walk with the fur-children, after which I read some and then made some vegan Italian faux meatballs. They turned our great. Mary finished working and we fed the fur-children and set out to walk to our favorite watering hole. We ended up with some adult libations and a basket of crinkly fries. I think that Mary was being nice to me and that's fine.

We walked home and I came up to watch some car shows and a Hallmark™ movie. Mary is downstairs, probably watching the X-Files.

Tomorrow, the index will get finished, we'll do a final edit, and then send it on its way. Mary has to get right to work on the next index which is due the 8th. That means that I have to step up my highlighting game. Ciao.
Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:00 a.m. in "The City."

Sports news yesterday was once again mixed. The 14 - 10 Cubs, behind a stellar pitching performance, the kind the Cubs expected when they traded for him, by Jose Quintana, defeated the 16 - 12 Milwaukee Brewers, 3 - 0. Several miscues by the Brewers in the field helped the Cubs as Kris Bryant returned to the Cubs' starting lineup. The Cubs won't say whether Bryant had a concussion, but his recent beaning certainly suggests that as a strong possibility. From now on, he'll be wearing a batting helmet with an ear/cheek flap. Tyler Chatwood takes the hill for the suddenly surging Cubs @ 2:20 p.m. EDT.

The 11 - 14 Tigers righted their leaking ship last night with a 9 - 5 victory over the 7 - 20 Orioles. Obviously, even though my one-time English professor, Jack Dodds, would say if it's obvious, you don't need to say it, the Tigers once again beat a team that isn't as good as themselves. At any rate, Miggy, Miguel Cabrera, socked a home-run and netted five RBIs, for the night. He freely admits that he is now too slow to achieve what baseball statisticians call "The Cycle", where a player gets all four types of his in a game, a single, a double, a triple, and a home-run. Yes, he is a lock for the Baseball Hall of Fame, likely getting more than 3,00 hits and 500 home-runs in his career, but he is in the twilight of what has been a great run for the Tigers. Dan Norris is on the bump for the Tigers today @ 1:05 p.m. EDT.

My beloved 19 - 7 Red Sox fell hard yesterday to the resurgent 12 - 13 Tampa Bay Rays, 6 - 12. Sadly, the Sox pitching once again imploded as they tried for their 20th win. Pitching Ace, former
Tiger Rick Porcello, tosses the first pitch today @ 1:05 p.m. EDT.

The 13 - 8 Caps were trying to return to first-place in the MWL East in a game against the still first-place 15 - 7 Lansing Lugnuts. Sadly, the Caps couldn't get the job done and lost to the Lugnuts, 5 - 13. Yesterday's loss drops the Caps 1.5 games behind the Lugnuts instead of being .5 games ahead of them. The Caps and the Lugnuts play again this afternoon @ 2:00 p.m. EDT.

Otherwise, Mary indexed yesterday after fulfilling my request for mushroom gravy topped potatoes and faux vegan meat-loaf for brunch. Once again, to use a baseball term, she hit it out of the park. Once brunch was over, I took the fur-children for individual walks so that Mary could get to work. STWD and I were doing fine on our way to The Bookman, until we rounded the corner and a band was just coming to life right outside the door of The Bookman to help celebrate Independent Bookstore Day.

That was bad enough, but after I literally dragged the intrepid weather dog into the store, when we rounded the bend, the largest Husky I've ever seen greeted us. Fortunately, the Husky was well-behaved and I was able to hold Sugar in check. We exited the back door to avoid another episode with the band. Misfortune piled on misfortune as the roofers were still hard at work on the new roof of the Episcopal church near the PE. The nail-guns the roofers were using sounded like firecrackers to Sugar and we ran all the way home. Let's just say that Sugar was not happy and leave it at that.

We have a chilly 34° as our current temperature according to the NWS and my own DTWS. Later today, after the sun rises @ 6:41 a.m. and long before it sets @ 8:43 p.m., the forecast calls for a high temperature of 49° under sunny skies. Monday, the high is forecast to reach 61° while Tuesday's high is supposed to reach 65°, both under sunny or mostly-sunny skies. It looks like it may be time to break out my summer uniform for good. However, the forecast also calls for temperatures to fall into the upper 50s by Thursday, with a 90% chance for T-storms on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Today, I'm hoping for grits for breakfast and then Mary can get back to work and hopefully finish that index. I'll have to edit it for submission if she does. Otherwise, reading is on tap for me. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:30 a.m. in "The City."

What a strange day it was yesterday. I did exactly what I'd planned to do, very little. I did a small amount of yard-work on the PE after walking with STWD, but that was a very short-lived phenomenon. However, no indoor chores, no cooking, and certainly nothing that required using brawn versus brain. I spent about one-hour playing with the girls and more time reading between meals.

We have a current temperature of 41° that is eerily the same from both the NWS and my DTWS. That's very unusual and probably more coincidental than scientific. Later today, the forecast from the NWS calls for a high temperature of 48° under sunny skies. They are also forecasting an 80% chance for T-storms next Wednesday and Thursday. I'll believe it when I see it. However, one scientific fact is that the sun will rise this morning @ 6 :42 before setting @ 8:42.

I didn't see the morning passage of the train heading south yesterday. I was outside when it was heading north @ 12:35 p.m. with locomotive's 2019 and 2025 towing a string of nine CHCs. It seems that the trains are now back to a three times per week schedule.

Baseball was another day of low-scoring games yesterday. The 13 - 10 Cubs eked out a win over the 16 - 11 Brewers on the strength of a great pitching performance by Yu Darvish, who didn't get the decision, and some fielding gaffes by the Brewers. Kris Bryant may return from his beaning today, but Cubs' manager Joe Maddon is unsure. He said in a press conference that there is no specific timetable, but that he wanted to see Bryant get back on the proverbial horse, and soon. The Cubs and the Brewers return to Wrigley Field today @ 2:20 p.m. EDT.

The 10 - 14 Tigers dropped another game to the 7 - 19 Orioles behind a sloppy pitching performance by Mike Fiers. The best news from the Tigers is that in spite of a 22 inning run drought, they are hitting the ball well and putting it into play. Yeah, that's the way the game is played. As the immortal and late football coach of the UCLA Bruins, Henry Russell ("Red") Sanders was quoted as saying in 1950, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." The Tigers are in Baltimore @ Camden Yards tonight for a game @ 7:05 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox have hit a rough patch. They are scoring runs inconsistently while their pitching is also inconsistent. That leads to losses more often than not. The 19 - 6 Sox fell to the 11 - 11 Tampa Bay Rays yesterday, 3 - 4. Those two teams try again today @ 4:05 p.m. in Fenway Park

The 13 - 7  Caps had a nice night as they defeated the 14 - 7 and MWL East leading Lansing Lugnuts, 7 - 4. That finds the Caps 1/2 game in back of the Lugnuts as the Caps once again try to reclaim first-place @ the Fifth/Third Ballpark today @ 4:00 p.m.

I got another chapter highlighted early yesterday morning for the upcoming project. I sandwiched that around watching a Sea Hunt rerun.

Today, I'll return to those thrilling days of yesterday and continue my baseball watching while Mary indexes. I know that she'll be watching TV news for the morning hours too. I took Ginger down for an early morning out @ 2:00 a.m. While I was downstairs, I found Mary asleep in the La-Z-Boy with an old X-Files rerun blasting. I wish I could sleep like that. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, Ir is just past 3:30 a.m. in "The City."

It was actually a great day in baseball yesterday, even though the Tigers lost by one run. Michael Fulmer hurled a near perfect game with all of his pitches working as he notched nine "K"s before being relieved in his nearly perfect game effort. His replacement, Alex Wilson, gave up the winning run to the 16 - 10 Pirates in the top of the ninth, after which the  10 - 12 Tigers failed to plate any of the runners that had loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth. Oh well, the Tigers move on to face the 6 - 19 Orioles @ 7:05 p.m. EDT.

The  12 - 10 Cubs also got a great pitching effort from Kyle Hendricks as he tossed a gem against the 16 - 10 Brewers to win the game 1 - 0. While he received little run support, the only rune he needed came on a late home-run off the bat of the other Kyle, Kyle Schwarber, As I noted in my description of the Tigers' game, the only way to win a one-run game is to pitch a near perfect game and give up no runs when your team isn't scoring. The Cubs welcome the Brewers to the Friendly Confines again today @ 2:20 p.m. EDT.

My beloved 19 - 5 Red Sox, still the best record in MLB™, beat the 14 - 10 Bluejays yesterday, 5 - 4. The three-run home-run off the bat of former Tiger J.D. Martinez provided the winning margin. In addition, a great catch by Martinez kept the Bluejays at bay. The Tigers move on to Baltimore to face the 6 - 19 Orioles tonight @ 7:05 p.m. EDT.

The 12 - 6, 2nd place in the MWL East Caps, had a good game yesterday as they defeated the Lake County, OH Captains, 8 - 3. The Caps come home tonight for a game against the 13 - 6, 1st place in the MWL East, Lansing, MI Lugnuts @ 6:00 p.m. EDT, in an attempt to erase their .5 game deficit and move back into 1st place.

No train spotting yesterday, however, I was very productive around the PE. I did the indoor chores, worked in the vast gardens, where I did some weeding along with planting our new dahlia, some petunias, I think, along with some flowers whose name escapes me in yet another mostaccioli moment. Mary can remind me later this morning. Wait, I just remembered, they are Gerber daisies. At any rate, all that effort wore me out and I retired early. I have to remember that I am not as young as I used to be, as if my yak wasn't enough of a reminder.

We have a current temperature of 47° per the NWS, while my own DTWS with its FPMS is reporting 54°. The high today is supposed to reach 52° per that same NWS, which has also forecast a 30% chance for rain in the p.m. hours. We'll see. It is very windy outside the WW right now.

Otherwise, we walked the fur-children to The Bookman, which by the by, is no longer for sale. One of the younger current ownership partners will be taking over the reins from the retiring partners. All good for STWD and her biscuit Jones.

Today, I plan to do nothing other than read, sit, and watch/listen to baseball. Mary will be working on the index. I'll do some highlighting now, but that's about the extent of my contribution for today.

The sun will rise in a few hours @ 6:44 a.m. and set later @ 8:41 p.m. Ciao.

Thursday, April 26, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:30 a.m. in "The City."

Amazingly enough, that good weather we have been having here in West, Michigan and specifically in the Tri-Cities area, is over until at least next Monday. We have a current temperature of 39° per the NWS, or 41°, according to my DTWS. Either way, we will see the overnight low drop down to 35° before we rebound all the way up to today's mostly sunny high temperature of 51°.

Meteorologist Bill Steffens of WOOD Radio/TV mentioned that there is slight chance of frost tonight, We'll see temperatures of 45°,  47°, and 48° for the next three days, until Monday's high reaches 61°. However, while the temperature will reach 64° next Tuesday, we won't see the 60° mark for many more days in the early part of May. Enough already. The sun will rise @ 6:43 a.m. and set later @ 8:40p.m.

For the most part, baseball was a tough view yesterday. The Cubs' bats once again went into the deep-freezer as the now 11 - 10 Cubs fell to the 13 - 9 Indians, 1 - 4. Jon Lester pitched well enough, but with the Cubs only scoring one lone run, he would have had to throw a perfect game for the win. The Cubs return to the Friendly Confines for a game tonight against the Brewers @ 7:05 p.m. against the 10 - 9 Brewers, weather permitting.

The 10 - 12 Tigers followed the advice of the late Cubs' great, Ernie Banks yesterday, as they played two, winning the first game in a come-back effort against the 13 - 11 Pirates 13 - 10, in a game that saw the Tigers crash four home-runs. Unfortunately their bats fell asleep in game two, as they could not support losing pitcher Matthew Boyd and lost to the Pirates, 3 - 8. The Tigers and the Pirates play again this afternoon @ 12:36 p.m. So far this year, the Tigers have been rained out seven times.

My beloved 18 - 5 Red Sox righted the ship yesterday as they defeated the 14 - 9 Bluejays in Toronto, 4 - 3. Mookie Bets belted two home-runs in the win. The Tigers and the Bluejays play again tonight @ 7:07 p.m.

The 11 - 6 Caps tumbled out of first place in the MWL East, as they lost to the 10 - 8 Lake County, OH Captains, 3 - 6. The Caps and the Captains play again today @ 12:00 p.m.

I was successful in the kitchen yesterday as my vegan faux meatloaf turned out very tasty. The texture is more like a roast beest, but the flavor is definitely that of a meatloaf. It should be good for sandwiches and similar uses. I pronounce it a keeper.

I worked a semi-side project for the latest index yesterday, as I highlighted the many tiny, and I emphasize tiny, numbers that refer to the end-notes in this book. I now have to highlight the book for the usual things. I will start the first part of the book in a while.

Otherwise, we took a walk to The Bookman with the fur-children yesterday and looked at some mulch for the vast PE. We are having a service do the installation to save my baking yak.

I am still enjoying my latest novel along with starting that non-fiction book for our book club. Mary will continue the current index. Ciao.

Wednesday, April 25, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 6:00 a.m. in "The City."

A short weather report this morning. We have a current temperature of 46° under partly cloudy skies. The high temperature today, according to the forecast from the NWS is 52°. also under partly cloudy skies. We will stay in the upper 40s and low 50s until next Monday, when we will have a forecast high of 63° under sunny skies. The sun will rise shortly @ 6:47 a.m. and set much later tonight @ 8:39 p.m.

Baseball yesterday was filled with rain-outs. The 9 - 11 Tigers game against the 12- 10 Pirates was rained out and they will try again this afternoon @ 4:05 p.m.

The 11 - 9 Cubs trounced the 12 - 9 Indians last night, 10 - 3, on the strength of two home runs off the bat of Kyle Schwarber and in spite of the absence of Kris Bryant, who was/is still recovering from the effects of that bean-ball in the last game. The Cubs take on the Indians tonight @ 6:10 p.m.

My beloved 17 - 5 Red Sox took it on the chin from the 14 - 8 Bluejays, 3 - 4 in 10 innings. The Sox have now dropped several games in a row following their strong start this season. Both teams play again tonight in Toronto @ 7:07 p.m.

The 11 - 4 Caps were also rained out in Ohio against the 8 - 8 Captains, but the Caps remain atop the MWL East. Those two teams are scheduled to try again tonight @ 5:00 p.m.

Yesterday. Mary spent some time organizing the next book for my highlighting pleasure. She still has more work to do on that, plus more indexing on the current project.

I made it to my orthopedist appointment yesterday and that went very well. Two more injections to go.

We got out and picked up some flowers for the vast gardens of the PE and also did some light grocery shopping.

While we were at the grocery store, Mary picked up a new rose for our "Flower Room." I took a picture with our old camera and I'll include that here.

I'm hoping that future photos will be much clearer. However, a single rose, like a single snowflake, is unique and beautiful.
Today, I plan to be in the kitchen and do some vegan cooking, a recipe I found for vegan Faux Meatloaf. The recipe requires some mixing, baking, and basting, but I am up for the challenge.

Mary will continue to work after we walk the fur-children. I also plan to finish my current book and get started on the next book for our book club project, which is a book that has been turned into a movie or TV show. I have chosen All the President's Men, by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. For those of you too young to remember, this is the story of the break-in  @ the DNC Headquarters at the Watergate office building that brought down the presidency of Richard Nixon. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may bee. It is just past 3:30 a.m. in "The City."

I have just one-half of a trainspotting report. That's because I was out and about when the afternoon run came through on the RSTL. However, it was great to see/hear that EMD GP 38-2 locomotive #2019 has once again been partnered with a running mate, locomotive #2025. Sorry, but so far I cannot find any additional information about this engine. But I digress. In tow were 14 CHCs, and 11 DBTCs.

Not much was happening in my sports world yesterday. The only team that I follow that did play was the 11 - 4 West Michigan WhiteCaps. Alas, they lost to the 8 - 8 Lake County, OH Captains, 1 - 2. We'll get again tomorrow, weather permitting, @ 6:30 p.m.

Since I am now on the topic of weather, our current temperature is 55° under dark skies. Later today, after the sun rises @ 6:48 a.m. and long before it sets@ 8:37 p.m., the high temperature is forecast by the NWS to reach 61° with a 40% chance of showers in the evening.

We had an absolutely gorgeous day yesterday. Depending on where you were, the temperatures ranged from the low 70s to the 80s. Sadly, that is not meant to last as that same NWS is forecasting 51° on Wednesday. That will be followed by the 40s and 50s, with a short foray into the lower 60s on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Mary and I did get into the gardens of the PE yesterday afternoon, but that appears to be a short-lived phenomenon based on the weather forecasts. Oh well, we also need some serious work on the lawns of the PE, both front and back, as last summer's hot, dry, and arid conditions took a major toll on those lawns.

When I got up earlier this morning, I dove into another of my hobbies, sorting through the rolls of nickles that we got at the bank the other day. I found about one dozen out of 40, but I think that's pretty good.

We finally took the plunge. We traveled to the Camera Shop in Muskegon and purchased a "Real" camera with several interchangeable lenses. This is not a point and shoot camera, no, this is a camera capable of closeups, telephoto shots, and wide-angle pictures. Now all we have to do is learn how to use it. Mary is hoping to get photos of flowers, various kitchen endeavors, and butterflies in closeup.
I am hoping to get detailed pictures of the various U.S. Coast Guard ships later this summer and also of the ships that ply the channel going to and from the docks in Ferrysburg on a regular basis, along with the locomotives and rail-cars that traverse the nearby MMRR tracks. In addition, we hope to get some shots of the various sky phenomena that periodically occur around her. Also, when we travel to a racetrack, some pictures of the cars should be in order. Fortunately, there are classes available for us at the store where we purchased the camera to make this a reality.

Kudos to Justin at The Camera Store for his guidance. Yes, he is a seller, but he is also one with the knowledge that helped us to navigate the labyrinth that is part and parcel to buying a camera.

Otherwise, Mary tried a new recipe for vegan dirty rice for our brunch and it is another keeper. Naturally, she made changes, as she is wont to do, but that just enhances the experience for both of us. Mary has more work to do on the current index, while I have an appointment at the orthopedist for my third of give knee injections. Ciao.

Monday, April 23, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:30 a.m. in "The City."

I plan to make this as brief as possible so that I can go to the media room and watch old black and white reruns of 1950s TV shows.  Last night, I came upstairs to watch Quigley Down Under, starring Tom Selleck, with a bowl of popcorn.

Yesterday's weather was terrific! The sun was shining, the temperature was in the lower 60s, and that meant it was good day to take the fur-children for a walk and so, we did. STWD, as the matriarch of the fur-clan, had all she could do to make it the five or six blocks that we traveled, whereas Ginger, being the teenager that she is, was still ready to go.

We have a current temperature of between 41° and 43° under partly cloudy skies. Later today, the high temperature forecast from the NWS is for 68°! However, don't get too excited, because we will not see 60° again for several more days and then more 40s and 50s. Enough already! The sun will rise today @ 6:50 a.m. and set @ 8:36 p.m.

Mary made what has become one of my favorite breakfast treats, a casserole of Tater-Tots™ with scrambled tofu, mushrooms, onions and vegan cheese. Dinner was, of course, @ our favorite watering hole.

Since it was such a nice day, Mary finished more indexing, printed out the next book, and then we walked to our favorite watering hole. I reminded Mary that everybody and their best friend would also have that idea, and I was right. However, we scored the last available table before returning home. All together, I made it nearly 6,000 steps between the tow outings and I feel good about that.

In between, I did some indoor chores and made some vegan sausages.

Sports news yesterday was mixed.

The 10 - 9 Cubs started out string against the 12 - 11 Rockies in Colorado. Kris Bryant was hit by a 96 mph fastball to the brim of his batting helmet which knocked him out of the game, but early indications are that he did not get a concussion. The Cubs are off today before traveling to face the 11 - 8 Indians on Tuesday evening @ 6:10 p.m. EDT.

The 9 - 11 Tigers surrendered a game that they should have won to the 5 0 14 Royals as the Tigers'
bullpen once again imploded and gave up runs that the Tigers couldn't match. The Tigers are also off today before traveling to meet the Pirates @ 7:05 EDT.

My beloved 17 - 4 Red Sox dropped a second game to the 11 - 11 Oakland As, 1 - 4. The Sox' bats just couldn't get going and so their great start has hit a snag. Here's hoping that when the Sox get to Toronto for Tuesday night's game against the Blur Jays, that the rest will do them some good.

The 11 - 3 Caps eked out a win over the 3 - 11 Great Lakes Loons, 2 - 1. That keeps the Caps atop the MWL East as they travel to meet the Lake County, OH Captains tonight @ 6:05 p.m.

Today, I have no specific plans. Mary has work to do. I may do some yard work while I enjoy the great outdoors of West, MI with the fur-children. Ciao.

Friday, April 20, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 10:30 p.m. in "The City."

I just couldn't wait. I was ready to blog and I had the time as I listened to the Cubs' game in preparation for listening to my beloved Red Sox. That being said, I guess it is logical to begin with the somewhat abbreviated sports report of today/tonight.

The 8 - 8 Cubs with Kyle Hendricks on the mound in their first trip to Colorado to face the 11 - 9 Rockies are up 12 - 4 as the Rockies at bat in the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Schwarber drove one over the wall to put icing on the cake as the Cubs batted around in the top of the inning. The top of the Cubs' batting order and their big boppers are feasting on Rockies pitching. The Cubs and the Rockies play again tomorrow night @ 7:10 p.m., with Yu Darvish taking the mound.

My beloved Red Sox sport a MLB best 16 - 2 record as they take the field later tonight @ 10:05 p.m. against the 9 - 10 Oakland As. I just took a quick glance, and the Sox are currently tied @ three, with theSox @ bat. The Sox play again tomorrow night @ 9:05 p.m.

The 8 - 9 Tigers took 10 innings, but with the aid of a walk-off home run from the bat of JaCoby Jones, they defeated the 3 - 14 Kansas City Royals, 3 - 2. The Tigers are moving on up as long as they can play teams like the Orioles and the Royals. The Tigers once again face the Royals @ Comerica Park @ 1:10 tomorrow afternoon.

The 9 - 3 Caps are still on a roll as they completed their game tonight in the MWL East with a 5 - 4 win over the 3 - 9 Great Lakes Loons. That gives the Caps sole possession of 1st place with a one game lead over the Dayton Dragons. The Caps and the Loons play tomorrow afternoon @ 2:05 p.m.

A great day for Ginger and I to do some trainspotting today. At 8:34 a.m., EMD GP 38-2 locomotive #2019, shown here, was seen heading south.

That locomotive was towing 15 CHCs, two DBTCs, and five DWTCs. Later in the early afternoon, Ginger and I got quite the surprise as we espied that same locomotive heading north with another locomotive in tandem. However, this was not the old familiar #2057. No, it was an entirely new locomotive, at least to us, #2025. As of now, I cannot find any information about her. I can only surmise that she is new to the stable, but that she looks very much like # 2019 and #2057. At any rate, in tow were 24 CHCs, and one DBTC.

Mary and I took some pictures around the PE that included our new Cubs Whirligig that now hangs from the eaves of our garage. I also took some pictures of the fading snow and the reemerging flowers too.

A nice juxtaposition against the fading snow cover.

The snow on the deck is hanging in there, but like the Wicked Witch of the North, it is melting.

These flowers are called Glory of the Snow and they were snow covered just three days ago. They are also showing up in the vast lawns of the PE.

Quite a change from a few short days ago.

I finally resolved my cell phone issue by having the carrier install a new SIM card in my old flip-phone and transferring my number back to that phone. I need a new battery, but that is on order and will be here Monday.

We traveled to The Mall to pick up new shorts for my summer uniform. Maybe not tomorrow, and maybe not the next day, but soon, I'll be wearing them.

We stopped @ Stan's on the way home. When we got here, Mary decided it was time to try a new recipe for dinner. Her choice? Vegan Mongolian Soy Curls over rice. This is a new recipe that turned out so good, that Mary already has plans to add it to her personal cookbook. I have to agree. its a keeper.

Today's weather was very nice. We made it to 52° under sunny skies, just enough of a tease for me to want spring and my summer uniform even more. Tomorrow, the high will reach 51°, or more, and by Sunday, the high is expected to reach 59°! However, those highs will not last as we drop back into the upper 40s and low 50s for several more days. The sun will rise @ 6:53 a.m. and set later @ 8:34 p.m.

I have my Irish Jam session tomorrow afternoon while Mary awaits the carpet repairman. He has to come over and fix the snag caused by Ginger's bling a few weeks ago. Mary can get to work on the index too. I am still reading my latest book and still liking it. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 6:00 a.m. in "The City."

Good news, all of my baseball teams won yesterday.

The 8 - 8 Cubs defeated the 10 - 8 Cardinals in Wrigley field yesterday, 8 - 5, with some timely hitting and some solid pitching by Jon Lester. Javier Baez looked good near the top of the batting order as he stroked a triple in the bottom of the first. The Cubs now depart on a West Coast road trip and make their first stop in Colorado against the Rockies tonight @ 7:40 p.m.

The  7 - 9 Tigers looked good compared to the woeful 5 - 14 Orioles as the Tigers won the game, 13 - 8. However, we know what often happens when the Tigers face a strong team. The Tigers welcome the Royals to Comerica Park today @ 1:10 p.m. for a makeup game.

My beloved 16 - 2 Red Sox continued their successful West Coast road trip as they handily defeated the 13 - 6 Angels, 8 - 2. That win by the Sox gives them the best record in Major League Baseball and also the Sox' best start since 1987! The Sox move to Oakland to play the 9 - 10 "A"s tonight @ 10:05 p.m.

The 8 - 3 Caps were also victorious as they defeated the 6 - 8 Bowling Green Hot Rods last night, 7 - 3. That win keeps the Caps tied with the Dayton Dragons atop the MWL East. The Caps host the 3 - 8 Great Lakes Loons tonight @ 6:05 p.m.

Yesterday afternoon was a pain in the ... We/me are trying to get that replacement cell phone and it is turning out to be a royal pain. I want a simple phone that has long battery life, and that seems to be an impossibility. Maybe we'll try again today.

The current temperature is 30° as we strive to reach today's high of 47° under sunny skies. The long-range forecast from the NWS shows temperatures hovering in the low 50s until early May. We are seeing the snow melt, albeit slowly, but I/we want spring.

Otherwise, not much is happening. Baseball is still life and I am finished with my highlighting. Mary has her work to do, but she feels as though it will go well.

The sun will rise shortly @ 6:54 a.m. and set later @ 8:33 p.m. Ciao.

Thursday, April 19, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:00 a.m. in "The City."

Not much happened yesterday. I returned the book I was reading because it was strikingly similar to The Nightingale. It was a nice story, but I felt as though I had been there and done that. In that book's stead, I started another book entitled Robicheaux, by James Lee Burke. So far, I am liking this one.

We did go out to run some errands late yesterday and accomplished all that we had planned in addition to buying some new flowers for Mary's "Flower Room." However, it turns out that I will have to contact the manufacturer of my current cellphone for a replacement, which takes forever to boot up and the battery charge doesn't last very long. One more thing that I don't want to do.

Sports news yesterday was .500. The 7 - 8 Cubs once again had their game against the 10 - 7 Cardinals called due to inclement weather. That makes it two out of three scheduled games. As of now, Wednesday's game has been rescheduled for today.

The 6 - 9 Tigers game was a seesaw affair against the 5 - 13 Orioles as the Tigers needed another home run from Miggy, it was his 35th birthday, and a home run, his first of the season, from catcher John Hicks. That was before the Orioles tied the game and before a walk-off home run off the bat of Dixon Machado, only the second of his career, sealed the deal in the bottom of the ninth. The Tigers and the Orioles are scheduled to play again today @ 1:20 a.m

My beloved 15 - 2 Red Sox are having a great West Coast road trip, as they once again hammered the 13 - 5 Angels, this time, 9 - 0. Sox Pitcher Rick Porcello is now 4 - 0 after hurling 6 strong innings and the Sox' bats are continuing to stay hot. The Sox and the Angels play again tonight @ 10:07 p.m.

The 7 - 3 Caps lost to the 6 - 7 Bowling Green Hot Rods, 2 - 6. That loss ties the Caps with Mary's MWL East favorite, the Dayton Dragons. The Caps and the Hot Rods are scheduled to play again tonight @ 6:35 p.m.

We have a current temperature of 34° as we try to reach today's high of 47 sunny degrees. Some melting began yesterday and we hope to see that continue. Still, it will only be in the low 50s by Saturday and we will bounce around up and down in the low 50s and upper 40s for several more days according to the forecast from the NWS. The sun will rise today @ 6:56 a.m. and set @ 8:31 p.m.

We have no specific plans for today. Indexing activities mostly, and that's about it. Ciao.

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City."

It is nice to look out the WW and not see any precipitation falling, not rain, not snow, not sleet, nada. However, by later tonight, the NWS is forecasting a 70% chance for showers. That should melt away a lot of the snow that is clogging our lives of late. Thursday and Friday, the forecast is for highs in the upper 40s and the skies should be sunny. Right now, we have a current temperature of 33° under dark skies. Later today, after the sun rises @ 6:58 a.m. and long before it sets on a cloudy/rainy evening @ 8:30 p.m., the high is forecast to reach 46°.

Sports news yesterday was interesting. The 7 - 8 Cubs lost to the 10 - 7 Cardinals in windy, chilly, and wintry Wrigley Field. Javier Baez had a hot bat, but the Cubs still lost, 3 - 5. The Cubs and the Cardinals play today @ 2:20 p.m. EDT.

The 5 - 9 Tigers dropped the 5 - 12 Orioles 4 - 2 last night. Neither team looked good. Still, there is hope for the future of the Tigers, isn't there? Those two teams play again today @ 1:10 p.m. EDT

My beloved 14 - 2 Red Sox dispatched the 13 - 4 LA Angels last night, 10 - 1, on the strength of great pitching by David Price over Shohei Otana, who has been the talk of this young season. Jackie Bradley Jr, Brock Holt, and Rafael Devers each hit a home run to go with three, count em, three, home runs by Mookie Betts upon his return to the lineup. The Sox and the Angels play again tonight on the West Coast @ 10:07 p.m.

The Caps were once again postponed by inclement rain here in West, MI. Will they ever play again?

I spotted the afternoon train yesterday as locomotive # 2019 was heading north @ 3:00 p.m.towing 22 CHCs, 12 DBTCs, one DWTC, and one GTC. All the cars were loaded based upon the shaking of the manse. I spied the end of the train heading south @ 10:47 a.m., when I was out for my orthopedist appointment. However, that's all I have to say about that.

Later in the afternoon, I found my way to the new podiatrist and the experience was terrific. Great care and an attentive doctor and staff. I get to go back every nine weeks. In between appointments, I finally managed to change the strings on Abigael and Blue.

I was downstairs earlier to empty the dishwasher, rewash some of the dishes that didn't get clean, and also make some Coleslaw for future meals. Since I went to bed @ 9:00 p.m. last night, I was ready to get up and blog and do more highlighting.

Mary is still working on the chunking, I think, of the current index. I am planning to read more of my latest novel, The Room on Rue Amelie, by Kristin Harmel, whom I thought was the same author who wrote a great book that Mary and I read for ouir book club, The Nightingale. However that book was written by Kristin Hannah. Very similar names, very similar styles and subject matter. Amazing in both cases. I recommend either to readers of this genre of fiction.

Today, not much on tap. More highlighting, more indexing, more retirement. Ciao.

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 6:30 a.m. in "The City."

We have a current temperature of 30° as we rise towards today's high of 36° under cloudy skies. A light snow fell overnight that added to the travel times this morning as people hopefully adjusted their travel times for safety. The sun is due to rise this morning @ 6:59 a.m. and set later this evening @ 8:29 p.m. There is a scant chance of additional precipitation of only 20%. As the week progresses, the daily high temperatures will continue to rise towards the 50s by Sunday. However, the highs will stay in the low 50s for an extended period of time after that.

By way of information, I took some pictures around the PE of the snowy conditions that are in existence here and in much of the upper part of the nation right now.

Sad to say, the gardens of the PE are snow-covered right now.

As is the front porch

And the deck
No sports news from yesterday, as the only baseball game of note, my beloved Red Sox, were postponed by the weather in Boston. All of my teams return to action today or tonight.

Speaking of Boston, the women's Boston Marathon was won by a woman from Charlevoix, MI,  Desiree Linden, the first U.S. winner sine 1986. Her time was 2:39:53 in conditions that were not much better than we are currently experiencing here in Michigan.

We got up late, I highlighted, finished my novel, traveled to Spring Lake to have my glasses adjusted, again, and then stopped for some groceries before finishing up at Stans. Mary rebooted her computer, did some indexing and then we were off on our errands

The only trainspotting was a truck that belongs to a private contractor that is tasked with checking the rails for proper spacing etc.

I never got around to changing the strings on the girls, although I received the new ones yesterday. Maybe today.

Later today, I am off to the second appointment of five at the orthopedist for my knees. I'll be 2/5 of the way there after today. I am also going to a new podiatrist later this afternoon for my quarterly checkup. No concerns at this time. Ciao.

Monday, April 16, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:00 a.m. in "The City."

I should be able to follow the KISS formula for this one, since we didn't get up until noon yesterday and we didn't do anything other than have some nachos for brunch and a late dinner at the favorite watering hole. In between, Mary worked on the index and I did some TV watching of the only baseball game of note, my beloved Red Sox, along with some reading. I'll get back to the Sox in a bit.

That snowstorm that dumped 30" inches of new snow on parts of the country yesterday, mostly spared us here in the Tri-Cities area. We got perhaps two inches of heavy wet snow that required the assistance of both of our neighbors to remove from the sidewalks in front of the manse and our shared driveway. Even our neighbor, Ron, who has a self--propelled snowblower, had to push his machine to make it through. While snow is not all that uncommon in our area in April, the cold temperatures are.

We have a current temperature of 33° as we head for today's high of 36° with a 50% chance of an additional one-inch of additional snowfall. However, there is good weather news on the horizon. By Wednesday, the nighttime temperatures are not forecast to fall below freezing anymore. By this coming Sunday, the forecast from the NWS is for temperatures to reach the 50s and never fall below that any time soon. We'll take it! The sun will rise today @ 7:01 a.m. and set @ 8:28 p.m.

Sports news for yesterday is easy, as not much happened. The 7 - 7 Cubs were postponed in their game against the 8 - 6 Braves due to inclement weather. The Cubs next opponent, the 9 - 7 St. Louis Cardinals, come to town for a night game on Tuesday @ 7:05 p.m. EDT.

The 4 - 9 Tigers had both the rescheduled game from Saturday and the regular game against the 7 - 7 Yankees that was scheduled for yesterday, postponed due to that weather. The Tigers are expecting their next opponent, the 5 - 10 Orioles, on Tuesday @ 6:40 p.m. EDT.

The 6 - 2 Caps were also postponed in their game against the 6 - 3 Lansing Lugnuts yesterday due to that same weather. The Caps welcome the 5 - 6 Bowling Green Hot Rods to the Fifth/Third Ballpark on Tuesday evening @ 6:35 p.m. EDT.

Otherwise, it was s tough fight to get the fur-children out for their business trips yesterday. STWD finally had to give it up, while Ginger was somewhat more amenable to being outside. Either way, they would have stayed inside if they could have.

Today, I'll do more reading, more highlighting/commenting, and perhaps get to changing the strings on a couple of the girls. Mary will continue indexing and also reading of the book she has finally been able to get past the first tedious pages. Otherwise, well watch the snow melt. Ciao.

Sunday, April 15, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 3:00 a.m. in "The City."

I got up around 2:00 a.m., as I often do, and Ginger was ready to go out. However, Mary had been watching TV downstairs so I arrived as she was trying to persuade Ginger to do something other than stare into the teeth of a wind that at time was gusting into the 40 mph range! In addition, the Winter Weather Warning for West, Michigan for ice and snow accumulation that was issued by the NWS from noon yesterday until noon today has come to pass. While the accumulation isn't much, it is mostly ice and very slippery. Our deck is as slippery as a politician's tongue. STWD lived up to her moniker and predicted that she didn't want to go out when Ginger did. She had to be coaxed/convinced, to say the least.

There was a report of a rollover accident near Coopersville, east of GH, that involved a firetruck and four firefighters responding to a vehicular accident. All the firefighters were transported to the hospital with non-threatening injuries after the firetruck rolled over when it slid on the icy rural roads.

The current temperature is 29° trying for a high of 36°, as we head for the sunrise @ 7:02 a.m. and well before the sun sets @ 8:27 p.m. Unless you are a hospital worker or public safety worker, you should not be on the road in the West, Michigan area this morning. Many church services and other activities have been canceled for this morning.

Speaking of weather cancellations, the Tigers and the Caps were postponed yesterday. In the case of the 4 - 9 Tigers game in Detroit, it was against the 7 - 7 Yankees. Those two teams are planning to play a split doubleheader today beginning @ 1:10 p.m. Yeah, when elephants fly.

The 6 - 2 Caps game against the 6 - 3 Lansing Lug Nuts, was also canceled due to 'Inclement Weather." Those teams are scheduled to play today @ 1:05 p.m. Sure they will, just watch out for flying elephants.

The 7 - 7 Cubs game against the 8 - 6 Braves yesterday was one for the highlight reel. Played in frigid temperatures, with snow and sleet falling, the Cubs were down 10 - 2 at one point. But a raucous 8th inning that included 13 hitters for the Cubs, three hits, five walks, and two hit batters produced a 14 - 10 victory for the Cubbies. Those two teams are scheduled to play again today. This is the only visit for the Braves to Chicago this year, so they had to get the game in yesterday along with today's game set for 2:20 p.m. EDT.

My beloved 12 - 2 Red Sox against the 5 - 10 Orioles game was on cruise-control yesterday as Hanley Ramirez returned from his injury and continued to tear the cover off the ball. Unfortunately, right-fielder, Mookie Betts, was injured in a close play at the plate. He has a foot injury that will sideline him, hopefully for only a  for a couple of games. The Sox and the Orioles are scheduled to play today @ 1:05 p.m. EDT.

Have you heard, there is a massive egg recall that involves an "Abundance of caution", according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration? Nearly three million eggs, yes, I wrote that correctly, three million eggs, have been recalled due to a "Potential for salmonella." Any wonder why we should all be vegan? If you knew how many chickens lived, you would understand part of the motivation for Mary and me to go vegan. Let's just say, salmonella is nothing to fool with.

Speaking of going vegan, Mary and I combined yesterday to try another recipe for non-meat, faux meatballs. The flavor is excellent, in fact we had some for dinner, but the texture isn't as good as our original recipe. Oh well, you have to try new things.

Today, we plan to stay in and out of the weather. This is April 15, and it is spring, but much of the upper part of the United States is experiencing wintry conditions. The front that moved through here is heading east, threatening the baseball games to be played on the east coast, notably that game between the beloved and the Orioles.

I've requested grits for breakfast, but I think Mary has to break out the bag of regular grits today in order to satisfy my request. She does have some older bread that could become French toast instead. A game-time decision. Otherwise, it is time for her to get down to working on the latest indexing project. I am highlighting and commenting ferociously for my part. Ciao.

Saturday, April 14, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:30 a.m. in "The City."

As predicted by the NWS in GR, there is a Winter Storm Watch in effect from noon today until noon tomorrow. Strong winds and ice-buildup that will cause trees limbs to fall and possible power outages are possible along with hazardous driving conditions. The current temperature is 37° as the winds continue to build. The NWS is forecasting the high for today to reach 41°, but I know what those winds will do to the wind-chill factor.

Those winds along with the icy conditions caused the sponsors to cancel the annual Lubber Cup due to what is being called a "Weather Trifecta." That means strong winds, cold temperatures combined to make the conditions too hazardous for the rowers. Said coach John Bancheri of the Grand Valley State Rowing Club, "We can row in the rain, we can row in the cold, but now we're talking 30s on Saturday with a cold, driving rain." He called it the , "Trifecta of misery." Winds of 20 - 25 mph with gusts exceeding 40 mph posed a serious safety risk to the athletes. The sun will rise @7:04 a.m. and set @ 8:26 p.m.

We got up late yesterday, well really, Mary and the fur-children got up late, I got up a bit earlier, and then we had grilled-cheese and tomato sandwiches with Coleslaw in honor of Grilled Cheese Day. STWD and I walked to The Bookman and Sugar got her ritual treat while I got the Grand Haven Tribune. Mary and Ginger walked around the block just before the rains set in, which would have soaked Ginger for hours.

Somewhere in all of that excitement, Ginger and I did some trainspotting and we saw/heard locomotive #2019 heading south @ 8:30 a.m., leading a long line of empty cars that included; 11 CHCs, many graffiti covered, 10 DBTCs, and one DWTC.

Later, @ 12:27 p.m., we saw/heard that same locomotive heading north towing 10 DBTCs, three DWTCs, and three CHCs, all loaded.

Sports news yesterday was mostly not good.

The now 6 - 7 Cubs fell to the 8 - 5 Braves, 0 - 4. Yu Darvish balked and was never the same after that. All four runs came after the meltdown caused by his anxiety over that pitch. The Cubs and the Braves are scheduled to play again today @ 2:20 p.m. EDT.

The 4 - 9 Tigers were once again outclassed by the 7 - 7 Yankees as they fell to those Yankees, 6 - 8. Those teams play again toxay @ 1:10p.m. EDT.

My beloved 11- 2 Red Sox did win over the 5 - 9 Orioles, 7 - 3. Those two teams play again today @ 1:05 p.m.

The 6 - 2 Caps are now tied for 1st in the MWL East with the South Bend Cubs after the Caps loss to the Lansing Lugnuts, 2 - 4. Those teams are scheduled to play tonight @ 6:05 p.m.

Otherwise, tomorrow, indoor chores that will keep us out of the inclement weather will predominate. Mary has to take out one of her knitting projects since she somehow lost track of her stitch count along the way. Ciao.

Friday, April 13, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 8:00 a.m. in "The City."

Let's keep this one short, as the sun already rose @ 7:06 a.m. and it will be setting tonight @ 8:25 p.m. In between there is a 90% chance for rain and the current temperature of 41°, that feels like 33°, will give way to today's forecast high of 46°. Tomorrow, there is a 100% chance for rain with the wind blowing at a rate of 27mph!

The 6 - 6 Cubs fared poorly yesterday against the 9 - 3 Pirates as the Cubs fell, 1 - 6. I think their bats are still in AZ. The Cubs welcome the 7 - 5 Braves to the Friendly Confines, which have not been all that friendly of late, when Yu Darvish makes his Wrigley Field debut @ 2:20 p.m. EDT.

The 4 - 8 Tigers, well they look like the Tigers we were expecting, as they dropped another game to the 8 - 5 Indians, 3 - 9. Today, the Tigers host the Yankees @ 7:10 p.m.

My beloved 10 - 2 Red Sox, behind a stellar pitching performance by former Tiger Rick Porcello and sandwiched around a 45 minute rain delay, defeated the 6 - 7 Yankees, 6 - 3. Rookie manager Alex Cora's Sox are hoping that the injury to Xander Bogaerts is not prolonged and that the injury to the wrist of Hanley Ramirez when he was hit by a pitch in yesterday's game, will not be long term concerns. The Sox face the 5 - 8 Orioles tonight @ 7:10 p.m.

The 6 - 1 Caps are still on a roll, as they defeated the 2 - 6 Great Lakes Loons in an afternoon game yesterday, 4 - 3. The Caps welcome the 5 - 3 Lansing Lugnuts to Fifth/Third Ballpark tonight @ 7:05 p.m.

We had a great day yesterday. We walked with the fur-children to the Bakers Wife in downtown GH to pick up a loaf of Polish rye bread that is a good rival for the Rosen's Rye Bread that is famous in Chicago. When coupled with the vegan pastrami that I'd made the day before, the sandwiches that Mary made for dinner were terrific. In between, we traveled to Hemlock Crossing County Park for that previously mentioned Wildflower Walk. Unfortunately, the cold spring weather has stymied the emergence of many of the wildflowers in West, Michigan this year. We'll have to revisit the park over the next weeks as the weather hopefully warms up and the flowers can be seen in all their glory.

All told, I logged about three miles, 6,000 steps, on my pedometer. For me, that's an achievement, since I couldn't walk much at all for a long time. Today, the rain may preclude much outdoor activity.

Otherwise, I have indoor chores to do, more highlighting, and perhaps a visit to the kitchen. Ciao.

Thursday, April 12, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 2:30 a.m. in "The City."

It is raining. I don't care what the NWS predicted for yesterday during the daylight hours, the rain arrived tonight/this morning. However, the rain is scheduled to mostly end by 7:00 a.m. We have plans to go to Hemlock Crossing County Park later today to take what has been billed as a "Wildflower Walk", but the trails may be a bit on the muddy side. With my somewhat limited walking ability due to my not yet ready for prime time knees and my steadily improving yak, I'll make a game-time decision. The sun will be rising today @ 7:08 a.m. and setting later @ 8:23 p.m.

Yesterday in baseball, the results were mixed. The 6 - 5 Cubs routed the now 8 - 3 Pirates, 13 - 5 t stay solidly in 2nd place in the NL Central, two games in back of the Pirates. Those two teams are scheduled to meet this afternoon @ 2:20 p.m. EDT.

My 9 - 2 1st place beloved Red Sox are human, as they fell to the 3rd place 6 - 6 Yankees, 7 - 10, in a battle of AL East rivals.. Firmer Tiger, J.D. Martinez, belted a Grand Slam, but it was not enough. A brawl and four ejections marred this strange game The Sox and the Indians play again tonight @ 6:10 p.m.

The 4 - 7 Tigers are mired in 3rd place in the AL Central, as they lost to the 7 - 5 Indians, 1 - 5. The Tigers and the Indians play again tonight @ 6:10 p.m. EDT.

The 4 - 1 Caps were once again victorious over the Great Lakes Loons, 5 - 1 in an Midwest League East match-up. The Caps are off to a hot start and they will play the Loons again today @ 12:00 p.m. EDT.

I spent a huge chunk of my day yesterday in the kitchen making baked tofu, vegan pastrami, and vegan bacon. All three items turned out great and Mary made vegan BLTs for dinner that were accompanied by my vegan Coleslaw, which also turned out great. We have plans to walk the fur-children and pick up some Polish rye bread this morning so that Mary can make vegan Reuben sandwiches. Once again, that walk is a game-time decision.

As an aside, Mary and I decided to go vegan four or five years ago due to our/my late in life realization that animals have a life too. My loyal readers may recall that my epiphany came when I saw a load of pigs on their way to the slaughterhouse. Those pigs reminded me of STWD, a lot, so the move was easier for me than you might expect. Plus, as we aren't getting any younger, so it was/is time to watch those numbers the doctors are always talking about, like LDL, HDL, and BP. So, no more red meat, which I really don't miss, no more dairy, which isn't good for most people as they get older, etc.

I almost forgot to mention that I have now started a collection of U.S. nickels starting with 1970 and ending with 2018 in the blank spaces. No particular reason except that nickels are plentiful, often received in change and are therefore easier to come by. Plus, quarters are heavier and more costly. For $5.00 I can fill my entire nickel book, whereas quarters are an investment of $25.00 for an equal number of coins. Yes, Adam, another cheap hobby unlike my addiction to my three guitars, a single ukulele, a lone banjitar, and a bodhran, and an electric piano. I don't have enough hobbies. Or do I?

I have plans to spend some time in my office/music room/weather center today after we return from our morning walk, playing with the girls. Mary has plans to do something, but I forget what, probably some crafty thing, all before our afternoon Wildflower Walk @ Hemlock Crossing County Park. Mary also printed out the latest indexing project, a short tome of 150 pages. She assures me that it is an interesting book that just awaits my highlighting and commentary. Ciao.

Wednesday, April 11, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 4:30 a.m. in "The City."

My DTWS with its FPMS, is showing a current temperature of nearly 40°, while the NWS is showing 38°. More importantly, the NWS has moved up their forecast and so we are anticipating 47° today, but those pesky showers and snow are also on the menu for today. Those aforementioned T-storms have now been pushed back until Friday and Saturday and in fact, the entire weekend looks rainy. By Sunday, much colder too. Today, the sun will rise @7:09 a.m. and set later @ 8:22 p.m.

Yesterday was not a good day for baseball fans of many stripes. My beloved 9 - 1 Red Sox crushed the 5 - 6, Yankees, 14 - 1 on the strength of great hitting and pitching, with Mookie Betts driving one over the Green Monster for a bases loaded home run, ie, a Grand Slam. Later today, those same two teams meet @ 7:10 p.m.

Sadly, the now 5 - 5 Cubs fell to the now 8 - 2 Pirates, 5 - 8. The Cubs are in a weak division in the NL Central, in 2nd place behind those same Pirates. Those same teams meet again tonight under the lights @ 8:05 p.m. EDT, with Jon Lester on the bump.

The 4 - 6 Tigers were just plain bad, again, as they fell to the 6 - 5 Indians, 1 - 2. The AL Central rivals meet again tonight in Cleveland @ 6:10 p.m.

The Caps fared better, defeating the Great Lakes Loons, 10 - 4 as the Caps once again meet the Loons tonight @ 6:35 p.m.

I saw the train go by heading north on the RSTL with locomotive #2019 towing 11 CHCs. five DBTCs, and six GTCs, I did not see the morning run.

I made it to my orthopedist appointment for my first of five knee injections. I also learned thate my right knee will be sore for a while after my recent fall, but no damage is apparent. I soloed while Mary took care of Ginger and STWD. The doctor was behind, but I still had a nice salad for lunch.

I came home and walked with STWD to The Bookman to pick up the Grand Haven Tribune and a biscuit and then we headed home. Later, Mary and I stopped in at JWs for libations and then we also came home for a light dinner of vegan sausages and the leftover stir-fry from the day before. I was ready for some baseball and that's when I watched the beloved succeed mightily and the Tigers fail miserably.  Then it was time for bed after a couple of naps in my chair. Did I mention that I am becoming a true Michigander as I wore shorts to the doctor.

Today, not much on tap. Perhaps I'll make that vegan pastrami and read more of my latest novel. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 5:30 a.m. in "The City."

I hadn't planned to get up, but sometimes the best laid plans etc.

Since I got up, the fur-children had to get up too, so I took them down and they did their duty. so to speak. While I was downstairs, I emptied the dishwasher to get the kitchen ready for another day. I don't mind emptying it because I dislike filling it even more.

Speaking of the kitchen, we had a nice stir-fry lunch yesterday that was started before my haircut when I chopped everything and then completed with the actual cooking after I returned. I was quite pleased with the results. Dinner was vegan sausages with Mary's cottage tofu and my homemade applesauce.

After we went to the store and had dinner, I got tired and headed up to watch some TV in the media room before I retired early. Maybe that's why I got up now, I seem to be able to sleep for only about six to seven hours in one stretch.

I have an appointment at the orthopedist today for the first of my five knee injections. Mary assures me that she will stay in the waiting room as she doesn't much care for the actual procedure. I can't say that I do either, but it sure helps when I walk. I need to be sure to ask the doctor to check my sore knee more thoroughly because it is still not feeling right That may be because I am expecting a quicker recovery, as I always do. My yak is feeling better, but it is not where it will be in a few more weeks.

Speaking of the doctor's visit, since we'll be at the hospital, we'll be sure to enjoy a nice salad bar lunch in the hospital's cafeteria. We have determined that of the four hospitals that we have visited in the area, that our own NOCH (North Ottawa Community Hospital) has the best salad bar.

We were going to walk to the hospital, but my gimpy knee and the weather are likely to preclude that plan.

With regard to the weather, we have a current temperature of 31° under mostly clear skies. in fact, the sky is so clear that I saw several planets in the southern sky, most likely Mars, Venus, or Mercury. It's been a long time since I took astronomy in college, so I am working from a faded memory.

We anticipate that today's high temperature will be 41° under sunny skies. I'd like to think that the forecast of 58° this coming Friday is the harbinger of good things to come. However, the T-storms that will accompany that high will rain out any outdoor activities before we see temperatures plunge back into the 30s and 40s for about 10 more days. Enough already. The sun will rise today @ 7:11 a.m. and set later this evening @ 8:21 p.m.

Sports news yesterday was weather dependent too. The 5 - 4 Cubs were snowed out in what was supposed to be their home opener yesterday against the 7 - 2 Pirates. That opener has been rescheduled for today @ 2:20 p.m. EDT with newly acquired pitcher Tyler Chatwood on the mound. Here's hoping that this is another one of Theo Epstein's finds from the pitching scrap heap.

My beloved 8 - 1 Red Sox had the day off yesterday. Today, they face the 5 - 5 Yankees in Fenway Park without Xander Bogaerts who was placed on the 10 day disabled list following a freak injury over the weekend when he slid down the dugout steps chasing an errant throw. He can be replaced on defense, but he was swinging a hot bat that will be hard to replace.

The 4 - 5 Tigers didn't fare so well yesterday as they fell to the now 5 - 5 Cleveland Indians 0 - 2. The Tigers swept that other team from Chicago over the weekend, but that was a short-lived high. The Tigers and the Indians play tonight @ 6:30 p.m. EDT.

The 4 - 1 West Michigan WhiteCaps defeated the 2 - 3 Great Lakes Loons 7 - 3 last night. Those same teams play again today @ 12:00 p.m. EDT.

Still no news regarding the Grand River Loggers.

Today, a bit of kitchen magic along with that appointment at the orthopedist and more reading for Mary, hopefully of a book more to her liking. She has rejected two books in a row that didn't strike her fancy. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just pst 4:15 a.m. in "The City."

Well, that much ballyhooed Winter Weather Advisory looks like it might just skip over us. A quick glance out the WW shows me that a light snow is trying to fall, but so far, it has produced little accumulation. The current temperature is 34° as we struggle to reach today's high of 35°. We are still struggling to get out of the 30s and 40s. We're on track to reach the 50s by Friday, April 13. That's just a one-day occurrence before we drop back into the 40s for a few more days. The long range forecast from the NWS shows that we'll finally break into the 50s and 60s by the 21st of this month.

What can you do, this is Michigan and spring is always unpredictable. What can be accurately predicted is that the sun will rise this morning @ 7:18 a.m. and set later today @ 8:16 p.m.

Yesterday, we got up around noon and then had a leisurely lunch. We mostly sat around until it was time to walk with the fur-children to the veterinarians and get Ginger's bordetella booster, AKA a booster for kennel cough. While Ginger doesn't go to a kennel for boarding, she does go to daycare and interacts with other dogs there. So, she needs to be protected. STWD went along for the walk, but like me, her limit is that distance there and back. I hope to improve, but Sugar is getting older, so we're not expecting much. Of course, I'm getting older too, so my expectations for myself are limited by my own mind.

Later, we traveled to Health Hutt and The Bookman and then settled in at JWs to watch the balance of the game between my beloved Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays. It took the 6 - 1 Sox 12 innings to finish the Rays, but they loaded the bases in the bottom of the 12th and then Hanley Ramirez drove in the winning run for the 3 - 2 victory. The Sox are off today before resuming their series against the Rays on Saturday @ 1:05 p.m.

The Cubs bats came to life in a game against the Brewers yesterday as the 3 - 3 Cubs defeated the 4 - 3 Brewers, 8 - 0. Those two teams play again tonight @ 7:10 p.m.

The 2 - 4 Tigers were also victorious in extra innings, with their 9 - 7 win over that 3 - 3 other team from Chicago, 9 - 7. The Tigers are off today before they too resume their current series against that other team Saturday afternoon @ 2:00 p.m.

The 1 - 0  Caps opened their season last night at the Fifth/Third Ballpark with a 6 - 2 win over the 0 - 1 South Bend Cubs. This two teams resume play tonight @ 6:35 p.m., weather permitting.

Today, we will do more sitting, and more reading before we head to our rescheduled book club meeting @ 3:00 p.m. Otherwise, we have no plans. Ciao.

Thursday, April 5, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 1:45 a.m. in "The City."

A look out the WW and the front window when I was downstairs with Ginger, confirms what the NWS is reporting, it's cold outside. In fact, that Winter Weather Advisory of yesterday produced about one inch of snow and ice that also caused numerous vehicular accidents on the roads. Surprise, winter has not let go of West Michigan, yet.

We have a current temperature of 30° as we drop towards tonight's overnight low of 26°. Later today, we'll rebound to a sweltering high of 36° under partly cloudy skies. The sun will rise @ 7:20 a.m. and set later @ 8:15 p.m. A small bit of good news though, those promised 50° temperatures may arrive by April 12, 2018!. However, the high will only reach 45° three days later before we are permanently in the 50s the next day. Sigh.

Weather update!!! as of 4:00 a.m. this morning. The NWS has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Ottawa, County, MI from 10:00 p.m. tonight until 11:00 a.m. Friday with snow accumulations possible of one to three inches of slushy, wet snow. Most of the accumulation will occur between 10:00 p.m. tonight through 5:00 a.m. Friday. Once again, SIGH!

Our book club was cancelled yesterday due to the weather and rescheduled until Friday afternoon.

Yesterday, Mary made a great brunch of pasta that used some of our leftovers such as the cannellini beans I used to make sausages the other day. Later, she used the last of the vegan corned beef that I made to whip up some sandwiches. Now I'll have to get back into the kitchen.

Otherwise, not much is happening. I'm listening to George Noory on his show, Coast to Coast AM. He is discussing one of his usual topics, psychology, specifically, the human condition in the third millennium, with his guest, Professor Steven Pinker, who believes that life, health, prosperity, and safety are on the rise in the world today thanks to reason and science. That might be true for many places, but I'm not convinced about the US.

I am reading another fiction novel, The Rising Sea, by Graham Brown writing under the auspices of Clive Cussler. Interesting, so far.

The Cubs did not play yesterday and given their recent problems with slumber in their lumber, that may be a good thing. The team is lodged in 4th place in the NL Central with a record of 2 - 3. My beloved Red Sox, with their AL East leading record of 5 - 1, had the day off before they play the Tampa Bay Rays today @ 2:05 p.m. Mercifully, the Tigers were postponed in Detroit due to that previously mentioned inclement weather. They are mired in 5th place in the AL Central.

The White Caps, AKA the Caps, are scheduled to open later today in GR against the South Bend Cubs @ 6:35 p.m. I like going to their games, but I'll wait until the weather improves there.

Still no new information on the Grand River Loggers and their inaugural season here in GH. They had signed an agreement to play at Sluka Field here, but there is no news about that either.

So once again, that looks like enough for one day. Ciao.

Tuesday, April 3, 2018

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 11:00 p.m. in "The City.

Let's see if I can follow the KISS formula once again.

I did a lot of work in the kitchen today. I made cookies, baked some tofu, and a loaf of cheddar-beer bread. The cookies are fine, the bread is great, but the tofu is kind of bland, owing to the lack of spices in the coating. Oh well, it is edible for a quick snack.

We have a current temperature of 34° as we head down to an overnight low of 29° before we rebound all the way up to 32° as our high tomorrow. In addition, there is a winter weather advisory in effect for tomorrow. Spring is trying hard to skip its arrival.

The sun will rise tomorrow @ 7:21 a.m. and set later @ 8:14 p.m.

My beloved Red Sox took extra innings, but they defeated the Rays, 4 - 2 in 13 innings. That gives the Sox an overall record of 5 - 1 in the AL East. The Cubs were postponed due to the weather. The Tigers were shutout by the Royals, 0 - 1 and fell to 1 - 4 on the year.

Ginger and I train spotted again today and @ 8:55 a.m. we spied locomotive #2019 heading south towing one CHC, 13 DBTCs, one DWTC, one DRTC (Dreaded Red Tank Car) and one GTC.

At 2:15 p.m., that same locomotive was seen heading north, towing nine CHCs, eight DBTCs, seven DWTCs, one of those with an anti-corrosive green stripe around its mid-section and one GTC.

Tomorrow, we will be going to our history book club meeting in the late afternoon and then hunkering down for the night. Otherwise, we have nothing on our schedule. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, It is just past 2:30 a.m. in "The City."

What kind of a day was yesterday? Well, we went to the orthopedist and I got the all clear for my yak to resume regular activities, with the cautionary note, "Within reason!" I also used the services of the doctor to check the knee that I fell on the other day which made walking difficult. Apparently, what I did didn't cause any serious damage, as the doctor performed some basic structural tests and determined that I had no unusual swelling and no pain that indicated a long term problem such as a tear in my meniscus. Whew, I dodged another bullet.

In other news, I finished my latest novel and I liked it a lot. I tried to tell Mary about the plot-line, but it really isn't a genre that she enjoys. This from a woman who loves apocalyptic movies and Sci-Fi series like The X-Files. Go figure.

We have a current temperature of 38° according to my DTWS. That corresponds with the temperature being reported by the NWS. Right about now, a winter weather advisory is in effect until 11:00 a.m. for several of the lake-shore counties. Snow and ice will produce some accumulation. According to the NWS, we will have to wait until Friday, the 13th of this month, to get into the 50s. All of that is a long winded way of saying that spring has yet to spring here in West Michigan. The sun will rise later this morning @ 7:23 a.m. ans set later @ 8:13 p.m.

The Cubs fell below .500 @ 2 - 3 with an 0 - 1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. Those two teams play again tonight in Cincinnati @ 6:40 p.m. My beloved Red Sox upped their record to 4 - 1 with a 7 - 3 win over the Marlins. to stay atop the American League East. The Sox play the Marlins again tonight @ 6:10 p.m. The Tigers finally won a game yesterday with a 6 - 1 win over the equally porr Royals. This is expected to be a rebuilding year for the Tigers. Those teams play again today @ 1:10 p.m.

I hope to get into the kitchen today to make cookies for our book club meeting on Wednesday afternoon. I'll also be making another loaf of cheddar cheese laced quick bread too. And, if all goes well, I'll try to make some baked tofu while the oven is on. I'll be busy.

Mary made some vegan faux meatballs yesterday that taste good, but she has some ideas for ways to make them better. She generally experiments and her efforts evolve and get better with each effort. She tried a recipe for some homemade ranch dressing that I would describe as bland. I like the previous version much better. Me, I'm not good at making changes to a recipe. I try to get it right and not make any changes after that.

So that looks like enough for one day. Ciao.
