Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 5:30 a.m. in "The City."

We have a current temperature of 43° according to the NWS, and 44° according to my own DTWS (Desktop Weather Station). Either way, it is chilly out there. Today, the NWS is forecasting a high of 52° with a 60% chance for showers in the late afternoon/evening. Tomorrow, the forecast calls for T-storms with a 100% probability. STWD will not be happy. The sun will rise in less than two hours @ 6:40 a.m. and set later @ 8:44 p.m.

Baseball was mostly quiet yesterday, as I await tonight's games. The 14 - 12, 2nd place in the NL Central Cubs are in Seattle to play the Mariners. The Cubs will send LHP Cole Hamels with his 3 - 0 record, against the Mariners' RHP Felix Hernandez and his own record of 1 - 2 @ 10:10 p.m. EDT.

The Cub's may activate SS Addison Russell for Friday's game against the currently 1st place Cardinals with their 18 - 10 record in the NLC, and a 3 game lead over the Cubs. A decision about Russell's playing time and/or a shift of Javier Baez back to his regular 2nd base slot will be made by Cubs' manager, Joe Maddon then. Baez has been on fire @ 2nd, so...

My beloved 12 - 17, 4th place in the AL East Red Sox, showed some serious offensive power last night as they defeated the 14 - 17, 4th place in the AL West Oakland As, 9 - 4. The Sox used a 6 run 3rd inning barrage to finish off the As. Tonight, J.D. Martinez is scheduled to come off the DL tonight and the Sox could use his powerful bat to continue their climb back to their rightful place 1st in the ALE. Hopefully, Martinez' back spasms are in the past. The Sox send RHP Rick Porcello to the mound to try for his 2nd win against 3 losses @ 7:10 p.m. EDT, while the As counter with RHP Aaron Brooks, who is 2 - 2.

The 12 - 14, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers will send RHP Tyler Ross, 1 - 1, to the mound against the 16 - 12 1st place in the NL East Phillies and their own RHP Vince Velasquez, 1 - 0, @ 7:05 p.m. Speculation is rampant about the future of this year's Tigers' #1 draft choice, RHP Casey Mize, following his AA debut no-hitter. Is he ready? Or, do the Tigers with their already weakened pitching staff wait for more results. Or, will they trade LHP Matthew Boyd, or... Stay tuned.

The 10 - 12, 7th place in the MWL East Caps, are in Clinton, IA @ 7:30 P.M., tonight to face the 12 - 10 in the MWL West Lumberkings.

After we bid adieu to Mary's brother, Ed yesterday morning, we ran some errands in the rain and got some things we wanted and didn't get other things at the various big-box stores we visited. Otherwise, John began painting the three latest rooms that needed a color change in the manse. He expects to be done by week's end. I hope so.

We picked up the fur-children from camp and they were just as glad to see us as we were to see them. Unfortunately, Ginger had a small "accident" in the dining room after her dinner. Oh well, they say when you adopt a dog you should be prepared for them to eat the carpet, chew the furniture, have "accidents", etc. So....

Today, I have my final P/T appointment for my surgically repaired shoulder. I will have to work on a more complete rehab on my own, as more professional P/T wouldn't help a great deal. Ben, my therapist, has done wonders with my rehab and I couldn't be any more thankful. Now, it's up to me, that and about three more months.

I am thinking about going to the movies today, but what I'd rally like to do is to do nothing for one day. Tomorrow, I have an apple pie to bake for our book club meeting, so I 'd like some downtime. Just saying. The movie I want to see, the highly touted and critically acclaimed, Avengers: Endgame, will be around for many more weeks, so there is no rush. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 12:00 a.m. in "The City."

We had a terrific day yesterday, as we first visited the Grand Ravines Lodge/Park and then later attended the concert by Mary Fahl @ Seven Steps Up.  I took a lot of pictures, so I'll include some of them here.

A Labrador retriever doing just that in the Grand River.
Mary and her brother, Ed, in deep conversation on the deck of the lodge.
A symbiotic relations ship between this vine and its host, the tree.
Looking straight up into the canopy.
One of many trails in the park.
Same here.
This large group made us glad we didn't join the Wildflower Walk.
Looking west downriver.
Industry in Allendale, MI
The Grand Rapids water intake on the shores of the "Big Lake."
Somewhere along the road home.
When we got home, I took this pic of some of the daffodils in our vast gardens. Mary cut some for her flower room.

St Francis and his animals watch over the gardens in all seasons.
Later, Mary prepared a nice dinner of large pasta shells with vegan sauce and my vegan Italian meatballs. Ed liked it too.

Later, we made that trip across the bridge to Spring Lake to see Mary Fahl in concert @ Seven Steps Up. Ms. Fahl performed her own songs, as well as those of others. She has a powerful voice and a great range that worked well in the acoustically perfect Seven Steps Up hall.

Here she is performing and singing.

She played a Gibson electric guitar,

And this Taylor acoustic guitar as she sang. She is an accomplished guitarist.
Like almost all singer/songwriters, Ms. Fahl had recordings for sale after the concert. Mary got an autographed copy of an EP Ms. Fahl had for sale. This one is a sample of her upcoming album of classical music as interpreted/recorded by Ms. Fahl.

Baseball news yesterday was mixed.

My beloved Red Sox fell to the Tampa Bay Rays, 2 - 5. LHP Chris Sale recorded 8 Ks and only gave up two earned runs, but he still took the loss, number 5, against no wins. He is improving? The Sox welcome the Oakland As to Fenway tonight @ 7:10 p.m.

The Tigers dropped another one to that other team from Chicago, 1 - 4. The Tigers' batters struck out 20 times!. The Tigers are in Philadelphia Tuesday night to face the Phillies @ 7:05 p.m.

The 2nd place Cubs took 15 innings and several pitchers to defeat the D'Backs, 6 - 5. The Cubs are next in Seattle to face the Mariners on Tuesday night @ 10:10 p.m. EDT.

The Caps triumphed over the Lake County, OH Captains yesterday, 5 - 0. The Caps are off until Tuesday when they travel to Clinton, IA to meet the Lumberkings @ 7:30 p.m.

The current temperature is 41° under clear skies. Today's high, after the sun rises @ 6:41 a.m. and long before it sets @ 8:43 p.m. will be 45° with a 100% chance for showers.

Ed will be departing later this morning as he travels to Illinois and then on to TX. We enjoyed having him with us for a few days. The fur-children have been at their doctor's for boarding and they look quite contented in one of the pictures that was texted to us.

We'll pick them up later today after we run some errands and we will be glad to have them home. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 5:00 a.m. in "The City."

Let's start with the weather. So far, the NWS has been completely wrong. Well, maybe not completely, just 99 99/100% wrong. We had a little light rain late last night, but the forecast for heavy, wet snow has yet to come to pass. The street outside the manse, per my look out the WW, is totally dry. Nary a flake is to be seen. That's not to say that it won't happen, we still have that Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 8:00 a.m. today, but if that snow is coming, it needs to get here soon.

We have a current temperature of 34° under fair skies and that will give way to either that snow, or a high temperature today of 52° under mostly-sunny skies. Which? Danged if I know. The sun will this rise this morning @ 6:42, and set 14 hours later @ 8:42 p.m.

We had a great day yesterday. We got up, fed the fur-children, had them do their duty, and then dropped them off at their doctor's office for two days of fun and frolic. I say that, because the vet techs who care for our girls texted us pix and with an update and the fur-children looked quite contented and in fine fettle. It does a parent's heart good to see that their fur-children are happy. Still, we miss them.

We made it to the matinee showing of Annie yesterday afternoon with Mary's brother, Ed. The play was not the Annie I was accustomed to, Annie Jr., suitable for all audiences. Rather it was the full version of Annie, suitable for all audiences. The Webster Theater in the Frauenthal Theater complex in Muskegon was easily accessible for Mary's brother and for us.

The cast endured some early glitches in the lighting as they kept on singing through the blackouts. The sets were what I always wanted our Cooper Middle School directors to employ, minimalist. Be that as it may, I enjoyed seeing the cast of mostly young people, ages 10 - 18, with a few adults thrown in for the scenes with President Roosevelt. They were energetic, enthusiastic, and totally entertaining. The theater was packed with parents and relatives and interested parties. We loved it!

In sports, the game between the 12 - 13, 3rd place inthe AL Central Tigers and that 10 - 14, 4th place in the AL Central other team from Chicago, was postponed due to snow. They hope to play today @ 2:10 p.m. when Tigers LHP Matthew Boyd, 2 - 1, takes the hill against RHP Reynaldo Lopez, 1 - 2 for that other team. A battle of equals?

My beloved, 11 - 16, 4th place in the AL East Red Sox fell to the 17 - 9, 1st place in the AL East Tampa Bay Rays, 1 - 2. The lone bright spot for the beloved was a long home run off the bat of Mookie Betts. The Sox seem to be in a feast or famine mode on offense when they take the field. Sigh. Today @ 1:05 p.m., the Sox try again when LHP Chris Sale, the "Ace" of the Sox' staff
@ 0 - 4, goes against the Rays actual Ace, RHP Tyler Glasnow, 4 - 0.

The 13 - 12, 3rd place in the NL Central Cubs had an offensive outburst after their Cub's $126 man, Yu Darvish, used 57 pitches to get through the first two innings before he settled down. He can throw the ball in the upper 90s, but it was only when he eased up and threw his breaking pitches that he began to record outs consistently. He got out of those early innings by sheer luck.

The D'Backs couldn't score any runs, their lone run came on a home-run off the Cubs' relief corps. 3rd baseman, David Bote, clobbered two massive home runs, en route to 5 RBIs, to power the Cubs' attack to their 9 - 1 win! Every Cubs' player contributed to the win. Today, the Cubs and the D'Backs go again as Cubs' LHP Jose Quintana, 3 - 1, goes against the D'Backs RHP Luke Weaver, 2 - 1 @ 4:10 p.m. EDT.

Ed and I may see part or all of those games this afternoon in the media room if we aren't at the Grand Ravines County Park for a visit, weather permitting.

Otherwise, we are off to Spring Lake's Seven Steps Up, for an evening concert @ 7:00 p.m that features singer/songwriter/actress, Mary Fahl. She is the former lead-singer for the October Project, an East Coast folk-rock/adult alternative band. She lives in the U.S. and is currently a solo performer. She credits Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell among her influences. I think you'll hear some of those ladies in this YouTube™ selection I've chosen as an example of Fahl's body of work, one song written by Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nprjAwB1ASw.

And in this Irish song, Dawning of the Day, as interpreted by Fahl.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRh3NL0lc68

Either way, I know we'll have a great time.

Mary will be in the kitchen making the meals today. We had a great dinner @ Don Luis last evening after the play. Otherwise, not much is on tap for today. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 5:00 a.m. in "The City."

I'm listening to Coast to Coast AM, and its guest host, Richard Syrett. He is a Canadian broadcaster who often subs for the regular host, George Noory. I just heard him play another of his Canadian themed segue songs, this one entitled, Let it Ride by Bachman Turner Overdrive, known to Mary and I from long-ago as The Macro Men, a name given to them by one of our first neighbors, Dave D. Enjoy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKSUQ9ANoOE

At any rate, a real blast from the past.

We have a current temperature of 38° under clear-skies. We also have a Small Craft Advisory in effect until 8:00 a.m. today. As the day wears on, we'll be under a Winter Weather Advisory starting @ 4:00 p.m. today and continuing until 8:00 a.m. Sunday. One to three inches of heavy, wet snow are in the forecast from the NWS, with the concomitant hazardous driving conditions and the possibility of power outages caused by that snow on tree branches that can bring down wires. Our high temperature today will reach 43° and of course, with showers in the afternoon that will turn to snow. The sun will rise later today @ 6:44 a.m. and set later @ 8:41 p.m.

Mary's brother, Ed, arrived last evening around 8:00 p.m. after visiting our downtown and Muskegon. He was tired from the long drive from the Chicago area where he was visiting friends. Later today, @ 2:00 p.m., we are planning to visit Muskegon again to see a play @ the Frauenthal Theater, followed by dinner @ Don Luis.

Tomorrow, we have a visit planned to the Ottawa County Parks System's Grand Ravines Park. We had hoped to do a Wildflower Walk and see the lodge there. Weather may alter those plans.

Sports news yesterday was once again mixed.

My beloved, 11 - 15, 4th place in the AL East Red Sox, were postponed by rain in their game against the 16 - 9, 1st place in the AL East Tampa Bay Rays.  The Sox and the Rays will try again today, @ 4:05 p.m. The starting pitcher for the Sox is scheduled to be LHP David Price, 1 - 1, versus RHP Charlie Morton, 2 - 0, for the Rays.

The 12 - 13, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers, were involved in a slug-fest against that 10 - 14, 4th place in the AL Central other team from Chicago. Miguel, Miggy, Cabrera has found his home-run stroke, but in a game in which he nearly hit for the cycle, it wasn't enough, as the Tigers lost, 11 - 12. Ouch. The Tigers also placed RHP Jordan Zimmermann on the IL with what has been diagnosed as a sprain of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament in his pitching elbow. He will be lost for at least seven days, and maybe longer. He joins two other Tigers' starters on the IL.That means that the already beleaguered Tigers' pitching staff is in deeper trouble. The starting pitcher for tonight's game against the Rays @ 7:05 p.m. has yet to be determined.

The 12 - 12, now 4th or tied for 3rd place in the NL Central Cubs, lost a game that they were never in, as RHP Kyle Hendricks, 1 - 4, couldn't seem to get anybody out and he was relieved by a newly called up from Triple A Iowa, RHP Dillon Maples. Maples has had two previous call-ups and he hopes to stick this time around. Tonight's game will start @ 8:10 p.m. EDT, as RHP Yu Darvish, 1 - 3, takes the mound against RHP Zack Godley, 1 - 1 for the 2nd place in the NL West D'Backs.

A couple of bright spots for the boyus in blue. Kris Bryant may have found his own hitting stroke, as he nailed a 2 run home-run. Albert Almora Jr. went four for four in last night's game.

The 9 - 11, 5th place in the MWL East Caps, fell to the 13 - 8, 1st place in the MWL East Lake County, OH Captains, 5 - 6 last night. Today's game begins @ 4:00 p.m.

So, that's about it for yesterday and today. We'll get up when the mood strikes us, feed and let the fur-children out, and then drop them off @ overnight camp, until Monday. Since we'll be in and out today and Sunday, it is easier for all. Ciao.

Friday, April 26, 2019

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 6:00 a.m. in "The City."

I got up around 4:00 a.m. and did my usual kitchen duties. Mary is good at loading the dishwasher and I don't mind emptying it, so a great division of duties.

Yesterday, we had both an interesting lunch around 12:00 p.m., and later, an equally interesting dinner. Lunch was Mary using up the contents of many small bowls from the refrigerator to make a burrito? I liked it..

Later, for dinner, Mary tried a recipe for baked cauliflower-cheese bread with marinara sauce that turned out more like a cauliflower casserole. The taste was great, but she believes that she didn't get enough of the water squeezed out of the cauliflower. Nonetheless, I liked the taste and with a bit of refinement, who knows?

We have a current temperature of 49° as a light rain continues to fall. I know of the rain because the view out the WW shows that the street and the rooftop of the manse are wet. That's like the local version of the weather rock. If it is wet, it's raining.

We anticipate a high temperature today of 56° with light rain throughout the day @ 90% and cloudy-skies. Tomorrow, Saturday, the chance for rain is down to 70% and that's in the evening. However, the high temperature will only reach 44°. The sun will rise soon  @ 6:45 a.m. and set later tonight @ 8:39 p.m. That's just before Mary's brother, Ed, is scheduled to arrive here for a visit.

Sports news yesterday was once again half and half. The 12 - 11, 3rd place in the NL Central Cubs, dropped a game in the standings following their loss to the 16 - 11, 1st in the NL West Dodgers, 1 - 2. LHP Jon Lester came off the IL and pitched well, but as is all too often the case, when he pitches, the offense struggles to score runs. The Cubs' lone run came off the bat of Alberto Almora Jr., who got his first dinger of the season. The Cubs are off to AZ to face the 15 - 11, 2nd place in the NL West, D'Backs, tonight @ 9:40 p.m., when RHP Kyle Hendricks gets another crack at the D'Backs.

My beloved, 11 - 15, 4th in the AL East Red Sox, took a game from the 12 - 12, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers, 7 -3. RHP Rick Porcello got his first win for the Sox against three losses. RHP, 0 - 4 Jordan Zimmermann took the loss. It looks like the Red Sox offense is starting to come alive, but this was against the Tigers, so... The Sox welcome the 16 - 9, 1st in the AL East, Tampa Bay Rays to Fenway Park tonight @ 7:10 p.m. No Sox pitcher has been announced for the game.

The Tigers are off to Chicago tonight to meet up with that 9 - 14, 4th place in the AL Central other team from Chicago @ 8:10 p.m. EDT. LHP Dan Norris, 1 - 0, goes for the Tigers as LHP Carlos Rodon, starts for that other team.

The 9 - 10, 6th in the MWL East Caps, won a wild one over the 12 - 8, 1st place in the MWL Lake County, OH, Captains, 10 - 9. Both teams go again tonight @ the Fifth/Third Ballpark, starting time, 6:35 p.m.

I finished those aforementioned pavers and vacuumed winter our of our Renegade yesterday. With the assistance of my trusty yak brace, I didn't hurt myself. Plus, I used my left arm to move those pavers and it feels none the worse for wear. I'll take that. On the other hand, Mary abused her own baking yak to do some gardening too. I suspect that she will feel it today. I'd like her to try a couple of ibuprofen to help in her own recovery, but she eschews most OTC drugs, so...

Today, we'll be staying out of the rain and drying the paws of the fur-children after they do their duty. I'll try to do more drawing, and reading. I want Mary to stay off of her feet too. We don't need two broken people in one household. Ciao.

Thursday, April 25, 2019

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 5:30 a.m. in "The City."

Let's keep this one short so that I can go to my chair and get some rest.

We have a current temperature of 41° under partly-cloudy skies. Later tonight, we have a 70% chance for showers. During the day today, the NWS has forecast high temperatures from 59° to 61°. Good enough for me. The sun will rise later @ 6:47 a.m. and set tonight @ 8:38 p.m. We're still wrestling with daily highs in the 40s to 50s and the spring rains are regularly in those forecasts.

Our vegetables survived last night's Frost Advisory. It was so nice outside yesterday that Mary and I did some yard work and installed that aforementioned dog deterring fencing around her rose garden. STWD and Ginger are not happy, but in spite of their desire to breach the fence, so far they have not. Here's hoping.

I also took a few moments to reposition some of the pavers in the center of our shared driveway near the garages. I have more to do, but I am doing my best Marshall and doing things a but at a time while wearing my yak brace.

There were two train runs on the RSTL yesterday. Both southbound and northbound runs involved MMRR locomotive #2019. At 9:54, I watched as three DBTCs and three DWTCs, passed by heading south. Later, @ 3:17 p.m., I again watched that locomotive pass by heading north, towing 15 DBTCs, two DWTCs, three GTCs, and one CHC.

Baseball news yesterday was once again half and half. The now 12 - 10, 2nd place in the NL Central Cubs, used two three run home runs in the 6th to notch a 7 - 6 win over the 15 - 11, 1st place in the NL West Dodgers. RHP Pedro Strop got the save in relief of Cole Hamels who pitched well, but didn't get the win. The boys in blue are now just two games in back of the front-running Cardinals. The Cubs and the Dodgers go today @ 2:20 p.m., as 1 - 0 LHP Jon Lester returns from the IL and takes the mound against the Dodgers 1 - 1 RHP Ross Stripling.

Over in the junior circuit, my beloved 10 - 15.  in the AL East Red Sox, rode the strong pitching of 2 - 2 LHP Eduardo Rodriguez and the bat of J.D. Martinez to an 11 - 4 victory over the 12 - 11, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers. Martinez hit one ball so hard, that it got stuck in a garage door in left-field near the green monster and was ruled a ground rule double as he netted three hits. Tonight @ 7:10 p.m., the Sox and the Tigers try to even up their series, as 0 - 3 RHP Rick Porcello goes for the Sox against the Tigers' Jordan Zimmermann and his own 0 - 3 record.

Sadly, the 8 - 10 in the MWL East Caps couldn't get the sweep over the 8 - 11 Great Lakes Loons, as the Loons crushed the Caps, 8 - 2. The Caps return home tonight @ 6:35 p.m. against12 - 7, 1st place in the MWL East  Lake County, OH Captains.

Otherwise, yesterday was a routine day, with an appointment @ the chiropractor, a day in the manse as I did some indoor chores, and those aforementioned outdoor chores in the cast gardens of the PE. The only time the car left the garage was so that Mary could travel to the nearby big-box home center for three additional sections of dog deterring fencing. We both think that the fence looks perfect.

I finished Calico Joe and started my non-fiction book about former Tigers star, Hank Greenberg. Calico Joe was great, and so far, the book about Hank Greenberg looks promising.

Today, I'll finish those pavers, move a couple of pots and clean the car a bit following a long and seemingly endless winter. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 5:00 a.m. in "The City."

Where do I begin, to tell the story of ... Oops, I was channeling once again. But that's okay, because I just finished reading an article about geniuses, of which I am definitely not one, who often exhibit a touch of craziness. The article pointed out that sometimes, a little crazy is good. So, perhaps there is a "method to my own madness", which in the case of the Romans, actually meant something more like inspiration or illumination, and so it was something to aspire to. I'll leave it to your kindly discretion to decide.

We have a current temperature of 36° which is accompanied by a Frost Advisory that will remain in effect until 8:00 a.m. this morning. If youi have houseplants or vegetables outside, you are good to go if they are under cover or otherwise protected. I believe that our veggies will be fine in their greenhouse home.

Today's high will reach 59° under mostly sunny skies. That's after the sun has risen @ 6:48 a.m. and long before it sets @ 8:37 p.m. The next chance for prolonged 60° plus high temperatures will be May 4th!

Baseball news yesterday was mixed, at least for me. The 11 - 10, 3rd in the NL Central Cubs, rode the fine pitching of 3 - 1, LHP Jose Quintana, to a 7 - 2 win over the 15 - 10, 1st place in the NL West Dodgers. Cubs' catcher, Willson Contreras, SS Javier Baez and others all contributed. The Cubs and the Dodgers go again tonight @ 8:05 p.m., when LHP Cole Hamels goes for his 4th win against no losses. As of now, Jon Lester is set to come off the IL and pith Thursday's game against the Dodgers.

Sadly, my beloved, now 9 - 15, 4th place in the AL East, Red Sox, fell to the now 12 - 10, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers, twice, 4 - 2, with RHP Spencer Turnbull getting the win, and RHP Hector Velasquez taking the loss for the Sox in game one, and 2 - 1, LHP Matthew Boyd getting the win for the Tigers, while RHP Colten Brewer took the loss for the Sox.

If there was any good news, it was that Sox' LHP Chris Sale struck out 10, but was lifted before he could lose again. The Tigers and the Sox go again tonight in Fenway @ 7:10 p.m. when 1 - 2, LHP Eduardo Rodriguez gets the start.

The 8 - 9 in the MWL East Caps, took a second one from the Great Lakes Loons, last night, 4 - 3. The Caps and the Loons go at it this afternoon @ 2:05 p.m.

My few hairs got cut yesterday and my P/T appointment went well. I have one more appointment next week and then I am free. As my mother-in-law, Eleanore, used to say, "Retirement is so busy." I literally run out of time each day to do all of the things that I want/need to do. Who knew?

I am nearly done with my Grisham baseball novel and I like it! I finished the Tuesday crossword from the Grand Haven Tribune in under 1/2 hour yesterday. Mary is considering ordering the USA Today to get a broader perspective on the day's news and which would also give me more crossword puzzles to work. Like I noted earlier, I may have to get up yesterday to get everything done.

Today, we plan to do some plantings in the vast gardens of the PE, erect a fence to keep STWD and Ginger out of Mary's rose garden, and then go to the chiropractor. Ciao.

Tuesday, April 23, 2019

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 2:30 a.m. in "The City."

I think the best place to start is with the weather, since it has a great impact on the news from the world of baseball.

We have a current temperature of 59° with a 17 mph wind blowing. I cannot give a Wind Chill Factor, because those are only available for outdoor temperatures below 50°. However, I can report that there is a light rain falling right now and that will continue until later this morning.

In addition, that 17 mph wind has caused another Small Craft Advisory for the "Big Lake" from now until 8:00 p.m. tonight. Small boats, boats without instruments, and inexperienced mariners are advised to stay off the lake. The overnight low is expected to fall to 45° before we recover to today's high temperature of 51°, quite a drop from the high temperature earlier today of nearly 80°! I liked being able to wear a T-shirt for one day. Sigh.

Let me get back to the world of Major-League Baseball. As you may recall, the 10 - 10, 4th place in the NL Central Cubs had the day off yesterday as they awaited the arrival of the 15 - 9, 1st place in the AL West Dodgers for tonight's game @ 8:05 p.m. EDT.  LHP Jose Quintana, currently with a record of 2 - 1, takes the ball and goes for his third win against that one loss.

Cubs' third-baseman, Kris Bryant, is still struggling at the plate, but he is reportedly healthy, so... However, unlike teammate, 1st baseman Anthony Rizzo, who is also off to a slow start, Bryant is traditionally a fast starter, whereas Rizzo has always been a slow-starter who comes around about May 1, so...

The 10 - 10. 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers were postponed by rain in their game against my beloved, 9 - 13, 4th place in the AL East, Red Sox. That game in Boston will be made up as part of a split schedule today, with the 1st game starting @ 1:10 p.m. as 1 - 1, LHP Matthew Boyd, goes against Red Sox "Ace", 0 - 4 LHP Chris Sale.

Later, the Tigers and the Sox play the second and regularly scheduled game of the day/night  @ 7:10 p.m., as the Sox send RHP Hector Velasquez to the mound to face the Tigers RHP, 0 - 2, Spencer Turnbull. Velasquez is filling the spot in the Sox' pitching rotation that has been vacated by RHP Nathan Eovaldi, who will be on the DL for four to six weeks as his pitching elbow recovers from surgery to remove "Floating Bodies" in his elbow.

The 7 - 9, 6th place in the MWL East Caps, took one from the 7 - 10, 7th place in the MWL East Great Lakes Loons last night, 5 - 1. The Caps and the Loons play again tonight @ 6:05 p.m.

I did some light yard-work in the vast PE yesterday, but I didn't overdo. I planted some grass seeds, watered them and now that light rain is giving an assist to my efforts. However, with the high temperatures once again dropping into the 50s, germination will be delayed.

In the afternoon while Mary went to the grocery store. apparently, that went well, I was reading my latest novel, Calico Joe, by novelist John Grisham, written in 2013. Grisham is best known for his legal thrillers, but this book is the story of Joe Castle, a rookie 1st baseman for the Cubs in the summer of 1973, who is called up from the Cubs' AA team to play 1st base, mid-season. I love it because the story is heavily sprinkled with references to Cub legends like Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santa, Ferguson Jenkins, Don Kessinger, etc. What more could a baseball fan want?

Castle hits the ball for power from both sides, runs the bases with abandon and plays the field with great aplomb. He takes the National League by storm until his short-lived Major-League™ career is ended by a bean-ball from Mets' pitcher Warren Tracey, a notorious head-hunter. His estranged son, Paul, now an adult, is trying to get Warren together with Joe to make amends over the bean-ball before Warren dies.

Once Mary returned home, we were off to the Social Security Administration in Muskegon to sort out what had gone wrong over the tax years 2016 and 2017. We had a very pleasant experience, as Tiffany punched keys on her computer and hopefully sorted out the problem. We'll know more in a few days.

We stopped @ Stan's in Spring Lake on the way home, where the nearly 80° temperatures had brought out the motorcyclists. Then it was time for home and a tasty dinner of leftover sauces that Mary pulled from the refrigerator and served over spaghetti noodles with a side of baked garlic bread.

I came up to the media room shortly thereafter and promptly fell asleep. I awoke @ 10:00 p.m. and then went to bed until around 1:00 a.m. When I awoke again, I went downstairs to find Mary asleep in the Lazy Boy. According to her emails, the fur-children had been out around 11:00 p.m. last night, but STWD is currently hiding in the upstairs bathroom to ward off the danger from the storm that the light rain is representing. She may be right, because the thunder is rumbling outside the WW right now.

Today, a haircut for me followed by P/T and then nothing. More reading, more art, more whatever. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you maybe, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 2:30 a.m. in "The City."

We took a long walk down to the waterfront with Ginger yesterday afternoon. I overdid it a bit, but more than two miles later, I felt good about my efforts. We took a lot of pix too. No real order, just random things that caught our eye.

On our way, these barren trees in Central Park caught my eye.
Like always, a playground, an empty park, or a dormant fountain call out to me.

It was Easter, bu these men had work to do in the downtown.

The channel was empty.

With the exception of this cruiser that was on its way back to Spring Lake.

Like us, lots of people were enjoying the waterfront on a warm, sunny, Sunday afternoon.

Lots of stores are closing in the downtown. Many, but not all, are being repurposed.

The Easter egg hunt that happened in Central Park on Saturday had some leftovers.

Several years ago, John and Deb visited and gave us this frog for the vast gardens of the PE.

Spring is springing in the vast gardens of the PE.

In sports, the now 10 - 10, 4th place in the NL Central Cubs, took a 2 - 1 squeaker from the 11 - 11, 3rd place in the NL West AZ D'Backs, to take 2/3 from the D'Backs in their weekend series. Javier Baez tripled in the bottom of the 9th, and David Bote singled to drive him home for the win. RHP Pedro Strop got the win in relief of starting pitcher, RHP Tyler Chatwood, who settled down quickly and pitched six scoreless innings in a spot start. The Cubs are off until Tuesday night @ 8:05 p.m. EDT, when they welcome the 15 - 9, 1st place in the NL West Dodgers to Wrigley Field as LHP Jose
Quintana takes the mound.

My beloved, 9 - 13, 4th place in the AL East Red Sox, swept the 14 - 8, 1st place in the AL East Tampa Bay Rays, with a 2 - 1 win in 10 innings yesterday. The Sox used a great pitching performance by LHP David Price to get to the win by reliever, LHP Marcus Waldon. The Sox get no rest as they are hosting the 10 - 10, 3rd place in the AL Central, Tigers tonight @ 7:10 p.m.

The Tigers got an excellent pitching performance from LHP Daniel Norris yesterday to win the game over that 8 - 12, 4th place in the AL Central, other team from Chicago, 4 - 3. Tonight's Tigers' game will find LHP Matthew Boyd on the mound for the Tigers and LHP Chris Sale taking the hill for the Sox.

The 6 - 9, last place in the MWL East Caps are on again tonight in Midland, MI, as they take the field against the Great Lakes Loons @ 6:05 p.m.

I had a great day in the kitchen yesterday, as I crafted a delicious stir-fry for brunch. While I was working, I assisted Mary in the preparation of our Easter dinner of hammish. Plus, I did those pesky indoor chores too. We also washed and stored our winter coats for another season too.

My stir-fry brunch of soy curls, water chestnuts, bean sprouts, julienned carrots, mushrooms, onions, molasses, and fresh-grated ginger root, served over rice.

Tasted even better than it looked, but generated more leftovers.
Meanwhile, Mary's Easter hammish was in the Crockpot™ for 6 1/2 hours, getting ready for dinner. In addition, Mary prepared a side-dish of candied sweet potatoes in her trusty cast-iron skillet, As she noted, you take a healthy vegetable and turn it into a not so healthy candied side-dish. So?

Dinner was the hammish with those candied sweet potatoes. A delicious repast.

Once again, even better tasting than it looks.
We have a current temperature if 58° under mostly-cloudy skies, as we drop to the overnight low of 53°. Today's high is forecast to reach 70° under mostly-cloudy skies, but that's 11° warmer than yesterday. Sadly, the high temperature on Tuesday will only be 49° with showers in the forecast. In fact, we will stay in the 50s for many more days before we reach a 60° high on May 1.
The sun will rise this morning@ 6:52 a.m. and set later @ 8:35 p.m.

We have no specific plans for today. I have to prune the rose bushes in the gardens and that's about it. I want to get back to my artistic endeavors too. Mary will be getting to sewing the musically-themed valances for my office/music room/weather center/artists nook, if all goes well. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City."

I had a great day at my Irish Jam Session yesterday. I played a lot and also sang a song, a typical Irish lament about the hardship and pain caused by leaving their beloved "Emerald Isle" and emigrating to America and the city of Chicago due to the potato famine that began in1847. This song was/is entitled, not surprisingly, City of Chicago. My version was finger-picked. Here is a version as performed by famous Irish singer/songwriter, Christy Moore. I think I favor Mr. Moore in many subtle and not so subtle ways. What say you?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvOcyRqNfBI

We have a current temperature of 43° under partly-cloudy skies. Today's high temperature, after the sun rises @ 6:53 a.m. and long before it sets @ 8:34 p.m., is forecast by the NWS to reach 63°. Monday's high may reach 69°! But then, on Tuesday, the high is forecast to reach 52°. Ouch. By the by, I have current personal experience with the current temperature, as I had both the fur-children out @ 3:39 a.m. ad I had to go fight our own personal "War of the Roses", as STWD insists on going out and getting the tether wrapped around at least one of Mary's rose bushes, sometimes two, she even gets wrapped around three on occasion. We've tried fencing her off with a short and not completely unattractive short fence, but she jumps anything that doesn't resemble a "Wall.". Sigh.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Ginger was asleep in her usual "Out of it" fashion when Mary came to bed. Unlike STWD and yours truly, when Ginger sleeps, she sleeps so soundly that you cannot wake her and she'd be no help to warn that a burglar was breaking in to the manse. If she's awake, delivery people, the letter carrier, and anyone walking on the sidewalk better watch out. That's why I had to let them both out @ 3:30 a.m. But, she is cute.

You just think she's awake.
Oh, we finally got our greenhouse out of its early spring location in the foyer and placed it outside to hopefully allow our seedlings to thrive.

Sports news yesterday was mostly unsatisfactory. The  now 9 - 10, 4th place in the NL Central Cubs returned to their losing ways, as they fell to the 11 - 10, 3rd place in the NL West, AZ D'Backs, 0 - 6. RHP and $126 man, Yu Darvish, "settled down" after he had served up some early back to back home runs to the D'Backs. You know, he closed the barn door after the horse had left the building. In addition, the Cubs' and their relief corps received more bad news, as last year's closer, RHP Brandon Morrow, experienced more trouble with his pitching arm and was shut down, again. Pedro Strop will continue in that role for the foreseeable future.

Starting LHP Jon Lester, continued the rehab for his injured hamstring with a simulated game yesterday. Cubs' manager, Joe Maddon, felt that Lester looked fine. Today will tell the tale. The Cubs and the D'Backs close out their series in a 2:20 p.m. EDT game later today as RHP Tyler Chatwood takes the ball.

My beloved, 8 - 13, fifth/last place in the AL East Red Sox, took their second game from the 14 - 7, 1st place in the AL East, Tampa Bay Rays, by a slim 6 - 5 margin. OF Andrew Benintendi hit his first major-league grand slam and got five RBIs. At the risk of jinxing the Sox, they go for a sweep today @ 2:10 p.m. when LHP David Price goes for his second win.

The 9 - 10, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers, were postponed due to rain against that other team from Chicago. They try again tonight @ 7:10 p.m. in Comerica Park, as LHP Dan Norris goes for his first win.

Likewise, the 6 - 9, tied for last place in the MWL East Caps, were rained out last night in South Bend, IN. They try again Monday night against the 7 - 9, 6th place in the MWL East Great Lakes Loons in Midland, MI. The Loons are an A level affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

I was outside yesterday morning with the fur-children, when I noticed that there was a butterfly. species unknown, in the flowers of the garden near our Havenhenge stone formation. So, I quickly grabbed our camera with Mary's macro lens and took some shots.

Nearly on top of Havenhenge.

By the flowers in the garden.
Later when I was jamming, Mary and Ginger took a walk down to the waterfront. She didn't stay long, as the temperature near the channel of the Grand River leading to the "Big Lake" was quite chilly. So, they returned to a more temperate Central Park for some reading. While at the waterfront, Mary took some pix with our camera.

The skies were blue and the water choppy.

Mary reports that there were just a few small boats on the water.
Today being Easter, many places of business in GH and the Tri-Cities area will be closed in observance of the Christian holiday. We'll be reading the newspaper, reading our respective non-fiction and novel books along with doing some work in the vast gardens of the PE. Perhaps we'll also be doing some crafty type things too. By the by, my early morning vegan Italian meatballs from yesterday turned out great, my best effort in a long time. We had some for dinner.

Otherwise, we will be watching baseball and going walkabout. Ciao.

Saturday, April 20, 2019

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 2:30 a.m. in "The City."

Don't tell Mary, but since I was downstairs to empty the dishwasher, I decided to make more of her favorite, vegan Italian meatballs. In my humble opinion., I got them right this time. I used part of our booty from our visit to Aldis™ yesterday, baby portabello mushrooms. The proof is in the taste, I hope.

We have a current temperature of  43° under clear skies. That will lead to today's high temperature of 63° under sunny skies! Good news, as I'll be walking to my monthly Irish Jam Session this afternoon @ 1:00 p.m. The sun will rise into those azure-blue skies @ 6:55 a.m. this morning and it will set later @ 8:32 p.m. We will continue with that Small Craft Advisory until 8:00 a.m. today.

Baseball news yesterday was 1/2 and 1/2. The now 9 - 9, 4th place in the NL Central Cubs, used the windy conditions @ Wrigley Field to help them achieve a 5 - 1 win over the 10 - 10, 3rd place in the NL West AZ D'Backs. RHP Kyle Hendricks was able to record 11 Ks before he departed and the Cubs' bullpen was able to hold the lead for the win. The Cubs and the D'Backs go again today @ 2:20 p.m., when RHP Yu Darvish goes for his 2nd win.

My beloved, 7 - 13, 5th/last place in the AL East Red Sox took a game from the 14 - 6, 1st place in the AL East Tampa Bay Rays in Tampa Bay, 6 - 4. Mookie Betts and Mitch Moreland went back to back in the win that was added to the totals of RHP Brandon Workman. We're moving on up? Later tonight, the Sox and the Rays go at it again @ 6:10 p.m., when RHP Rick Porcello tries to find the strike zone.

The 9 - 10, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers lost another one, this time to that 8 - 11, 4th place in the AL Central, other team from Chicago, 3 - 7. RHP Jordan Zimmermann was trying to paint the corners for the Tigers, but he felt that he was not given the benefit of the doubt by the home-plate umpire. That led to his 3rd loss. Tonight @ 6:10 p.m., the Tigers and that other team play again @ 6:10 p.m., when LHP Dan Norris ties for the win.

The 6 - 9, tied for last place in the MWL East White Caps, fell in South Bend to the 9 - 7, 3rd place TinCaps, 1 - 2. If this continues, the future for players on this A level affiliate of the Tigers looks dim.

A baseball fact is that only a small percentage of players ever get a cup of coffee in "The Show." Plus, many players struggle for years on poverty-level wages. Players that are not drafted have a very slim chance of ever playing for the bg money.

We ran some errands yesterday, one of which was a stop at the car dealer to get help with syncing our Smart Phone with our Jeep™ for navigation. We stopped @ and bought some things @ the nearby big-box home and garden center, traveled to one of the big-box arts and crafts stores in Muskegon to take advantage of a 50% top 60% off sale, and then stopped @ Stan's in Spring Lake. When we got home, I watched the end of the Cubs' game as Mary prepared a dinner of spaghetti roll casserole. I started the Red Sox game and I gave up on the Tigers when I could see where that game was going. Then I fell asleep after a satisfying dinner.

Oh, I am as usual listening to Coast to Coast AM, as guest host, Ian Punnet, discusses artificial intelligence, with his guest, Greg Keiser and the late-night audience. Since the topic was AI, Ian is using the efforts of the Alan Parson's Project as his segue music. Here is one of the songs he featured, Eye in the Sky from 1982, as found on YouTube™. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNiie_zmSr8

Today, not much to talk about. I'll enjoy my walk to the library, Mary will enjoy her walk-about around town, and the fur-children will enjoy the first really pleasant day in a long time. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation  and across the world. It is just past 4:00 a.m. in "The City."

No need to spend much time on the weather this morning. We have a current temperature of 41° that feels like 35° due to the 10 mph winds. Today's high is forecast to reach 55° under cloudy-skies this morning and with sunny-skies this afternoon. The sun will rise @ 6:56 a.m. and set later @ 8:31 p.m. In addition, the NWS has extended the Small Craft Advisory until 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. Four to six foot waves will be driven by 30 knot winds. As always, the "Big Lake" is angry in the spring and inexperienced sailors, small craft, and any vessel without instruments are strongly cautioned to stay off the water.

We had two train runs yesterday. The morning run on the RSTL occurred @ 9:38 a.m. and consisted of MMRR locomotive #2025 towing 11 CHCs and five DBTCs. Later, @ 2:15 p.m., while I was busy in the kitchen, my apprentice 1st class train-spotter, Mary, assisted by Ginger and recorded that the northbound run of that same locomotive passed by with three CHCs and one DBTC in tow.

I said I was busy in the kitchen because I was sauteing some sweet peppers and onions for storage and chopping vegetables for vegan Irish stew. I say Irish stew, because the addition of a full can of Guinness stout beer, brewed in Ireland, is one of the main ingredients. I say vegan, because there was no meat nor dairy products used in the recipe. Yes Virginia, no animals were harmed in the preparation of this recipe.

This stew is one of my favorites and has been memorialized in Mary's handcrafted cookbook. The stew was accompanied by slices of Mary's homemade bread with garlic and nutritional yeast on buttered bread, baked just right. Of course, I couldn't have stew without horseradish.

After I was done in the kitchen, I went upstairs to play with the girls and do some drawing, Mary decided to go walkabout to drop off a package at the UPS store, stop by the bank, tried to get, but failed, in her quest for frozen broccoli @ Health Hutt™ and stopped  in for an adult beverage and to try to save someone's finger @ JWs. And I thought I was busy.

Mary has seemingly reacquired her love of pleasure reading too. I think that much like when I was teaching and I didn't have a desire to read for pleasure, Mary's business of indexing books took away some of her love of pleasure reading that she'd always had. Just an opinion, and I'm sticking to it. Plus, rather than watching TV news, she has taken to listening to mood-music while she reads.

Oh, the 8 - 9. 4th place in the NL Central Cubs, and my beloved, 6 - 13, 5th/last place in the AL East Red Sox, return to action today/tonight, while yesterday, the 9 - 9, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers defeated that other team from Chicago in an afternoon game, 9 - 7. Sadly, that other team is 7 - 9 and in 4th place in that same division and thus they are not a true measure of the Tigers' abilities. That's in spite of the nine runs scored by the good guys in a rare day game. The Tigers return to night games @ Comerica Park tonight @ 7:10 p.m. when RHP Jordan Zimmermann tries for his first win.

The Caps and the TinCaps were postponed last night due to the inclement weather. They try again tonight @ 5:05 p.m. in South Bend.

Today, nothing is on tap and that's fine with me. I have music to play, drawing to practice, and the newspaper and a book to read. Ciao.

Thursday, April 18, 2019

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 2:00 a.m. in "The City." There should be just about enough energy in yours truly to make this abbreviated bog a full story.

First, let me say that the current temperature is 61°, but that it feels like 58°, Today's high will drop down to only 50°. That's a full five degrees cooler than yesterday's forecast high, and quite a drop from the current 61°! In addition, there is a Marine Weather Statement in effect now along the shores of the "Big Lake" from Holland to Manistee. Wind gusts may reach 30 knots accompanied by T-storms and high waves. Mariners are urged to seek safe harbor. There is also a Small Craft Advisory still in effect until 11:00 a.m. this morning. Small boats and inexperienced sailors are cautioned to avoid being on the lake. However, the sun will still rise this morning @ 6:58 a.m. ans set later @ 8:30 p.m. We'll stay in the 50s for several more days too, as showers visit us today with a 70% chance.

We had a great day yesterday. We didn't accomplish much, well at least I didn't, but we did have a terrific lunch that consisted of a new recipe that Mary crafted using Tempeh bacon, which she has daubed Takon. When combined with lettuce and tomato on French bread, a delicious sandwich was made. When Mary added a side-salad, lunch was a keeper.

We did make it to the chiropractors, but not to that lecture I mentioned. Oh well, that's how it goes.

Dinner was a combination of various leftovers that Mary had in the refrigerator and since they were reprises of previous meals, they were all good.

Baseball news yesterday was mostly bad. The lone bright spot was the pitching of LHP Cole Hamels for the now 8 - 9, 4th place in the NL Central Cubs. He tossed a gem against the 4 - 15. last place in the NL East Marlins. Cubs' 3rd baseman, Kris Bryant, is still struggling at the plate, but he feels he is almost there. Here's hoping. The Cubs are off today before opening a weekend series @ 2:20 p.m. Friday @ Wrigley Field against the 9 - 9 in the NL West AZ D'Backs as RHP Kyle Hendricks tries for his first win.

Every other team in my baseball world was awful. My beloved, 6 - 13, 5th place in the AL East Red Sox, lost to the 8 - 9, 2nd place in the AL East Yankees, 3 - 5, as the Sox' bullpen couldn't hold the lead for Nathan Eovaldi. The Sox are off today too, before traveling to Tampa Bay to meet the 14 - 4, 1st place in the AL East Rays @ 7:10 p.m. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez will try to right the ship.

The 8 - 9, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers, fell to the 10 - 6, 3rd place in the NL Central Pirates, 2 - 3. The Tigers will be visited today @ 1:10 p.m. by that other team from Chicago with their 7 - 10 record in the AL Central, as RHP Tyler Ross takes the hill for the Tigers.

The Caps, well they are an "A" level team, but so are the other teams in the MWL East, so their loss to the Lansing Lugnuts, 2 - 8, dropped them into a last place tie with Mary's sentimental favorites, the Dayton Dragons. The Caps travel to Ft. Wayne, IN to meet the TinCaps @ 7:05 p.m. tonight.

We did have two train runs yesterday. In the morning, only locomotive #2025 was seen soloing heading south @ 8:52 a.m. Later, Ginger and I spotted the same locomotive heading north towing four CHCs, one DBTC, and one GTC.

Our daffodils are finally blooming. We love how they give a sense of spring to the vast gardens of the PE.

Quite a change from Sunday into Monday.
When our back-forty looked like this.
Today, we have nothing on tap. The indoor chores are done. We have only to read more, play with the girls more, and try to make a larger dent in the refrigerated leftovers. Ciao.

Wednesday, April 17, 2019

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the naion and across the world. It is just past 5:00 a.m. in "The City."

So far, what a morning,. I went downstairs around 3:00 a.m. to empty the dishwasher and I didn't finish in the kitchen until nearly 4:00 a.m. That's because Mary's adventures in the kitchen required some additional cleanup that I hadn't anticipated. While her lunch and dinner offerings yesterday were excellent, more on those in a minute, the associated dishes themselves required significant attention. Oh well, she cooks and I clean up, a fair trade I think.

At any rate, she prepared a lunch of what the author of the recipe called Southern macaroni and cheese. The only thing southern was probably the collard greens, but that's okay, because the end result was delicious and a definite keeper.

Mary combined the collard greens, some freshly minced garlic, one of my vegan sausages, some Daiya™ cheese sauce and some whole wheat shells to end up here. All of this done while I was at my P/T appointment, which went very well.

First, came the washing and then chopping of the collards.

The vegan sausage was sliced and then sauteed in the cast iron skillet

Then combined with the other ingredients for further cooking.

Until voila, the finished dish.

Dinner too was excellent, a variation on one of Mary's tried and true recipes for homemade barbecue sauce over Hasselback Tofu accompanied by mushrooms marinated in a sauce that is secret to me, but which I liked.

The in-between steps were not important, the end result is what counted.

Now if I could just remember how to place pictures in the appropriate folder the way Mary showed me, I 'd be all set.

But I digress once again. During the morning and early afternoon hours, Doug, of Doug's Landscaping, came by to finish our spring cleanup and spread the new mulch. He did an excellent job of edging and spreading and spared by old yak and my freshly repaired shoulder, so I'm all good with that. No pictures though.

We have a current temperature of 44° that seems to be the low for this morning. Unfortunately, the chance for T-storms this morning is 70% as we reach today's high of 57°. Thursday's high is forecast by the NWS to reach 54°, but with the chance for T-storms increased to 90%. Not surprisingly, there is another Small Craft Advisory in that forecast that runs from 2:00 a.m. Thursday until 11:00 a.m. that same day. Good news, it looks like the opportunity to get our seedlings outside in their greenhouse home is almost here.

Baseball news yesterday was mixed. The now 7 - 9 in the NL Central Cubs rode the great pitching of LHP Jose Quintana through more than seven innings to win one over the 4 - 14 in the NL East Miami Marlins, 4 - 0. The Cubs should beat the Marlins, but this year, you just never know. Another bright spot is that the $126 million man, RHP Yu Darvish, has re-added his two-seam fastball to his mix of pitches to keep hitters guessing, It was one of those clocked @ over 97 mph on Monday night, that hit the Marlins' batter, Cubs' catcher, Willson Contreras and the home-plate umpire. Oh well, I'll take it if he can win baseball games. The Cubs and the Marlins square off once again tonight @ 7:10 p.m. EDT.

My beloved, 6 - 12, 5th/last place in the in the AL East, sent their ace, LHP Chris Sale to the mound against the  7 - 9, 2nd place in the AL East Yankees, and got another loss tacked on to their worst in the AL East record, this time 0 - 8. Sale opined that he was "Flat out embarrassed." Ya think? A man who just got a five-year contract extension that will pay him $15 million this year and then jump to $ 29 million ofr the next four seasons, shold be embarrassed.

Oh well the Sox and the Yankees go at it again tonight @ 6:35 p.m. when RHP Nathan Eovaldi gets the ball from Sox manager, Alex Cora. How do you go from fisrt to worst in just a few months? I dunno, you'd have to ask 2nd year manager Cora.

The now 8 - 8, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers, are starting to look like they will live up to, or is it down to expectations, as they lost one to the 9 - 6, 2nd place in the NL Central Pirates, 3 - 5. The Tigers tried, but they just don't have the horses this year. Tonight @ 6:40 p.m. the Tigers send RHP Spencer Turnbull to the mound to try to win one.

The 5 - 7, 7th place in the MWL East Caps, lost again to the 6 - 6, tied for 3rd place in the MWL East Lansing Lugnuts, 3 - 5. The Caps and the Lugnuts go again today @ 12:00 p.m., weather permitting.

We ran some errands yesterday and culminated our day in Spring Lake @ Stan's. Mary walked across the street to the Spring Lake Florist and availed herself of a sale on tulips for the living room. Our daffodils are not yet fully in bloom and the tulips are still a couple of weeks away, so she needed a splash of color that only fresh-cut flowers can provide.

Perfect!
Otherwise, not much is happening around here. Since I am up, I am finishing some laundry that was generated by several days of kitchen adventures and then we have no specific plans until this afternoon at the chiropractors and possibly a lecture @ the Tri-Cities Historical Museum entitled, "Retro Road Trip 1959" presented by M. Christine Byron and Tom Wilson. tonight @ 6:30 p.m. Ciao.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 3:30 a.m. in "The City."

Well my loyal readers, I was outside with the fur-children on a cool, dark morning @ about 2:00 a.m., and in spite of the date, spring is not yet here and winter refuses to let go. We have a current temperature of 40° that will drop to an overnight low of 39°. Oddly, the NWS has revised their forecast to include temperatures downward, as today's high will only reach 50° with light rain in the forecast @ 90%. Wednesday, the high temperature improves to 58°, but the NWS has added T-storms with a 100% certainty. Snow one day, rain the next, but spring-like temperatures are still elusive, as the highs are in the 40s for a couple of days and then maybe, just maybe, we'll get to the 50s and 60s consistently.

At any rate, as you have probably noticed, I like to take pictures of my surroundings and yesterday morning was no different. I was downstairs yesterday morning waiting on the fur-children to finish their business, and I noticed that our back-forty was still snow-covered as was the motor scooter of our neighbor. Much like empty playgrounds, there is something about a motor scooter that cannot be used that is photographically appealing to me. So, I took some pix of that forlorn sight.

Since I had the camera in my hands, I took some pix of our deck, the back-forty, and our parkway garden too.

I put the snow shovels away and had to retrieve one from the garage to move this heavy-wet snow.

Somewhere out there are our daffodils, our tulips, and our spring.

The city cleared the street, but the snow was now in our parkway garden.
Oh, the sidewalk Zamboni came by too, and made a contribution to our front sidewalk.
Moving right along, as did the snow by early afternoon, we finally made it out for our errands, We traveled to the vacuum store, the paint store, the grocery store and the art/crafts store. We actually came away with something that I we hadn't set out to get, a cordless vacuum when the plan was to get bags for the corded model we had, but which has since been retired.

But I digress. We had a list for all the other things we desired and didn't deviate from that. Thus, we saved some money. 😊

Before we left, I watched some of the game between my beloved, now 6 - 10, 5th place in the AL East Red Sox and the 7 - 10, 2nd place in the AL East Orioles. The Sox fell to the Orioles, 1 - 8. Sigh. Fortunately, there is always another day and the Sox will rise again as they play the 6 - 9, 3rd place in the AL East Yankees, @ 6:35 p.m. when LHP Chris Sale takes the mound.

The idle, and now 8 - 7, 3rd place in the AL Central Tigers, welcome the 8- 6, 2nd place in the NL Central Pirates to Comerica Park @ 6:40 p.m. tonight, when LHP Matthew Boyd goes for the win.

The 6 - 9, 4th place in the NL Central Cubs had a great game yesterday as they defeated the 4 - 13 in the NL East Marlins, 7 - 2. Yu Darvish had a good game, getting his first win with 5 2/3 innings pitched, as his fastball hit 99 mph! However, that fastball also hit the Marlins' batter, Lewis Brinson, ricocheted off him, then off of Cubs' catcher Willson Contreras, and finally hit home-plate umpire, Brian O'Nora. Darvish walked four batters and when asked how he did that yesterday, but walked no one his last time out, he reportedly quipped, "I'm Yu Darvish." The Cubs and the Marlins go again tonight @ 6:10 p.m. when LHP Jose Quintana gets the ball.

The 5 - 6 in the MWL East Caps took 10 innings to fall to the Lansing Lugnuts, 2 - 6 to fall into a 5th place tie with the Great Lakes Loons and the Lansing Lugnuts. The Caps and the Lugnuts try again tonight @ 6:35 p.m.

Otherwise not much is happening. I have my now now weekly P/T appointment this afternoon and that's about it. Mary has kitchen plans and I have additional plans to play a little, draw a little, read a little and retire a lot, to paraphrase Robert Fulghum. Ciao.
