Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be. It is just past 12:30 a.m. in "The City."

Well, yesterday was exciting. I got on my bicycle and rode down to Chinook Pier to watch the arrival of one of the cargo ships that visits GH regularly. I took some great pictures after Mary retrieved the camera with the telephoto lens from my office. Everything was going well and then, when I was almost home, I stopped for X-traffic and fell off of my bicycle. If you have to ask, you don't know me very well. Let's just say that I came home and told Mary that like a long ago friend of Adams, Ace, I needed to be fixed. I am scraped-up on my knee and my elbow which now sports a large bandage, but I'm otherwise OK.

So, I was speaking of those pictures, which you can enlarge by clicking on them, so I'll include them now.

The bow and wheelhouse of the Wilfred B. Sykes

The stern of the Sykes

The mid-section of the Sykes as she entered the channel leading to the GH Board of Light and Power.
The BLP J.B Sims power plant, a possible destination for a delivery of coal.

It took some time, but the stern soon moved into the channel.
However, it is more likely that the Sykes was delivering slag or crushed stone to Verplank's Dock in Ferrysburg.

The Sykes is named for a former chairman of Inland Steel, the company that commissioned the Sykes in 1949 as the first ship built to play the Great Lakes carrying bulk cargo. She is a self-unloader that spans 672 feet in length. Her beam is 70 feet across. She is powered by twin steam turbines that produce 7,000 horsepower and she can carry of 21,500 tons of cargoes such as coal, slag, or stone.

Yesterday in baseball was good if you are a Cubs fan. The 35 - 24 Cubs, who are now .5 games in back of the losing Brewers in the NL Central, beat the Phillies 4 - 1. The Cubs welcome the Pirates to the Friendly Confines today @ 2:20 p.m. EDT.

If you are a Tigers fan, which I am, then you will be glad to know that the 30 -34 Tigers defeated my beloved Red Sox by a final score of 2 - 7. If you are a Red Sox fan, which I am, then you won't like that final score. The Sox fell into 2nd place by .5 games behind the Yankees in the AL East. The Red Sox meet that other team from Chicago tomorrow night @ 7:10 p.m. in Fenway Park. The Tigers are also home in their own Comerica Park, to face the Indians, the 1st place team in the AL Central tomorrow night, also @ 7:10 p.m.

The Caps beat the Loons yesterday, 6 - 1 to move firmly into 3rd place in the MWL East. The Caps are home tomorrow night to play the South Bend, IN Cubs @ 7:05 p.m.

I started a new book last evening, entitled Well, That Escalated Quickly by Franchesca Ramsey. I am not a regular follower of postings on YouTube, but Ms. Ramsey is a regular contributor there as well as being a social justice advocate, a comedian, the host of the MTV web-series, Decoded and a regular guest on cable news shows. I am just into the second chapter, but this book is a good read

We have a current temperature of 63° under partly cloudy skies. Today, there may be rain in the evening and a high temperature of 78 humid degrees according to the NWS. The sun will rise @ 6:05 a.m. and set @ 9:22 p.m.

We have plans for today that include a doctor's visit, a stop at the Camera Store in Muskegon, a trip to the New Ewe in Newaygo, MI and a stop at one of the big-box home centers for some needed items for the PE. Ginger will be going to daycare after I walk STWD to The Bookman and water the lawns and gardens of the vast PE. Ciao.
