Good early morning GH. It is just past 4:30 a.m. in "The City." Our current temperature is 45°. The National Weather Service has pushed back their 60s forecast until Wednesday of this coming week. Those "warmer" temperatures will be accompanied by a 30% chance of isolated T-storms. Then by Friday, we fall back into the 50s with another chance of those T-storms returning, this time @ 40%. I am only slightly concerned that our vegetable harvest may be taking place indoors this year.
Saturday was the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby, with coverage that started at noon and continued until 7:00 p.m.. That's if you don't count the coverage that started on Friday's sports talk shows. As I noted in my previous blog, I just "happened" to pick the eventual winner, California Chrome. I got lucky, which hasn't happened too many times in the past. I believe that Steph did that two years ago when she "picked" the long shot winner I'll Have Another. Usually my horses are still running in the next derby, having never left the track. Maybe this year I have picked the Triple Crown winner.
Elsewhere on Saturday, we did get to those aforementioned Tri-cities area garage sales. We didn't get anything. Too many things for babies and toddlers that aren't in our world. We did stop in at the grocery store in the area for a few things and I was able to drop off those eyeglasses that we've been transporting in the car for weeks. That should increase our fuel economy by several miles per gallon. We needed a few things for our annual Derby Feast, home made nachos. This year we called our feast "Cinco De Derby", in recognition of the derby coming on top of the Cinco De Mayo holiday in Mexico. Our libations in lieu of Mint Juleps, were Bud Light and Summer Shandy. Cinco De Mayo is the day that celebrates the Mexican Army/Militia's defeat of the French Army at Puebla on the way to true Mexican independence. It has become a day to party, especially here in the U.S. The dates of the war roughly correspond to our own Civil War.
Otherwise, Mary worked some, I played some and then it was time to watch the derby. I believe that the race has been dubbed the fastest two minutes in sports, or something like that. After the derby, Steph sent an email to "congratulate" me on my "pick." I responded that sometimes, "Skill does overcome luck." : - ; I forgot to mention that we got some of those invasives pulled in the flower gardens here on the Palatial Estate. Then we picked up some mulch from the local big box home center. The experience at that particular store is always a pleasant one, even for Mary, who never likes those visits. It must be the people. Today I get to spread that mulch as Mary works on her current project.
Other than walking in the morning with Sugar the Weather Dog, that mostly sums up our day. Sugar did get in a little trouble at dinnertime yesterday, when she barked at me before I served her dinner. That made me forestall her dinner service until she calmed down. The dog training lady on the radio says that dogs live in the moment, so they don't usually know why they are being chastised. In this case, the moments of infraction and chastisement coincided, so Sugar knew. When the discipline comes from me, Sugar knows she has messed up. As Adam says, I spoil Sugar like the "Baby" I think she is.
This afternoon, we hope to get to a local church that is offering a "free" concert from an Irish band that is based in Detroit. I plan to go if it isn't raining. That's also Mary's post work plan. I have to be sure to avoid libations today, as I overdid it the last few days.
In sports, the boys in blue defeated the Cardinals 3 - 0 for their second straight win over the Cardinals. Tonight they go for the sweep, something that the boys haven't done in four years. Plus they get a chance to be just five games under .500 for the season. I hope the fair weather fans don't bring out the brooms to prove they are "hip." The Tigers thoroughly thumped the Royals 9 - 2. The Tigers are clearly on a roll. My beloved Red Sox got past Oakland once again, and now they are just one game below .500. The Caps dropped a squeaker to the Lansing Lugnuts 1 -2. However, they are still three games over .500.
That's enough for this morning. Sunrise will be at 6:35 a.m. and sunset at 8:46 p.m. Ciao.
