Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 5:30 a.m. in "The City."

Yesterday was far from boring, but the Covid-19 pandemic has reduced the options for thinking people just a bit. That's okay by me, because I have found many new activities to go with older pursuits that I'd meant to explore, but for which I'd never found the time. That's a win-win to me, to use an overused phrase. At this point, if I were writing a bad story, I'd lead off with something like, "It was a dark and stormy night."

However for the Cubs, it was in fact, not stormy, but it was dark, at least score wise. The 31 - 22 Cubs, who are leading the Central division of the NL by 3.5 games over the 26 - 24 Cardinals, didn't just have slumber in the lumber, they had an entire forest die in their hands as they were overcome by the visiting 33 - 22 Twins. 0 - 4. RHP starting pitcher, Yu Darvish, 7 - 3 was not as sharp as he might have been, but even Cy Young needed some run support for a win. 

It seems as though, with the exception of RF Jason Heyward, the Cubs big-boppers aren't bopping, they are sleep-walking at the plate. If the Cubs are to progress in the post-season, that has to change and now! 

Cubs' manager, David Ross, pulled LF Kyle Schwarber from the game in the 4th inning to underscore how a player has to have his head in the game at all times, as Schwarber misplayed a ball in the left-field corner and turned a Twins' double into a triple. That misplay led to a run being scored by the Twins.

Tonight's game with the 15 - 38 Pirates in Pittsburgh is a good place/time to start the improvement, as LHP Jon Lester, 2 - 2 goes for the  Cubs @ 7:05 p.m. EDT.

My beloved 20 - 34 Red Sox got a great start from rookie RHP Tanner Houck, as he tossed a near-perfect game at the 31 - 22 Yankees for a 10 - 2 win. The Sox are off today, but they will play out the string @ Fenway starting tomorrow night @ 7:30 p.m., when yet another wannabe Major-League™ pitcher, RHP Nick Pavetta,  takes the mound.

The 22 - 30 Tigers sent LHP Matthew Boyd to the mound yesterday and for the first several innings, it looked like he had regained his pre-Tommy John form. But, the sky soon fell on Boyd and the Tigers lost to the 29 - 24 Indians. 4 - 7. The Tigers too are off until Tuesday night, when they visit the Twins for a 7:40 p.m. game when rookies RHP Tarik Skubal. 1 - 3, continues his journey into the big leagues. 

The 0 - 2 Lions were looking good until the 2 - 0 Packers and their star QB, Aaron Rodgers, put the pedal to the metal and cruised to a 42 - 21 victory. Nuff said. Will Head Coach, Matt Patricia's tenure be coming to an end after another dismal season? The Lions visit AZ to face the 2 - 0 Cardinals next week.

Da 2 - 0 Bears, tried to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yesterday, as the 0 - 2 Giants came to life and almost upended the Bears before the Bears' defense stiffened and held the Giants out of the end zone. Next week, Da Bears visit the Falcons in Atlanta for a 1:00 p.m. game. 

Saturday afternoon, I used her camera to take a pic of the last bloom of the season on Mary's Giant Hibiscus. I took one of the flower in full bloom and one of the pistil, close up.

After Da Bears game, we took the fur-children for a walkabout in the Lake Forest Cemetery. Once again, I didn't take my camera, so Mary took hers. One of first sights we saw were more wild turkeys grazing amongst the markers. They quickly moved along as we came towards them with the fur-children.

The wild turkeys knew to avoid our ferocious predators.

We moved in, they moved out. 

A quiet cemetery is a great place to take some shots of the trees and the sunlight that filters through them.

Yesterday's weather here in GH could not have been better. The high temperature reached 70° and today's high will once again get into the lower 70s. We should see that continue for several more days. Tonight's low will be 58º. As of now, the current temperature is 52º, but it feels like 50º with the 7 mph wind.

Today, all I have on tap is to go out for an appointment at the podiatrist. I finished Thursday's crossword puzzle earlier. I'll play more music, and read more too. I like not having any plans most of the time. Mary will continue to read, craft, and putter in the kitchen.

Good morning or good evening, wherever you may be, across the nation and across the world. It is just past 9:00 a.m. in "The City." Yes, my loyal readers, even though fall/Autumn officially begins on Tuesday, my desire to stay in a nice warm bed is increasing exponentially. That, or I am just being lazy, Or maybe, it was due to my acquiescence to my age. Or... 

I spent some time in the kitchen yesterday making some vegan Italian meatballs which Mary incorporated into our dinner, so perhaps that was the impetus. Maybe it was the walk in the cemetery with the fur-children that used up my energy reserves. Or maybe, it was that I had once again decided to listen to the Cub's game on the radio last night. One of life's little mysteries I guess. 

I should mention that while I didn't wear my regular summer uniform yesterday, I did wear my new Michigan Irish Festival t-shirt. This was supposed to be the weekend we attended the festival in Muskegon, but due to the mishandling of the pandemic by you know who, the festival was canceled this year. Instead, as the saying goes, "Our family went on vacation and all I got was this t-shirt."

If you examine the pic of this model closely, you can see that the "I" is dotted by the Covid symbol. 

As I noted, we took the fur-children to the Lake Forest Cemetery for a walk, I didn't want to take along my camera, so our Senior Staff Photographer took hers. A good thing too, because we were in a relatively unexplored area when we encountered a family of deer grazing. While grazing deer are not unusual in the cemetery, the fact that we were out of the car and walking with the fur-children before we noticed them was.

Our Senior Staff Photographer snapped happily away and she got some great pix of the deer and of the nearby flora.

Although the deer were not frightened away, they were aware of the presence of the fur-children.

Seemingly, two generations or genders were present, as I saw the beginning of antlers on two of the family.

The cemetery provides some great opportunities for shots with contrast.

It was time to head home and watch some TV and prepare dinner. The fur-children were torn between two options. They like to walk in the cemetery, albeit shorter distances for the Dowager Queen, and the chance for dinner, one of Gingers true passions. Dinner won out.

I fed the fur-children and as she cooked, Mary shared one of the fur-children's other favorite things, whole-wheat spaghetti noodles. The Dowager will eat either whole-wheat or chickpea spaghetti noodles, but Ginger, well you know how that goes. 

We sat down to watch some TV as Mary's secret recipe sauce simmered and teased the noses of our fur-children. I liked the end result, but Mary thought she could have done better. Each to his own.

As I said, I came up to the media-room and then to bed to listen to the baseball game. Sadly, only one of three outcomes was good.

The 31 - 21 Cubs had their five-game winning streak snapped with a 1 - 8 loss to the 32 - 22 Twins, who were elevated to post-season play with the win. Starting RHP Alec Mills, 5 - 4, gave up two early  home runs, but the Cubs had slumber in the lumber once again and couldn't mount any sort of comeback. The relief corps pitched terribly and the score became worse. 

Tonight's game against the Twins @ 7:08 p.m. EDT, features the stylings of starting RHP Yu Darvish, 7 - 2. The Cubs also lost one of their more solid relief pitchers, RHP Rowan Wick, to the IR with a strain of the oblique muscle. It is likely that he is gone from the post-season roster. 

My beloved, 19 - 34 Red Sox were never in the game, as they were pummeled once again by the 31 - 21 Yankees, 0 - 8. Today's game @ 1:07 p.m. EDT will see rookie RHP Tanner Houck, 1 - 0 continue his baptism of fire versus the Yankees.

The 22 - 29 Tigers took their game versus the 28 - 24 Indians, 5 - 2 last night. Many players stated that it was to honor the retirement of former Tigers' manager, Ron Gardenhire, who abruptly retired before last night's game, citing health concerns. He is just 62 years of age, but he is a cancer survivor who wants to put his health before baseball. Is that all there is to it? I dunno, but with the Covid-19 pandemic worries and his increased chances of illness, he was wise to go home. The Tigers will be under the guidance of bench-coach Lloyd McClendon to finish out the season, beginning with today's game @ 1:30 p.m., when LHP Matthew Boyd, 2 - 6 goes for the win.

Today, not much is planned and that's fine with me. I may watch some NFL football for as long as this season lasts. Or not. I will do more puzzle solving and more reading too. Mary will be crafting, reading, and cooking and I may go to the man-cave to drop off some furnace filters. 

The sun rose here @ 7:30 a.m. and it will set later @ 7:45 p.m. In between, we have a current temperature of 43º that feels like 41º due to the 4 mph winds. Today's high is forecast to reach 70º under sunny skies, before we dive down to 50º overnight. Ciao.

Yesterday was a sad day for the United States and the SCOTUS. Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg passed away at the age of 87. She was appointed to the SCOTUS by President Clinton and approved by the Senate in 1993. She was the one of the most influential jurists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. She will be missed.

I'd be remiss if I didn't wish my Jewish friends a happy Rosh Hashana, The holiday which celebrates the beginning of the Jewish New Year, began yesterday @ sundown and continues until Sunday night. Mazel tov my friends.

We didn't go out yesterday beyond the vast gardens of the Palatial Estate. The fur-children had to make do with looking out the windows and barking at the passing people and their pets. Perhaps today.

I decided to break my self-imposed no-activity rule yesterday, as I did some baking. I chose, with a bit of "guidance" from Mary, to bake some garlic break-apart rolls. Although they can be a bit labor-intensive, they turned out great.

Of course, we had to sample some after they had cooled a bit and we can attest that this batch is as good as any other. 

In baseball news, the 31 - 20 Cubs and RHP Kyle Hendricks, 6 - 4, held the 31 - 22 Twins to no runs, as the Cubs defeated the Twins, 1 - 0. Hendricks gave a pitching clinic as he struck out ten Twins' hitters for the win. RHP Jeremy Jeffress, 4 - 1, got the save in relief. The Cubs and the Twins square off again tonight @ 8:15 p.m. EDT, when RHP Alec Mills, 5 - 3, and fresh off his no-hitter, gets the start. Mills was named the NL Central Player of the Week, due to his recent outing.

My beloved 19 - 33 Red Sox, 19 - 33 Red sox had their game versus the 30 - 21 Yankees in hand when starting RHP Martin Perez left the game in the 6th with 7 Ks and the score @ 4 - 0. That lead didn't last as the relief corps let the Sox down and the game ended in a final score of 5 - 6. The Sox and the Yankees play again tonight @ 7:30 p.m. when RHP Chris Mazza, 1 - 1, takes the ball for the beloved.

The 21 - 29 Tigers are fading fast, as they lost 0 - 1 to the 28 - 23 Indians last night. Starting RHP Michael Fulmer looked good as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery. The 2021 season looks better for the Tigers with a mix of 2nd year and veteran pitchers and the emergence of other position players too. The Tigers and the Indians go again tonight @ 6:10 p.m. EDT when RHP Spencer Turnbull, 4 - 3, makes his next start.

Overall, yesterday was a great day. We finished the Mary Trump book after my baking session and I read more in my latest novel, Half Moon Bay, by Jonathan and Jesse Kellerman. I am liking this novel  a lot more than the book I gave up on. Mary was doing what she loves, knitting, stitching, and reading. 

We watched a couple of episodes of Dharma and Greg and an entire episode of Counterpart too. TV news was just too much to take with the passing of RBG. We are trying to watch our favorite evening game-shows, but the seemingly incessant political ads make that a chore. 

We have a current temperature of 41º that feels like 39º with winds of 4 mph. There is a Frost Advisory in effect for parts of West Michigan, but since we are close to the shores of Lake Michigan in GH, that is not yet one of our worries. Today's high temperature of 62º under sunny-skies will be with an RHI of 55% before tonight's low of 45º.

Today, I hope to get in more music time, more puzzle solving, more living, and more retirement. Mary's plans are to repeat her favorite activities and maybe we'll collaborate on a walk in the cemetery with the fur-children.

Mostly, I stayed true to my plans for yesterday. I did make a terrific vegan roast beest from a new recipe, that is definitely a keeper. Mary fashioned part of my efforts into our dinner, which included her secret recipe gravy atop the beest and some roasted potatoes. 

I didn't watch any baseball, mostly because the Cubs were off yesterday. They play tonight @ Wrigley Field, when the 31 - 21 Twins come to town for a game @ 8:15 p.m., as RHP Kyle Hendricks, 5 - 4, takes the mound. 

Sadly, the 21 - 28 Tigers were on the losing end of a game versus the 27 - 23 Indians, following their loss to the Cubs on Wednesday night. The Tigers sent rookie RHP Casey Mize, 0 - 2, to the mound to be pummeled by the Indians in a 3 - 10 loss. The Tigers and the Indians play again tonight when the Tigers send RHP Michael Fulmer, 0 - 2, to the mound for a 7:10 p.m. start.

My beloved, 19 - 32 Red Sox, defeated the 25 - 23 Marlins last night, 5 - 3. Sadly, the next opponent for the Sox is the dreaded 29 - 21 Yankees, who are surging towards the top of their division. The Sox will pit LHP Martin Perez against the Yankees for a game @ 7:30 p.m.

Mary made that aforementioned run to the Fast Lane™ grocery pick up as I worked in the kitchen. Actually, most of my work was clean-up after I had prepared the beest for one-hour of time in the oven. 

We followed up some time spent reading Mary Trump's book about her uncle, with a trip to the cemetery for some exercise for us and the fur-children along with some picture taking. We explored a new to us area that yielded some excellent photo-ops. I'll include some pix here.

Because I was curious, I learned that a group of wild turkeys is called a Rafter, not a flock. At any rate, while we didn't see any deer, the turkeys were very cooperative in the picture taking.

Like the deer, the turkeys have no predators within the cemetery nor the nearby Duncan Woods.

So, they wandered freely amongst the markers. 

Of course, since we were exploring a new area, many markers and sights were available for a photo-op.

We never expected to see a grotto for sitting and thinking in the cemetery.

2020 has been a strange year. That comes as no surprise to anyone who is alive and paying attention. I think that the change in the times for the train passage on the RSTL changed with the end of "The Season." With all of the other distractions this year, it is likely that we simply forgot. So, what has seemed like some odd times for the trains to pass by, may actually be the yearly norm. For example, late Wednesday and early Thursday morning, then late Thursday night, around 11:00 p.m., and early this morning @ 5:00 a.m. Mostly, I've been snug as a bug in bed when they pass by, so I may or may not have info to report on a regular basis. 

I did espy the northbound run of MMRR locomotives 2019 and 2025 @ 5:45 a.m. today when they passed by the manse towing two DBTCs, and 11 CHCs. 

The current temperature is 44º, but it feels like 40º due to the prevailing 8 mph wind. Today's high temperature is forecast to reach 63º and an RHI  of 47% with an overnight low of 41º. 

Today, I hope to stick more closely to my do as little as possible plans. More music, more puzzle solving, more Mary Trump. Sometimes, less is more.

Like last night, I went to bed to listen to the 30 - 20 Cubs' game versus the 26- 23 Indians. Also like last night, the Cubs won the game, this time in 10 innings, 3 - 2. SS Javier Baez drove a ball into left-field in the bottom of the 10th that pushed Ian Happ across the plate for the winning run.While the Cubs kept me on the edge of the bed, so to speak, this time, like last night, they came away with the win for another reliever, RHP Jason Adam, 2 - 1. Starting pitcher, LHP Jon Lester, 2 - 2, left the game early for reasons as yet unknown. Perhaps he was in a funk thinking that he had started his last game in Wrigley Field. He was quoted as saying, "Six yearrs went by so fast."

The Cubs welcome the 31 - 20 Twins to the "Friendly Confines" Friday night @ 8:15 p.m. EDT, when RHP Kyle Hendricks, 5 - 4, goes for the Cub's fifth win in a row.

My beloved 18 - 32 Red Sox fell to the 25 - 22 Marlins in Miami last night, losing the game, 4 - 8. The Red Sox get no rest, as they have a game today @ 1:10 p.m against the Marlins, when RHP Nathan Eovaldi, 2 - 2, tries for his next win in this disappointing season. 

The 21 - 27 Tigers lost to the 21- 29 Royals last night 4 - 8, in spite of rookie LHP Tarik Skubal's "dazzling" performance. He did strike out eight batters, but the Tigers were their own worst enemies. The Tigers host the 26 - 22 Indians, fresh off their own loss to the Cubs tonight @ 7:10 p.m. EDT, when rookie RHP and former #1 draft pick, RHP Casey Mize, 0 - 1, takes the mound.

I was ineffective at keeping my physical activity to a minimum yesterday.  After lunch, in spite of my plans, I decided to do a small amount of yard work along with more watering. That was after I started and left the indoor chores to Mary. 

When I came in, I was just going to do some spot-cleaning of the carpeting, but that morphed into washing the tile floors, spot cleaning the upstairs carpet and then cleaning a good portion of the living and dining room carpets. I finished with a cleaning of the area rug in the mud-room. By then, I should have been done, but we decided that the fur-children needed to go walkabout in the cemetery. 

I read something yesterday. The best camera you have is the one that you have with you. That being said, I took along my Olympus DSLR and took some pix at the cemetery while the fur-children enjoyed some new smells. I snapped some markers, some flora, and a lone crow atop one of the markers.

We came home finished a movie that had been rudely interrupted by the TV app we were viewing the day before, as we munched some jalapeno flavored potato chips. When it came time for dinner, Mary carefully prepared some leftovers. It was after dinner when I moved upstairs for the baseball game.

Today we will do as little as possible. Mary plans a trip to the Fast Lane™ grocery pick up service, but that is the extent of her plans. I hope to read more, work another crossword puzzle, and play some music. Ciao.

I went to bed last night to listen to the Cubs' game, and shortly thereafter I fell asleep, secure in the knowledge that the Cubs had the game in hand. Later, I turned off the radio feed, because according to the descriptions and accounts of Pat Hughes, all was well. That didn't last. As all too often happens, the Cubs tried to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

When I awoke later. I learned that the Cubs  who were tied and then ahead,had lost the lead in the top of the 9th, only to load the bases in the bottom of the inning. Two batters were hit by pitches in the bottom of the 9th to first tie the score and then the Cubs won the game in a walk-off when the second batter was hit.

Early in the game, SS Javier Baez hit a long home run and in a later inning, he was hit by a pitch. He stole second on a strikeout to Jason Heyward and then when the Indians catcher threw the ball into center field, Baez was waved home and eluded the tag at the plate. That's why I get excited by baseball. 

The 22 - 20 Cubs, once again welcome the 26 - 22 Indians to the "Friendly Confines" tonight to face LHP Jon Lester, 2 - 2 @ 8:15 p.m. EDT.

My beloved 18 - 31 Red Sox visit the Marlins in Miami again tonight  @ 6:40 p.m. EDT. The beloved send LHP Mike Kickham, 1 - 0, to the mound following the Sox' 2 - 0 win over the 24 - 22 Miami Marlins. Rookie RHP Tanner Houck, the Sox 10th rated "prospect" gave a surreal performance in his Major-League debut, winning the game, and going 1 - 0.

The 21 - 26 Tigers and hard-luck LHP Matthew Boyd, 2 - 6. defeated the 20- 22 Royals last night, 6 - 0. The Tigers and the Royals play again tonight @ 7:10 p.m. EDT, when rookie LHP Tarik Skubal 1 - 2, takes the mound.

There is still a Beach Hazard Statement in effect for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon and Ottawa counties from until 5:00 p.m. EDT today. High wave action, strong currents, and dangerous swimming conditions can be expected. Piers may be heavily swamped by waves.

There is also have a Small Craft Advisory in effect for that same time period from Holland to Manistee. Southwest winds gusting to 25 knots with waves from 3 to 5 feet are likely. We took a ride to the Grand Haven City Beach and the Grand Haven State Park so that I could take some pix. The surf was definitely up and in fact, there was a Gale Warning in effect when we were there 

Yesterday, following their doctor's visits, we left the fur-children at home and traveled to the Grand Haven City Beach and the Grand Haven State Park for a photo-op. I took a lot of pix, but I only have so much room, so here are some of my favorites. Perhaps that walk in the cemetery with the fur-children will happen today.

I made vegan Italian meatballs again yesterday. Both Ginger and STWD were on-hand for the consumption of the mushroom stem cuttings that always go hand in hand with my efforts. Later, Ginger was especially grateful to assist with the consumption of some wheat-based thin spaghetti that Mary made for dinner. As you may recall, Ginger will not touch the chickpea based variety, but Sugar will.

If having to go to the doctor today wasn't enough of an indignity, yesterday we tackled the grooming and bathing of Ginger. Ginger got both groomed by two amateur, but well-meaning groomers and then bathed by a caring, but not all that competent human. She survived both encounters of the grroming kind and then she and STWD were mollified by receiving and devouring dental treats afterwards. Sugar didn't mind that she got treats for simply being the Dowager Queen of the manse. 

I stopped reading a book I was slogging my way through last night. As I've said before, I am too old to waste time on books that are boring. I am going to select another book from my library stack today.  

In the past, I have included the efforts of my Coloring Mentor, Kerry Fitzgerald, the Assistant Head Librarian at our library and the coordinator of what were my late and lamented monthly Coffee and Coloring sessions at the Loutit District Library.

Today we have only the doctor's visit for the fur-children on our official agenda. We paid our real-estate taxes last Sunday which are due today. Otherwise, I may do some outdoor chores, or not. I will work a crossword puzzle. I hope to get to some music too. Mary will continue to read and do the driving. Perhaps a walk in the cemetery with the fur-children?
